They Were WRONG About the Thunder's Big Three...

  • The NBA Playoffs continued on Wednesday night with the Oklahoma City Thunder and New Orleans Pelicans facing off as well as the Boston Celtic and the Miami Heat. The Thunder have been looked as a team that many think will be "exposed" in these playoffs due to their lack of experience and a lack of belief by many in their big three of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Chet Holmgren, and Jalen Williams. However, through the first two games of the series, each of them have delivered and are showing exactly why the NBA should be terrified of both what they are now, but even more so of what they can become. Meanwhile, the Celtics did the unthinkable and again lost a game to the Heat, this time, with no Jimmy Butler out there. Let's talk about it.

Nobody is talking about them because there's not a lot to talk about. No surprises, no history unlike heat/celtics or lakers/nuggets, low chance of upset unlike like pacers/bucks, no veteran super stars like suns/wolves or mavs/clippers or knicks/76ers. Cavs/magic is getting no buzz either for the same reason.

While they are 'this good' for sure. I wouldn't really say the playoff games so far showed how good they are. The first game was one of the worst games I've seen them play all season, in part due to the incredible defense (on both sides) it was an extremely bad offensive game. Herb totally clamped up Shai for most of the game and he basically missed his threes. The rest of the team (except Aaron Wiggins) was equally as bad offensively.
This last game was certainly better, but the Pelicans spirit was basically broken somewhere in the 3rd quarter. All credit goes to OKC for keeping their composure while the refs were completely destroying the game with their whistle. Apparently play-off basketball is no longer a thing, nor is consistancy while blowing a whistle.
If you want to speak high of the Thunder, it was during the regular season, where they played many, many games, outclassing their opponents with effective two-way basketball.

To be honest, they were highly inconsistant on calling the OKC players as well, they just didn't get fazed by it too much and kept their composure. It also helped (what the broadcasting team mentioned on several occasions) that the OKC players 'sold' them being fouled way more, while the Pelican players just try to play through the fouls.
If anything, the Pelican's greatest weakness is not missing Zion (even though that would have helped immensely), but it's their inability to deal with completely lobsided referees.
They were all over the place calling stuff differently and somewhere during the 3rd quarter, this broke the Pels spirit and they stopped trying to win and went through the motions.

As a Pels fan I get how you feel about the media's coverage of OKC atm as I was also shocked when noone seemed to cover the 1st game and it took a while for reactikns to come out compared to the rest of the series in the West. But I just don't think a lot of people are interested in watching OKC whoop on a Zionless Pelicans team with a struggling Brandon Ingram who just came back from his injury. They'll prob get more coverage in round 2 when yall face the Mavs/Clippers as whichever team comes out of that crazy series is going to have serious media attention

Way too chippy? The Pelicans are trying to match the physicality of the Thunder and they are getting destroyed by the refs for it. This discrepency completely broke their spirit and they lost game 2 way before it was it was even over. I'm not saying the Pelicans would have won game 2 otherwise (though they might have had a chance), but it was a fact that the referees ruined the game with their calls. They were very inconsistant vs OKC players as well, it was a shitshow.
Let them at least play, so it feels like a playoff game, or call it tight so it plays out like a regular season game. Either option would have been fine, but this was just inconsistancy over 9000.

While I can imagine you are excited for the win of the OKC Thunder over the Pelicans, seeing this from the Pelicans perspective made what you say not just a little overboard, it was borderline disrespectful. Saying stuff like: 'They do not have the talent level to compete with the Thunder' is a bit delusional.
The Pelicans nearly beat OKC in the first game on their home court. They did this, without their most reliable scorer that completely warps defenses, with a very bad referee job and (a basically playing at 50%) Ingram just coming back from injury, being hounded by a fully healthy Lu Dort that was allowed to do basically everything on defense, while Ingram could do nothing in return.
No pelican player played well offensively and I don't know what game you watched, but Shai basically had much more trouble scoring than you make it seem like in the video. He got the benefit of the whistle many times, also the lack of a whistle while pushing off players, creating space, which Brandon Ingram got called for at the opposite end. Stuff that is a normal basketball play and refs have no business calling and certainly not in an NBA playoff game.
I really want to be excited for the OKC Thunder and how cool it is that they made it to the top of the standings, trying to go really far in the playoffs. So far though, instead of being exciting games, it has been a frustrating affair. Instead of two teams battling it out with beautiful basketball going back and forth, it is a bloodbath of whistles. At least the defense in game 1 was good and it was very close. Hopefully we get a few really good games now and we can get a really exciting series moving forward.

They don't have to pay Josh Giddey. I mean, I like his passing game and he might turn into something really good, but having Aaron Wiggins, Cayson Wallace and Isaiah Joe available as potential starts should be more than enough. All of them have performed better and more reliably, providing really great defense, solid 3 point shooting, or solid defense and really great 3 point shooting in case of Isaiah Joe.
They might not be the passer and playmaker Josh is, but having any reasonable veteran pointguard as a cheap replacement could be enough to have that extra punch from the bench. The thunder have more than enough draft capital to trade for someone that fits with their team if needed.
Besides, it is not like SGA, J-Dub and Chet are bad passers or playmakers. The team has a lot of 'playmaking by commitee' being just a bunch of good players making smart choices. Even the 3 guys I mentioned from the bench are good enough in this role.
