Kendrick just dropped AGAIN!!!
99% of the time I agree that "___ ruined music" is an old head take. But to me this one is more like "the Christian dark ages put science back 300 years", it's actually kinda true. There's an evolution that any genre exists through, and the industry really pushed Drakes mainstream pop appeal "hip hop" hard, to the point where people are saying that Kendrick having deep lyrics and multiple flows and personas is a bad thing. That it's ass shaking club music or it's bad. It dumbed down the genre. There's change and then there's moving backwards
It's like how people said news papers, television, video games, cell phones, smart phones, and social media would ruin the children, and when they say the same about tik tok it's just more melodrama... But it's like yeah, all those other things are just different, but advanced our access to each other and information, to stories, to themes and lessons, and then tik tok is literally a designed large scale addiction that requires no comprehension or attention. It's different.

Yea, I don't disagree completely that it's an old head take, but Drake is def the epitome of a trend in hip-hop that's always existed. That recent Mos Def clip saying Drake is Pop music is not a new sentiment from an old head, he literally had a track on Black Star called Hater Playaz talking about this. The greats have always acknowledged this aspect of the culture, while standing on the shoulders of hip-hop giants, and this current beef is just variation of that.
Maybe it's just my perspective from outside of hip hop, but most people don't really like deep or complex music. Your point here is like if I was insisting that prog rock is better than any other rock - the vast majority of people are going to call me a lame nerd. Hip hop is no different.
@@nevadanate4957 They can call you whatever you want, does it make the point any less true? The point here is that HipHop has always been a diffrent animal, considering the genre was highly malleable by the culture. That being the lore of the streets be it racial or political. The issue today is that the music genres (including rock) have basically all melded together and can more easily fall under Pop. But these ideas have always been an the center of the culture, and why battles and ciphers were just a few aspects of the genre. That doesnt really exist elsewhere.

@@helderandrade4801 but Kendrick’s shots was all related to musical talent first. He said don’t cross that line with bringing family up and Drake crossed that line. Even J Cole was coming from a musical talent angle in his diss track and backed out when he saw it was about to go further than that. They always talked about their talent until Drake brought Whitney and the kids into it.
