  • We discuss the short history of the Honda CRX, a car that helped to define the future of FWD hot hatches. We drive and discuss what makes this car unique and yet sad. While there have been better Hondas, this car has the staying power along with the NSX, Integra Type R, and S2000. There are a few aside from the VW Rabbit, and Golf that generated so much excitement.
    The Honda CR-X (styled in some markets as Honda CRX), originally launched as the Honda Ballade Sports CR-X in Japan, is a front-wheel-drive sport compact car manufactured by Honda between 1983 and 1991. It was replaced by the Honda CR-X del Sol for the 1992 model year. Although there are many supposed definitions for the acronym CR-X, the most widely accepted is "Civic Renaissance Experimental".
    In the US, the CRX was marketed as an economy sport Kammback, with room for two passengers and small rear seats only for the Japanese models. The European-spec car received a ZC 130 PS (96 kW; 128 hp) engine and a 2+2 seating arrangement. Redesigned in 1988 and produced until 1991, the CRX was popular for its performance, nimble handling, and good fuel economy. Honda's 1992 CRX del Sol was marketed as a CR-X in some markets.
    The Honda CRX was a model based on the Civic. The Honda CRX was one of the most popular cars produced by Honda during its initial release into the North American market.
    The Honda CRX was released at a time when the 1973 oil crisis was still fresh on a lot of people’s minds. Although it was pretty obvious that Honda had come up with a winning formula for success when it designed the original Honda CRX, the company continued to push the boundaries in subsequent years to improve upon the Honda CRX.

    What an extraordinary car it was.
    I bought a 2nd gen 1988 CRX-HF new in May 1988. It was one of the best days of my life. I remember going to fetch it with my younger brother. I was so scared to pull it out of the parking lot. I paid $9,172 for it. What made the car unbelievable to drive was the double-wishbone suspension-with short wheelbase & lightness. My brother moved to Popular Bluff, Missouri for a short period. I drove down there in my car to see him, through the eastern Ozark mountains along twisting turning roads. The car just hugged and absorbed the twist and turns like nothing I've ever experienced since. It was the best car I have ever owned.
    After 8 years with it, I got a 1992 Miata. This car was even more intense to drive, but it supplied too much feedback, and after a while I got tired of the ride - and started dreaming of the isolation that one assumes occurs with a Buick. So that made the CRX even more remarkable - because it provided the tactile sense of the Miata without the fatiguing over-supply-of-feedback.
    On top of that, look at the design today. It still looks contemporary. That's 35 years ago! In 1988 a good looking 30 year old car would have been something like a 1955 Chevy - definitely dated.

      Your story brought a tear to my eye as it reminded me of the day I drove my new ‘90 Si off the lot, not yet really knowing how to drive a manual and I had the nerve to drive to SF! I paid 10,500 with 250 down. I still have her, she’s got rust on sunroof but that’s cosmetic. You have to drive a CRX to understand why these cars are so beloved. I think this car represents Soichiro Honda’s secret heart.

    This is an example of why I feel the auto industry is going backwards with hybrids. Some will say that with today's requirements for crash standards it wouldn't be possible to build a car like the CRX, yet the Miata weighs just 2,400 lbs

  • @Scottj2011
    @Scottj2011 2 года назад +10

    The CRX got an MPG that was very close to today’s hybrid cars. It was originally known as the Honda Civic CRX. It even looked like a smaller version of the Honda Civic of those two generations

    • @MrEliasdl

      The CRX's fuel economy with 40 year old technology proves that hybrids are hogwash. They were getting 50-60 mpg. I wish Honda would put full technology into fuel economy into today's combustion engines.

    I had grown up in domestic cars. I finally purchased by 1st used car in 1990. The first car that caught my attention in the showroom was a white Honda 1987 CRX. I sat in it- that’s all it took. That car was genius. I purchased another white CRX HF 1989 3 years later. Have not left Honda since. And I only drive manual.
    An Integra, 2 RSXs, and a CR-Z later, I was able to get one of the 1st 500 2023 A-Spec manual Acura Integras in the U.S. in May 2022. Love it. It’s the largest car I’ve driven- not thrilled about 4 doors, and missing the rear windshield wiper (silly, I know). Performance, control, and the pure joy of driving another masterpiece from Honda is more than enough!

    Loved my 87 Civic CRX Si. Great gas mileage and fun to drive. Started my love of Honda's. Miss the days when a small fun car was all you needed. Hate today's SUV thing, I laugh and think what is so great to drive a tall ugly station wagon! Guess everyone wants to be a 1950's housewife.

    • @ThisOldCarChannel
      @ThisOldCarChannel  2 года назад +1

      Well the station wagon can be subjective. You must be a young buck. lol A lot of us who grew up with the station wagon would like to have one that our parents had back in the day. For me, it was a 1968 Bel Air Wagon! Now, I do have a buddy of mine who is in his 30's who just bought a bad ass "barn find" 1991 CRX in blue. I honestly would not mind having one but finding one in good condition is almost impossible. Thanks for watching and your comment!

    My buddy had a 91 crx Si in the early 90s. We put that car through hell and it wouldn’t break,that’s what got me into Hondas and I haven’t had anything else since ‘95. Started with an 81 prelude,an 86 Prelude that I drove to 450 thousand kms, 92 Civic Si hatch,an 01 Prelude which I still have and it’s still like new. I daily drive my 14 Civic coupe 5 speed and will drive it until it dies. I talked to an older guy last week when I saw him driving his nice crx Si and I gave him my number if he ever wants to sell. He bought it brand new in 1989 for 14 grand Canadian,it still looks great,no rust or anything even at 415 thousand kms😊

    I had a Honda CRX in high school and college. When I first drove that car I knew it was something special. It was a very sad day when I had to get rid of that car. I now have a Honda Civic Type R and love it. I can see and appreciate the improvements Honda made in the 30+ years which is pretty amazing. With all that said, I think the closest we got to a Honda CRX spiritual successor is the Hyundai Veloster N. Too bad those cars are no longer being made.

    At 1:56 you said the CRX was a 2+2 with a small back seat, but they were all 2 seaters in the US. JDM may have had something else, but not here.
    I suspect the confusion was the cutaway illustration you used at 2:07 which I believe was from a chilton manual or the other one, was it hayns? That’s an 86/87 civic hatchback Dx or S with the carb on top of a 1.3 or 1.5. It’s just a regular civic hatch back and not a CRX. This one also looks to be right hand drive.
