      Just nope. I love the Darcy from 1995 dearly, but the chemistry is so bad between them. And the rest of the cast is just awful. But its pride and prejudice so its also very nice to watch.

    • @DarlingDesi
      @DarlingDesi  4 года назад +105

      I just adore the chemistry between Darcy and Elizabeth in the 2005 version. I’m also just someone who is super attracted to beautiful aesthetic, which is another reason I prefer the 2005 version. But I do still enjoy watching the 1995 one. It’s nice that there are multiple adaptations so that there can be one for everyone! :)

      I think personally I liked the way that characters are characterized better (or more accurately to the book) in the 1995 version, especially Lydia and Jane, and this version spends a lot more time on seeing the sister dynamic and building smaller storylines up, but I prefer the romance better in the 2005 movie (THAT HAND FLEX SCENE OMG) and I just feel like the movie has more rewatchability (?? not a real word) than the show does.

    I totally agree about Edward Ferrars, he wasn't a compelling love interest at all. I think Brandon was better suited to Elinor personally!
    I love Northanger Abbey too! Such a fun novel.
    Personally I really like Mansfield Park because I loved Fanny as a protagonist and I enjoyed seeing how she interacted with the other characters.
    My favourite novel of Austen's is Pride and Prejudice (shocker) and my least favourite is Persuasion.
    I adored this video so much!

    I think it is funny that Jane Austen said that she wanted to create a character that only she would like, and I think it makes sense with her time era. The reason why so many women love Emma in today’s world is that we all desire and can have freedom that Emma had. And Jane Austen probably saw herself a lot in Emma and a girl like Emma who doesn’t feel the need to get married is more like a lot of girls today than in the regency era.

    I love your intro! You showed one of my favorite aspects of the 2005 P&P film, the way they really give us a fairy-tale romance. Keira Knightley reading a book with her dress dragging in the grass is something straight out of Beauty and the Beast. However, I like the 1995 version best because it really captures the humor from the book.
    Btw, I hope this doesn't sound rude, but there were definitely a couple spoilers in here about Persuasion & Emma!

    I've only read two Jane Austen novels so far: Emma (my favourite) and Pride and Prejudice. I've read many classics before but Austen's writing is different from anything else I've read so I definitely used audiobooks, reading a bit then watching a bit of an adaptation, and summaries to help. I'd also recommend the chapter summaries by course hero on youtube if you want a one minute overview video of each individual chapter. they don't go into too much detail but are helpful if you just want to make sure you understood the gist of the chapter or need to refresh your memory!

    Oddly enough Mansfield Park is my favorite. It is a tour de force of 'realistic' epic novel writing that Dickens made famous. The main character Fanny Price is a bit lackluster but her character is principled and beautiful. Manners vs Character. That's the theme and Jane works it to perfection.
    My second least favorite is Pride and Prejudice - maybe because I'm a guy and it is the most "chick" story with all the buzz of who's going to marry whom.
    My absolute least favorite is Sense and Sensibility. A bit green, not Austen's fully developed style.
    I do appreciate your love of Emma. What a fine novel in every way! The language, the satire the comic drama - but also the depth of moral insight that Knightley provides really ranks it high.

    • @divyak9980
      @divyak9980 4 года назад +1

      Hi, I do not mean to challenge your preferences in any way, however i just wanted to say something about Pride and Prejudice. The who's marrying who part of the story was more than just a girly trope. Mr. Collins was to inherit the house after Mr. Bennett dies, that is why Mrs. Bennet was so obsessed with marrying off her daughters. In a way it's a very telling view into the anxieties of the society the characters belonged to. A woman without any means to earn for her self, and with no right to property was completely dependent on the prospect of good marriage to sustain herself. I remember being really struck by it when I was younger.

