I feel very blessed to come across your videos I believe I don't need to go anywhere now by just watching you i am getting everything I was searching for in the right direction and i am getting clearity on things which remain unsolved puzzle for me all the time. Huge respect to you from the core of my heart for allowing us to learn from Teachers like you without charging. It was like my dream comes true. Getting good teachers like you is a blessing. We are blessed to have you. Thank you ☺️
Finally got this, thanks to your method of teaching, ie..Knowledge of your work + passion + patience + love for your students . Honourable! Thank you, you’ve helped me get back to my easel.
Hue, value, saturation...makes sense. I am glad it took you a while to fine the right color because it showed me that it is a process that you sometimes have to work with for a while to figure out. It does seem like a hard and long process but that's because I want instant gratification, when really the whole process was very fun. You also found several colors that matched the other part of that leaf. Thank you. I am going to do some practice with this leaf picture and see if I can find the exact hues and saturation on that leaf. Thank you again. You are a really good teacher.
So glad you are healthy and continuing strong through these difficult times. That lesson made perfect sense, and I can use it! Thank you with many blessings in return.
Hi Dianne, i had a month without computer and wifi and (wonderful actually) but i missed you and am happy to be catching up on quick tips! Great tutorial. Thank you!!
I'm so happy that I have found your channel and so grateful for your knowledge you share, and the way you describe so easy to understand. I am amateur and working with acrylics, not with the oils yet but I suppose that dont matter . Just want to add , I love your work your style and the colours in your paintings are absolutely amazing, love it! Hope you gonna keep doing what you doing and thank you again ! 🧡
I’ve just spent the whole day trying to mix a similar colour to that gold tan in the leaf. Feels like I’ve been wrestling a pig. The pig won and I’ve just realised that violet might hold the key. Tomorrow is another day. Thanks for the reminder of the basics 😊👍
yall wanna hear something funny!! when I first started watching these painting videos, I thought plain aire was a place!! I kept seeing on the video heading in plain air. I kept thinking to my self, I'm going to have to there.. must be a very scenic place!! lol!! yes! i have my moments!! lol.. at least i can laugh at myself!!
Hello! I listened to “Notan How and why” tonight while working on a different project. I have not had the honor of watching a tutorial of yours prior to tonight. You said two tips that came right when I was contemplating my next move and if really helped me. I gave you a like a subscribed. Looking forward to more of your tutorials. Thank you very much for them 💚
Hi Diane! Thank you for being my online art teacher with your quick tips and how-tos! 🤗🤗 I have quick tip question! How do you paint water and high waves? I am armored with the masters and their renditions of boiling seas and would love to try, I just don't know where to begin!
Hi Dinese. I have put your request on our schedule, but it will be at least November before it appears because we film these Tips several weeks in advance. Meanwhile, the master painters who rendered so effectively boiling seas actually experienced the seas prior to creating the painting. They did many studies where they studied the motion the saw and the values of colors. When they approached the painting, they had the experience to propel that feeling, but they focused on the values, colors, textures, shapes and movement of the brush.
There are many. It's important that the surface be archival and that it be sealed because the oil in the paint will penetrate an unsealed surface causing it to pull away from the pigment and degenerate as well as deteriorate the surface itself.
I am using Golden open acrylics in stay wet palette nowa days for daily quick painting after my day job.......they never dry if i spray once a week and close it..i just open and start painting......Now i prepared some 30-40 colours or hues.....and are ready to open the palette and paint.....like pastel sticks......so no waste of time......just open and use them....This colour mixing process what you had explained is so useful when you are outdoor ....when you cant carry all the colours. I put this open acrylics idea here ......for people who do daily quick painting......I apologise if this idea is opposite to this video....However, even for that multicolour palette i used the same process......
Thanks for sharing this. So many folks using traditional acrylics ask questions about the rapid drying. Since I am not an acrylic painter, I don't feel I have the experience to adequately answer those questions, so it's good to have your contribution here.
Is your board on your easel vertical or does it lean towards you? In the video it looks like it’s leaning but perhaps to block the direct lighting? Thanks
Thank you for information on palette. I would like to know the SOLUTION USED to keep the paints in the pochade box 'wet'. ?? I have problems keeping the paint workable and it is wasteful.
Hello Dianne and thank you for your invaluable lessons. I have a question about the use of test strips. Why not just use the back of the palette knife like you did towards the end? I realize you would lose the 'history' of getting to the color, but you would also not be "wasting" some of the paint you are mixing. Thoughts?
Good question, Claire. Yes, using the back of the palette knife works just as well, providing there is enough color on the knife. Both methods work. Having the history of the mixing process can be valuable when you're building awareness of what colors do to one another.
Dianne, I've painted in oils for years. I recently bought some Golden heavy body acrylics because I'd like to learn to use those too. My paintings are okay, but the faster drying time is annoying. My biggest issue is that the colors seem to dry darker than they are when the paint is wet. Also, sometimes even if I gray down a color by adding complements as I'd do in oils, it'll look nice and muted on my palette but when the paint dries it'll look more saturated and at times garish on my canvas. Can you do a quick tip video focusing on painting with acrylics?
Donna, my experience with acrylics ended when I finished my undergraduate studies in the late 1960's, so I don't feel qualified to create a Quick Tip about them. BUT I found two RUclips videos that might help: ruclips.net/video/6ylvXW3bUf8/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/yXke2fz8XHs/видео.html
Just as in anything, there is first the mastery of skill, just like in sports. Then there's the mastery in visual composing-- how the images are placed and how the visual elements are used to interpret them. Underneath all that is the mastery of drawing. Then there is how the artist is able to interpret and express rather than merely copy.
There is no formula. Metals are reflective, so will reflect colors around them. They are neutral in hue, sometimes warm and sometimes cool. Observation is your best approach.
There is no minimum. My personal working palette has 12 colors on it, but rarely do I use all of them in a single painting. The number I choose depends upon the colors I want to use to interpret the reference.
I think Dianne Mize should also be teaching art teachers how to teach
I did that back in the days when I was teaching college😊.
Oh my goodness… a lot of good artists but not necessarily good teachers or maybe they just don’t teach you all.
Complicated matter explained easily. Awesome teacher you are!
Thanks a lot!

