Ben, you are truly a masterful craftsman and a wonderfully talented woodworker. I too would simply ask for more narration to your videos, taking the time to explain to us novices what exactly you are doing and thinking when approaching a workpiece. I would love to hear what you are looking for, how the wood or tools are responding to your work, everything that goes into a project. You are so gifted. Please just provide a bit more instruction to learn the craft.
I liked the music. It was happy and had the right vibe and pace. Your videos make me want to slow down and work on quality and precision in my works. I know it's four years later, and it appears you don't comment often- but I just wanted to say thank you for sharing this and all of your other content. Really amazing stuff and so fun to watch.
I just finished my 3rd work bench and I don't know if it the end alll, I biult one for myself and 2 for my daughters birthdays No fancy joinery but sturdy and functional , I combined cabinet / fùrnature with carpentry /structural (shear and point load ) and economy as my biuld set Great fun biulding all of them
Absolutely beautiful work! Would you be willing to make a video giving a tour of your work bench with more details on how its built and its features? I'm soon going to embark on building a new work bench and I'm collecting as many ideas as I can to design the work bench that best fits my work now with some features for future work. Thanks!
Wow this bench is awesome I don't think I'd want to use it just incase I damaged it in any way, wish you had shown the whole building process. Well done it's truly a work of art!
Those hand cut blind dovetails were a joy to watch being done and to see the finished product. Far better quality than than most of the "fine furniture" on sale these days. Almost to good to use as a workbench.
Stunning work, I like the personal touch of signing and dating rather than an anonymous branding iron. I can imagine your future generations, after you’ve departed this mortal coil, finding that tangible connection with you very powerful. There was obviously no "It’s only a workbench" mentality. All those dovetails done to perfection was an amazing thing to see, especially for a newbie like myself. I really like your balance between hand tools and power tools, to me it looks spot on.
I love it if you did a tutorial on how you did all the joinery , Love to see how you use the tools properly Thanks for the video , Cheers from British Columbia !
Judging by the work done in the background it's obvious you are a true craftsman with artistic vision. Here's my complaint, kinda. I'm planning a new work bench and the end product left me wanting. Gorgeous work, just wanted to see more of the bench and if it had any unique functionality I should consider. Thanks for a well done video regardless.
Beautiful bench, and a fantastic video! Thanks for sharing. As others have said, I'd like to see a video with a walk through of the features of the bench.
Thanks for the comment, Denis, Music can be a tough one to dial in for a broad demographic. Mostly, I choose the music to what inspires me during the editing process. This one, although receptive, brought a lot of energy, that I found motivating. To each there own.
@@briarfox637 How does a content creator know their music choice was terrible if viewers don't tell them? That is what the comment section is for.... comments. In particular, constructive comments. The comment at the top of this thread was respectful.
Astonishing work..a master at your craft.. think I would of switch tracks after a little bit.. I ended up skipping forward because it was getting on my nerves. Again, the workmanship is amazing.
Hell yeah, pins first. Is there another way? Either you cut pins first, or your wrong. Ha. I tried tails first for a few years, but never quite found the rhythm that I do with pins first. In School we laid a lot of joinery out with a pencil, as knife would leave you a knife line away from a perfect fit. But that is the best thing about woodworking, isn't it? Everyone has there own way of achieving the same end result. Thanks for watching, Will
It wasn't too bad. Comes with great instructions. Probably took an afternoon, not including the glue up time. But to be honest, it doesn't really matter how long it takes, this vise is fully worth the time. By far the best vise I have ever used. As far as tips go, the instructions are so good that I don't really have any info for you that isn't covered in the literature that comes with it. Maybe just make sure that you mill your face boards properly. Rough mill them a couple days ahead of time and let them acclimate before final milling them to thickness. Preferably, these need to be flat, and stay flat.
Beautiful work. My wife calls BS on last workbench you'll ever make. She reckons all woodworkers are continually making workbenches 😀 I think she's on to something.
Epic. Simply fantastic work. I, apparently by the comments - clearly in the minority, felt like the music somehow echoed the feel/mood of the build. If they didn't like it, there's always the volume control...
