I’m so greatful for this lesson. You REALLY explain this so well. I do need to play with my colors but now I KNOW where to start. Thank you very much😷🎨
You are an amazing teacher Dianne! Your way of explaining things is so clear and thorough that I've learned more in the last week of watching your videos than I have in the last year of watching other tutorials. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
Thank you. In all my art painting classes, no one taught color wheel and demonstration of how to use it. I thank you so much. Now I’ll practice and am seeing the light. 🤓
It ended up looking like a warm tropical forest and made me want to do this color studies again. I did the ones suggested by Richard Schmid a couple of years ago and they've helped me a lot, but I got so tired that they stopped being fun at the end. Now I think I'm in the mood again, specially because yours doesn't involve making endless squares, hahahaha. Thank you again Dianne, I love your videos. Still the best teacher I know.
Thanks, Carol. I sympathize with the fatigue that can set in when doing the Schmid studies. I, too, found them beneficial and I know he deeply believes in them, but I also know that there are other beneficial ways to study color.
Thank you! I had not understood this concept at all before. I am like a sponge learning from you. You make it so clear and then demonstrate it. Thank you.!!
Dianne, you are the Shelby Foote of art!!! I can't tell you how wonderful it is to receive art education with a smooth southern drawl while living in Vermont. You are an inspiration in such difficult times. Thank you.
Hello Dianne, I have watched your tutorials on the use of colour schemes and found them indeed very helpful. Following the same principles of analogous and complementary relationships, how would it be advisable to use, let's say more neutral colours? Specifically, I'm thinking of umber and Sienna, both raw and burnt. These appear to have a combined content of reds and yellows with other colours and I would like to use them as my predominant hue. Thank you so much.
Our earth colors -- mainly burnt umber, burnt sienna, raw umber, raw sienna and the ochres -- all are neutralized versions of warm hues. To be more specific, burnt umber is a red/orange hue, burnt sienna is also red-orange but more orange than red, raw umber tends to lean more towards yellow and so does raw sienna. Neutralized hues will always harmonize because they all visually contain their complement (which is why they are neutralized). They work wonderfully together as an analogous color scheme.
@@IntheStudioArtInstruction Thank you so much Dianne. I've also been watching your tutorials on the use and nature of earth tones. All this because I am going to do some paints which are mainly composed of these colours. As you say, "let's have some fun". Take good care of yourself. Bernardo
It’s not mixing just ANY red or any blue, they’re specific colours. In order to get the neutrals, pay attention to the colours she’s using. This is gold. Thank you so much!
I have another question Dianne. Here I wee the lower intensity colors bring out a much less amount of hight intensity colors. And it does work. But I saw many paintings that seem to have all high intensity colors (or mostly high) and the boldness is very pretty--say with a large impressionistic floral painting or scenes from Italy with the bright buildings and doorways. How can I achieve big pops of colors and still use low intensity colors with it? Thank you so much- I think you're amazing.
Marie, even a color of a slightly higher intensity will be enhanced by a lower intensity color surrounding it. It's the way our eyes receive color. The saturations of hue (intensity) can happen in increments--it's not just fully saturated vs neutralized. Mastering controlling the degree of those increments can enable boldness.
Tank you so much ! I made my art school in 1988! And seeing you with all your passion explaining so clear ...I speak french but I Anderstand you well !😊 my life is art since im à Child ! You inspired me alot ! Big hug from Canada !🌷🌻🌺
Oh thank you Diane! This is my activity for the evening. This is something new to me. I understand what a triad, complimentary etc was but really didn’t know what to do with it. Im looking forward to being engaged in experimenting for several hours.
Great video, and very informative. I look at nature to see what looks good, it is surprising the combinations in flowers, birds, leaves etc, it is everywhere. But artists must need all this theory because they all use colour wheels. Anyway great video, as I said. Thank you. 👍👍👍👍
Another educational winner by Dianne Mize, thank you! I'm not an abstract painter, nor do I work in acrylics. But I've learned a lot from the abstract acrylics guru David Kessler, who works according to strict color theory concepts like these and explains them in his videos too. So you might check out his videos & see if they would be a good supplement to this one. Cheers....
Your lessons are the best part of my day! I love the way you break down your knowledge. I always finish ready to get to apply the information you shared in my painting practice.
Music to my ears! My hope is that folks will actually practice these tips rather than just watch them. The only way we make a technique or principle our own is to practice it. Thank you, Laura.

Thank you so much for this video! I work with Watercolor but in researching/studying color I found this helpful video! Together your explanation and color wheel visualization have opened my understanding and I am extremely thankful!! I am also awestruck and touched with your talents : )
Thanks. I'm delighted you found this one helpful. Understanding the relationship of color is key to good painting, regardless of the medium you're working with.
This is extremely helpful! I was familiar with the 4 colour schemes, but hadn’t understood the key is to neutralize most of the colour. Thank you very much for taking the time to explain and demonstrate the colour study! It is indeed harmonious and filled with beautiful colour.
Hello Dianne. I am happy I find you. Thank you very much for a great lesson that finally helped me with my colours and palette. Could you explain the Triad pallet too? It would be a great help. Thanks in advance
A triad palette is a palette of three colors. Most commonly, a triad is selected from colors of equidistance on the color wheel, but there are many color combinations that work. For example - two warms and a cool, or two cools and a warm or a split complementary set. The combinations are many.
Thank you! This lesson was so valuable . I think it will really help to keep the the colours to a limited palette. In an see already how the hues blend beautifully and harmoniously when done this way,
You remind me of my sweet neighbor that used to live down the road from me. Love your calm way. You are brilliant and easily the best person on RUclips on explaining things. I truly have learned so much from your lessons. Happy Easter to you and your family.

Great demonstration, thank you! I do have a question in regard to lowering the intensity: Should I typically choose the complimentary color opposite on the color wheel to mix my "secret color" and lower my intensity? In this example the Blue-Violet was your complimentary to the Red-Orange. If I were working with Greens for example, would I seek to use complimentary Reds as my "secret color" to lower the intensity of my Greens?
Yes, exactly. Not only the direct complement, but its analogous colors will also neutralize. One note: The color you choose to neutral with should always be value corrected so that it is also in the same value range as the color being neutralized.
@@IntheStudioArtInstruction Great, thank you very much!! You also answered my follow up question, which was about adjusting the value range of the complimentary color. I noticed that you used a little white to adjust your Blue-Violet. Are there instances where you're adjusting the complimentary value to be darker, rather than lighter? If so, would I use a pinch of black or is there a better option in the event I need to darken the value of the complimentary color?

If you had to limit your palette to 8 colors, what would they be? I end up with 40 different colors and I'm sure I could do with less. Love your videos!
If you're referring to the palette per se, that happens during the process of paint-mixing. If you're referring to the study I did in Color Secrets, I was working with analogous colors within their various value and saturation ranges. That might have resulted in your seeing the piece as "exploded on the palette".

Merci beaucoup.
Yes. This approach can be used for any subject. The important thing is to keep the color harmonious by making your dominant color choices from either the warm or cool side of the color wheel. See my free video on using the color wheel at diannemizeacademy.com/courses/how-to-use-the-color-wheel/

Great demonstration, thank you! I do have a question in regard to lowering the intensity: Should I typically choose the complimentary color opposite on the color wheel to mix my "secret color" and lower my intensity? Yes, exactly. Not only the direct complement, but its analogous colors will also neutralize. One note: The color you choose to neutral with should always be value corrected so that it is also in the same value range as the color being neutralized.
