As well as that mate if they'd bothered watching this video properly instead of just having a go at you they'd clearly of seen you removing the new bolts from their packaging it was clear as day to see. None of the criticisms I've seen on this video are justified you've done a grand job of this car just a shame a few sour keyboard warriors are seeing fit to try and bring you down. Keep your head held high James you're quality all the best a Loyal appreciative subscriber not going anywhere 👌
You are doin great pal. When I started you could jump in the engine compartment beside the engine ( Ford Angela 105e) and yet I still did not get as much done as you. You are teachin not just yourself but many many others. Fed up watching folks with 2 post lifts, Air tools and covered premises, you are the real deal. Keep up the good work, MDL
Did you ever think you would get to do these sorts of things many years ago, and do a outstanding service to the internet teaching people to be not scared to have ago, but the biggest bonus is having a smile all the time and seeing you are enjoying it.
Also endless opportunities for bigger and better builds as life goes on,if you have the knowledge and skills to do something like this you should prosper 👍
It's amazing how complicated this stuff looks at first glance. Then you see it all torn apart and it looks pretty straight forward! Thanks for sharing this, its truly inspiring! 🙌
So glad I came across your channel! You deserve all the credits of the world for the way you present the work to be done and do the actual work. I have myself a 2003 Cooper S with 193 k KM which needs I'm afraid BIG work: cylinder 1 with NO compression, knocking sound when I start the engine, yet all valves 'look' ok when I removed the valve cover. Further investigation is needed. Thank you for the guidance you already provided me with your videos!
Top work man respect 👍🏻 it’s hard to believe your not a fully qualified mechanic just god the show all we need is hands on experience an a little help for THE SAVAGE GARAGE 🏆👍🏻
Great vids, I used them to do my own mini and they helped tremendously! Couldn't have done it without them. Keep up the great work. Great respect from all the way across the pond in Texas!
Hopefully when you mullered the top of the spark plug tunnels they won't knacker the new seals when cam cover is installed, check the plug tunnels for oil after a run. Otherwise top job. Good videos, keep up the good work James. We all learn or are reminded as we go, great value for all of us.
There was clearance between the tubes and the seals as is normal for this engine. The top of the plug lead is what makes the seal. in other words. It'll be fine.
Excellent work again there. May I recommend that you turn the crank by 2 full turns (the crank shall turn 1 full turn) to check that the timing marks all align and that there's no valve to piston contact. The mark on the timing chain will move of course but this test will reduce this risk. Keep up the good work, very enjoyable to watch.
I personally think the next build should be a Kit Car, using what you have learnt and build something from scratch, like a 7 or Robin hood with a big lump in, top work lad!!
Excellent work great video ! Just a quick tip when I worked at a garage we used to clean engine parts like this valve cover gasket with petrol just stick a brush into a little bit of petrol and it got everything very clean
When you do the torque wrench 🔧 you gotta stop literally as it clicks. By going that little extra bit after the click you could be adding on say 10% more..... Eg 44nm instead of 40, or 110nm instead of 100nm It probably won't matter but better safe.
@Kris Nicholson exactly. The click part is the spring giving way. However the head is still attached to the arm. Therefore you can still generate a force where your hand is and over that length, a torque. Also going over the same bolt after the click isn't right. But it is minor. The whole thing can be ignored if your tool hasn't been calibrated in a while. Most companies do it yearly. All depends how you store the wrench.
@Kris Nicholson he went further that the 'play' that is literally the few degrees as it clicks. Watch again. And once it's clicked that's the 'play' of the click action gone....further turning = more torque.