Love the drawer unit, one question, when your chiseling out the waste around 6:45 or so, you have no support under the waste, not seen this done before, I am guessing you are only going half way each side, who taught you this method? It leaves the whole end unsupported.
Would you mind sharing the dimensions? I am designing my bench now. I am currently thinking 24x84. Looks like you are in that ball park or a bit shorter. Any thoughts on if you might change yours?
Why can't you? Poplar is cheap. It certainly takes time, but for me it is more than worth it in the end. You can't beat the look and sustainability of a solid wood drawer bottom, tapered and fit snugly into its grooves. However, I have used plywood for many drawer bottom and it works just fine. Most of the times , for me, it comes down to the pace of the shop for that given project.. Thanks for watching, David.
It wouldn't work. I use a dowel in the deadman. All it does is support the work before I clamp it to the bench. In all honesty the deadman is something that if I were to rebuild this bench, I would leave out. I've probably used it only a few times, and it is annoying to have to slide over to open the drawers. Always seems to be in the way.
Sometimes you get lost of the end result along the way. I'll admit I felt that way during this build. For a utilitarian piece, this one sure seemed to linger. Thanks for the wonderful compliment, Thom
Please choose a nice piece of classic music to accompany your videos, for all our viewing pleasure. I just can't imagine you listening to that track on a continuous loop as you work. Awesome and beautiful craftsmanship.
I'm going to mirror the others comments on the choice of music. Too many woodworking channels on YT where the creator puts music "they" like instead of what they think "we" would like. What I've found, my own personal opinion of course, is that the best music to listen to while someone works wood, will always be acoustic guitar music.
I noticed you ripping material on the band saw. Do you have a table saw or do you use band saw + hand tools? I'm just getting started and trying to decide what route I should go. Hand tools and band saw is appealing, but the one thing I haven't been able to reconcile is ripping boards. I haven't used a band saw much so wondering if this is a good replacement or not.
I do have a table saw, (two actually, one with a permanent dado stack in it) and I rely on them heavily. The bandsaw / hand tool route works but can be really time consuming. If woodworking a purely a hobby that there is nothing wrong with spending a little extra time to do it in a way that you enjoy more. bandsaw does a lot of things in a fairly safe manner. A table saw will give you higher level of accuracy, as well as efficiency. I cut most of my joinery on the table saw as well as most of my ripping and crosscutting. Again a table saw, if set up properly, can be very accurate. It really depends on the kind of work you will be doing. I think a table has more value. You can always buy a jigsaw to handle your curved work. However there is something romantic about a shop that has just a bandsaw and a good set of hand tools. In the end, get them both. I'm sure you could find an old Delta 14" bandsaw and a Delta Unisaw for under $1000 total Sorry for the late response.
Excellent build! Silly music got old quick; could have dispensed with that, or selected a classical piece that would have been more befitting your fine craftsmanship!😉
What I hate and what i love. Great video, great work, and skill. I love the shop because it looks like work has been done here. I have no love for clean sterele shops , they don't impress me one bit. Oh the music has to go.

The constant battle between what people find pleasant to watch mixed with the perfect ratio of audible nirvana. I guess, from what I am hearing, I was half way there. Thanks for watching, Jay. I appreciate the vocality.
Ben Prowell thanks for your reply. I normally don't offer anything but encouragement in my comments. In this instance, the contrast between the incredible quality of your craftsmanship and the distraction of the music caused me to say something. I think you might be better off with no music at all. Perhaps some overdubbing describing what you're doing. Please forgive me if I have overstepped in any way. I look forward to you next video.
Instead of the CRAPPY noise you call "music", how about some commentary on what you're doing and why you're doing it that way. I couldn't finish watching...
Hey John, I'm guessing the reddish wood that you are referring to is the mahogany, which is what all of the drawer fronts are made out of. All in all, the bench base is made of Western Red Cedar, the top is made of Hard Maple, drawer fronts are Mahogany and the drawers sides are poplar. Hope that helps, and thank you for watching. For the record, I too like the music.

Astonishing work, beautiful images, but the computerized repetitive musak didn’t bring anything good to it. Shut the sound off after 30 seconds.