I have to admit, I have never read a Jane Austen novel, myself but I think I will maybe grab a copy of Emma the next time I visit a book shop. From everything I've heard about this book, Emma just seems so badass. Great video! :)

    I did not like northanger abbey when I read it, but your enthusiasm for it is telling me that I need to try and read it again 😅 My favorites are Pride and predjudice and Emma, I re-read at least one of them once a year and have seen the different TV and Movie adaptions more times than i can count 😅

      To each their own! ☺️ Definitely okay time not love Northanger Abbey 😁 I just recently read Emma for a second time! I only got into Austen’s novels recently but I can definitely see myself rereading at least one or two every year. They’re just TOO GOOD to only read once 🙌🏻

    I appreciate your review, but Persuasion is my favorite JA novel (but that me be because I've only read P&P amd Persuasion). The 2007 adaptation is great. Maybe I will pick up the other books too.

    I absolutely loved this video ☺️ Northanger Abbey is probably my favourite, probably cos of Henry Tilney. I just find him utterly perfect. It's just words! He loves words and there are some words he just absolutely hates (well, one) and I find that hilarious. Plus his and Catherine's romance! The whole message of the book is so clever. Persuasion next cos of how down to earth it is. Plus the letter 🥰 Again, words! That letter is... Same reaction as you 🥰 Pride and Prejudice is lovely too. It's such a feel-good book and all the dynamics. It's honestly been such a long time since I read Sense and Sensibility, so 🤷🏻‍♀️ Nothing much to say there 😅 From other videos I've watched, everyone is really flawed, which I love! I couldn't get into Emma or Mansfield Park, but I have watched a webseries based on Emma called "Emma Approved" and I'm so glad I watched it cos, you know, Mr. Knightley 🥰 His sarcasm and directness. I'd love a friend like him. One to call me out when I'm wrong. But Mansfield Park 😕 From what I've watched, it's not a very happy one so I'm not gonna bother. Great idea about listening to audiobooks! I listened to Emma, which is much less effort 😅 That's the kind of reader I am 😄

    Your passion for Emma made me pause your video, track down and watch the 2020 Emma movie, and then returned to watch the rest of your video xD Lol, I absolutely loved the movie and now I need to give the book a go! I have read a few Austen’s books but for some reason Emma just never jumped out at me - honestly let’s just blame it on Pride & Prejudice holding my heart hostage xD

    I absolutely ADORE this video!! I now want to reread all of Austen’s work. If you ever read a her work from when she was younger (like Love and Freindship and Lady Susan) definitely let me know! I loved studying those in Uni. I just had to let you know - I took an Austen class in uni, and we read Emma in it and my prof made us all low key hate Knightley (as much as you can because he is the most real of all of them) simply because she was like “so, Knightley groomed Emma from the age of 13 to be his perfect wife” and all of us lost our minds 😂😂 It’s one of the parts of the novel I don’t like, the massive age gap (cause he’s like 30 something and she’s only 18), but you are 100000% right with how entertaining and funny Emma is. I loved it! I have to read Mansfield park, then I’ve read all of her work. I might have to do a rating video too when I do so!! ❤️❤️

      @seto749 3 года назад

      I could make a case for that, but no so easily as I could make the case for Mr Knightley's only turning to Emma as a consolation prize after he finds Miss Fairfax disappointingly more reserved than formerly.

    I really need to read the books. I’ve been a Jane Austen fan, period films in general, for many years. My favorite adaptations are the 4-episode BBC miniseries of Emma with Johnny Lee Miller. He’s my favorite Mr. Knightley! Also the angst that builds in the 2007 BBC adaptation of Persuasion with Sally Hawkins. The ending is worth the buildup. I enjoyed listening to your breakdown of each story.
    Have you watched the adaptation of North & South, featuring Richard Armitage? It’s a wonderful mini series!

I read Sense and Sensibility to get into charachter for a Jane Austen ball some years ago. that was totally fantastic, i got to play my favorite sister Marianne. totally fell for my mr Willoughby! Emma was great and Persuasion too. Ive just bought all her books in one, such a beautiful gorgeous book so now I can read MP and NA too. I personally like the films and series better. the tv series are just so good, both Pride and Prejudice, Emma and Sense and Sensibility. the tv series of SS is SO GOOD. yu have to see it :)

    Have you read Sanditon? It is a book Jane Austen never finished, apparently there is an adaptation serie on it. By the way Emma and Northanger Abbey are the best but I love Marianne Dashwood character :)