Cracking video James, Your attention to detail in what you do and drive to do it well is just brilliant you're a definite inspiration that's for sure. Hope the Mini serves you well as the Focus replacement all the best mate you're doing great!
Really loving this series on the Mini which has me watching the other videos that you are publishing. Quite simply awesome - well done, it’s addictive watching now 😊
Are you going to crank the engine over a couple of times by hand after this I would do it on the starter with the plugs out . I would use cheap oil and change it say after 100 miles then refill with good stuff . Does the cooling system need flushing out as well , good job well done.
Great video, the little tips like cleaning out the holes where the head bolts go, I wouldn’t of thought of that. That’s why I don’t do these type of jobs although I enjoy watching how it’s done. Keep up the good work.
I saw the New head bolts you got in the white card board box (that came with the head gasget) watch the whole series in future. General note. The 90 deg turn stretches the bolt and changes the metal structure in the bolt. (Thats the reason you always use new bolts).
Glad to see there wasn't a woodruff for the cam sprocket, good job you really shouldn't keep turning the torque wrench after the initial click as it's still applying torque and would be like using a breaker bar instead, I would also invest in an torque angle gauge they cost pennies and are more accurate than the eye
At least there’s a little room around the bay, I just did the vanos solenoids on a R56 with a N12 1.6 twin cam and that is possibly one of the tightest bays I have worked on
If you cut the top off 2 old head bolts you can use them as guide pins to locate the cylinder head accurately without risking damage to gasket. Head bolts assembly fluid or oil not WD40 as its a releasing fluid not a lubricant. Cheers 👍
Bloody hell you have done it again I stop the video to get a coffee come back and I have to wait until the next video lol, great video dude you are doing really well and good job on the mini mate
What gaskets are required besides head gasket and valve cover gasket and spark plug tube rings and exhaust manifold? Any others I will need? About to replace a head with shotty valves
Because even a stationary crank in an engine torn down this way requires a good bit of force to turn. Plus the chain held with the bungee cord means he knows it hasn't moved because the chain will be snug on the crank sprocket.
Wicked video dude really like your explanation of things and your attention to detail your camera angles are fine too . The spanner God's will be proud my brother take care ✌
@justin brown I tottaly agree I'm the same always do things myself it's easy when you do the right research and teach yourself save money and makes you feel good to look at what you've done 🖒
I'm sure you will do this. Make sure you change the oil with flushing oil and then again. I'm sure your have water etc in the sump. Also maybe pour a jug of oil over the cams before you put the rocker cover on. Good video thou
Get onto OPIE oils through ebay for good quality stuff. They recommended fuchs for my astra. It's never been quieter and longer lasting oil too. Hasn't used a drop.
I have a 2008 Mini Cooper S with 65K miles. Pep boys said, no pressure in 3 cylinders $8k for a new engine. I have heard $4k used engine, said "Timing chain went and pistons probably bend...probably and $5k (yet he's too special to look at it or be specific)...so I'm taking it to a real mechanic on Monday. I would chuck it as a lesson learned, but I can't afford a new car payment, and when it's running it's good. So, Best case scenario what is a rebuild like vs getting a used engine with same mileage? Sorry for the noob question.
cant wait to see it all running again. you have done a lot of work. regarding the head being skimmed, will the engine need to be 'ran in'' ? or does it just need a bedding in ? driven gently for the first hundred miles
I DID NOT USE THE OLD HEAD BOLTS!!!! If you watched the whole mini series you’d know the head gasket came with them 🤫
The Savage Garage hey savage me and you have the same bbq......... amazing 🔥