We all won't instant gratification, Jayne, AND we can get it once we understand a sound technique for doing so.

Thank you, Rosa. I am doing my best to stay safe and well. I hope you are, too.

Ha,ha,ha. Good one Deena. The spelling "pleine aire" was what threw me,until I finally saw,and worked out,"Plain Air"! Thick as a brick sometimes!
Plein Air is the correct spelling!
So helpful. Thanks, Diane.

All your lessons are fabulous. Thank you so much! Besides canvas what are the different surfaces we can work on in oil painting?
There are many. It's important that the surface be archival and that it be sealed because the oil in the paint will penetrate an unsealed surface causing it to pull away from the pigment and degenerate as well as deteriorate the surface itself.
Thank you for the wonderful tutorial. You always make seems seem doable! I need practice.
Thanks, Marie.
So well explained Dianne. Thank you
My pleasure.
This is a great tip! How would you evaluate colors for watercolor, Dianne? Thanks so much!
Same way, just use strips of watercolor paper because the color won't register correctly on card stock.
Excellent teaching Master ¡¡¡thank you for giving us your knowledge, I was very fascinated!
You are very welcome
Thx Diane! Great tip!
You bet!
You are so helpfull, thank you Dianne

I have it slightly leaning towards me to avoid the glare from our lights.
Very helpful. Thank you.

Thank you. I always learn from your instructional videos.
Please explain how you keep your paint workable, wet.
Check out Quick Tip 115.

P.S. We artist can't allow the thought of "wasting paint" to enter into our process because such thoughts threaten to waste the painting :)

Yes, I have that temper tantrum when I can’t get the colour right!
😊
Would a yellow ochre been a good starting tube for the leaf?
I don't like to make assumptions like that because the hue can vary. The leaf does lean towards yellow ochre, but it has hue variations in it, too.
Hello Dianne! I have a question for you.. What makes a professional painting different from an amateur painting? Thank you very much! :) Tatiana.
Just as in anything, there is first the mastery of skill, just like in sports. Please tell me what color should I use for silverware or stainless containers.
There is no formula. Metals are reflective, so will reflect colors around them. They are neutral in hue, sometimes warm and sometimes cool. Observation is your best approach.
Thank you. I will experiment to see I can describe silverware.
Hello and thank you! What are the minimum pigments to work with your color mixing system?
There is no minimum. My personal working palette has 12 colors on it, but rarely do I use all of them in a single painting. The number I choose depends upon the colors I want to use to interpret the reference.
In the Studio Art Instruction thank you!
Wow! What a great tutorial . This will save some minor tantrums at my easel.
And keep your blood pressure lower 😊
@@IntheStudioArtInstruction You bet!
I will also have to practice patience. :)

Dianne, maybe you are not aware .......how much charity of art you are doing.......God bless you..
Thanks, Sujanith. I certainly have been told often enough :)
🙏🙏🙏🌹
Thanks.
please start...videos on watercolour also......big request from me! whatever you teach is......Gospel of truth in art for me
Sujanith, it there something specific you'd like to see expressed in watercolor?
@@IntheStudioArtInstruction Yes...I would love to do misty landscapes or rainy days