@Kris Nicholson simple spring torque wrenches like the one used do add extra torque. You will over torque

a good tip I got told years ago is to mark each nut/ bolt with a piece of white chalk as you tighten them its then easy to check if you missed any
Really enjoyed that rebuild James found it relaxing you are doing such a good job well done 👍

Good stuff James, would love to see a Celica project - can pick them up cheap
What gaskets are required besides head gasket and valve cover gasket and spark plug tube rings and exhaust manifold? Any others I will need? About to replace a head with shotty valves
Where did you find the details for re torquing the head bolts, looked like a Haynes manual but I thought they didn’t make them any more.
Im sure they still sell them in halfords or eurocar parts
Nice little trick with lining up the sprocket and chain, how did you know if the crankshaft stayed in place?
Because even a stationary crank in an engine torn down this way requires a good bit of force to turn. Plus the chain held with the bungee cord means he knows it hasn't moved because the chain will be snug on the crank sprocket.
Loving the mini videos mate keep up the good work 👌
Time to get an air compressor. Makes cleaning out those head bolt hole 100x easier.

Whats the manual you were looking at? Love the video.
Made sure with the mini you tightened the intake bolts up. Don’t want another Astra situation!! 🤣

Try a syringe and plastic pipe to de oil the head bolt holes, saves time and tissue.
Come on James bursting to see it run
Hi could you tell me if you tighten head bolts 11 and 12 also 90 degrees. Many thanks
I hope you turned the engine over by hand after fitting the head?
Another cracking video Savage.👍🏻
Well done mate. Quality content 💪
great content as always,,if i was being picky id say stop appologising as theres really no need. looking forward to the start up vid of the mini.
Brilliant video as expected
Nice work mate
I have a audi a4 2.4 v6. It needs a new head gasket and timing belt. Where can i find the torque for all the bolts?
I have a 2015 mini cooper s how much would it cost to forge the internals?and where would I find the parts I've looked everywhere
Can you tell us how much this job has cost you. A breakdown of all parts including skimming and total cost?
honest review I’ll be doing a video on exactly this!
Myself and everyone down on the farm loved the video. The donkeys told me to say hi to you 👋.

I'm sure you will do this. Make sure you change the oil with flushing oil and then again. I'm sure your have water etc in the sump. Also maybe pour a jug of oil over the cams before you put the rocker cover on. Good video thou

How did you stop the chain falling off the crank pulley at bottom ?
Top top channel ! Keep it coming. Ignore the hate my man.
Cheeky tip, rocker/head/cam covers come up well after a wash in a dishwasher.
And also ruin the dishwasher at the same time😂
Peter Gillam, well I’ve never had any issues, I’ve done rocker covers, callipers, other engine parts, hoses. 😂
Added content at 12:29,as two male Blackbirds declare their respective territories. An excellent video,I earned a lot.Cheers.
'learned' a lot,obviously.Sorry.
Nice job cracking on,
No chance of you scratching head face when you were pulling timing chain through ?
Keep your hair on guys, the new head bolts came with the head gasket kit.
Zadster why were they in the cardboard? That’s what confused me
@@A6RXN I guess it stops the bolts rolling around in transit and damaging each other? Dunno.
to become a mechanic do you have to attend school if you do what gcse do you need
Where did you get the thermostat housing from ?
Forgot to mention James over the summer im gonna be doing my head gaskets on the ST220 double the work double the parts lol.
Enjoying your vids
What is the book you have with all the correct torque measurements?
cian cole It’s probably a Haynes manual.
Marcus Maggs thank you
When's the next video up?
where did you get that book with the torque specs?
This is great content.👍 God knows why you get thumbs down??
Michael Davidson the internet lol
Trolls
Are there torque specs on that chain tensioner plug?
Awsome work 👌
Great video enjoyed that. Top work. Is that a 3/8s torque wrench your using?
Greay stuff :) hey when youve torqued the bolts down put a dot of paint on them so you know which ones have been done :)
Mate. Have you got a link for the toque wrench you have please as I need one my self
Oddly soothing, thanks
Hi mate just a tip I’ve been drilled into me when I was a tech never click the torque wrench twice as u can risk over torquing
Where did you get your tool trolley from ?
I thought that you would oiled up the camshaft etc before you put the rocker cover on
I thought the cam shaft bolt.is a torque to yield bolt and you need to out a new one in it.

Loving the series so far but cant help notice the fiesta and wondering when it'll be back
You need a supercharged mini next and modify it easily
all the cleaning residues from valve cover went on the grass... o man.. o man.. I like the cars but, I like the grass to.. Save the grass :)
you should do a price breakdown of how much it costs to do it yourself vs having a garage do it for you would be very interested in the results
