He showed me that a young dude can just pick up a backpack and go do a multiday hike on the most beautiful places completely alone. He shows the logistics, where he eats etc. It actually was the final push for me to actually start hiking instead of dreaming about it while watching lots of videos.

When you hike alone and you are a filmmaker, you have no choice to copy Kraig Adams haha (and he is not the first one, he is just the most popular). It's just a kind of content, and each person has their own storytelling.
    Sorry for my english.

I disagree- I actually think this is a broader trend on RUclips that’s been going on for quite a while. There have been similar successes in the bushcraft niche, such as Primitive Technology and Bertram, and my girlfriend watches similar content but in the cooking or family niches. Silent, minimalist, and content focused with a step away from the commercial bombardment that we’re exposed to.
Instead, great cinematography is being rewarded. Kraig is definitely a leader in this space but this extends far beyond him and hiking.
I think it’s great though and promotes much better content.

I feel Kraig really struck a great balance of production and reality. A lot of the shots have similar candid formats, but Kraig is really darn good at framing and it makes his work look fantastic. Ultimately, if you look at the actual presentation of his videos, they’re very simple and clean. That doesn’t make them easy to shoot or edit, but he has a really good format going that places clear emphasis on nature and travel while providing a relaxing experience. It’s not necessarily exciting, but it doesn’t need to be. I love sitting down and watching them, especially as a viewer of Kraig’s from his Wedding Film School and vlogging days.

I don't find his videos boring, but instead I find it very calming and refreshing. Since you bring up Casey Neistat, Kraig's video has a sharp contrast to Casey's chaotic fast paced style. I'm personally drawn to Kraig's videos because it authentically represents what hiking alone in a trial is...a lot of serene silence. I actually like the fact that he separates the talking either in another video or to the end, because then it does not disrupt the peaceful continuum.

I think Kraig’s recent videos may appear a little boring because the actually are? It’s easy to judge of course, but he seems to put less effort into them. Little variance in the shots, generic editing, music that doesn’t necessarily fit the images, more drone porn, ... They are still way better than most other hiking videos, but I often prefer rewatching one of his early ones rather than his recent work. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @OscarHikes
      @OscarHikes  3 года назад

Maybe, but I think he's only improving with each new video in terms of cinematography. The problem this year was that he wasn't able to go out to some cool locations, which in turn resulted in less-amazing sceneries. And his filming style relies on amazing sceneries to make his films interesting to watch. Anyway, I'm hyped to watch his new videos when covid ends.
Edit: *when travel restrictions ease down.

@@OscarHikes It depends on what you want to get out of watching these videos. Spectacular scenery helps of course, but a channel like Erik Normark (ruclips.net/user/fagelguiden ) for example provides very little "new" in each movie, yet people are drawn to them every time none the less. They are soothing and relaxing. I was drawn to Kraig's earlier videos because of the rhythm, the vibe, the athmosphere, the sounds. It's almost poetry, or even hiking ASMR. I think you can achieve that with less spectacular landscapes just as well - as I try to do in my videos. 😊

Is Craig not similar to "tim of the wild"? I love kraigs content and certainly don't find it boring but inspiring more than anything. I guess I didn't realize he was the first to make cinematic hiking videos but perhaps he's just the first to really get noticed. With as much content there is being put out every day it's hard not to "copy" someone else. I started making my videos in what I thought was my own way and later discovered Kraig who does his quite similar, but better! Again, inspiring to me. I certainly did not see his stuff then copy it lol but now I feel obligated to find another style. 🤦‍♂️

Recently started making these types of videos, obviously silent hiking videos are not a main stream topic, most people get bored but I think is better to do something that you like without thinking to be successful. Be true to what you want to do and try to find your own style. On copying Kraig Adams, I think the visual language is limited by the circumstances and it is logical that the videos look alike, but in my case it is not a deliberate copy. Of course Kraig Adams has made this genre popular and his work is inspiring and very well done.

How is this any different to reaction channels or gaming channels? It's very rare to find an original idea on youtube or even in the world. Look at large teach companies basically taking the same idea aka Air pods and all the other wireless ear buds. Yes i don't agree someone should copy EXACTLY the same format, but even with music style if you listen to heavy metal or rock a lot of bands have similar guitar cords / rhythms / breakdowns / screaming. I feel like it's just building on foundations. If you talk more to the camera whilst hiking, you might be accused of some other hiker, who talks whilst hiking. The comparison will never end.

My problem with most hiking videos is the LACK of talking and un-willingness to look into the camera and explain a few things, like history, legends, names of founders etc... Explain the gear and look at the camera. I don't like going on a trip with someone that is a ghost, I want to know what my Chaperone looks like and sounds like. This is why Erik Normark is my favorite channel, He makes me feel that I am really there on the trip with him. I can't stand seeing nothing but the chaperone's butt walking away from the camera.

To assume he owns the drone shot+Alaskan tapes+ tripod walk by shots is of course ridiculous. The thing is that Kraig is becoming “popular”. When more people start seeing what kraig does (and the amount of praise he gets for it), people will start doing the same. Think of it as vlogging, someone started with that once, now it is a staple. There is no soaring inspiring music in nature other than the weather so Id say the drone shots/ music and follow up after the video is what makes a copy. But showcasing a beautiful view and moment with a drone and sharing it with others its worth being called a copycat if thats the case. Its the monetization angle that really divides and undermines the nobility of the act and people doing this great work. I love it all.

Yeah, well, it is what it is. If you can get people to click on your videos, keep them watching as long as possible, and make a large portion of them check out other of your videos, RUclips will favor them over others. And Kraig is doing that better than any other Hiking RUclipsr, which is why he's at the top. Sadly people tend to copy everybody who is "famous" and its just annoying. Kraig is the opposite of all the ppl who are trying to jump on the same train to gain attention too. What makes him unique and honest in my opinion, is his ability to stay calm and balanced. No attention seeking, no endless self presentation, no loud music and in times where we are bombed by click baiters and narcicissts from all sides, he is a gift. As an introvert, when Kraigs content is described as "boing", lol, I absolutely cannot relate. For most of my life I am fucking bored by the activities of extraverts. They yell, they are loud, they always crave attention and its ok because of their own traits, but for introverts the noisy world is draining. Presumably having no particular affiliation with Mr. Kraig, these RUclipsrs don't need to tell the audience that. They could just let the videos show.
Purely my personal bias and speculation. A more rational, if not plausible, explanation is: Their videos would be showing up in searches of "Kraig Adams". The rest comes to a distant second in relevancy.

The thing with the internet is you live in your very own algorithm bubble and often rarely hear about people from different continents (I'm European).
That said, I just don't buy this "copying" thing - he's been doing it for only like 3 years which makes one think he might be the one copying someone else's style (and I could name a few!) who never actually tried hard enough to get super popular, or never intended to, as opposed to this Kraig guy.
On the other hand, there really is nothing wrong with all the hiking videos looking similar regardless of who's who. It's not like you can come up with something revolutionary here anyway - we all hike/film/watch it to relax. Some monetize it and some don't.

Good video Oscar. I just don't know my position in the whole "copying youtubers discussion". Like, Im huge fan of Kraig Adams, and I remember him also being "inspired" and copying from other content creators. And I don't think anybody is completely unique. I think it is impossible to fully copy someone, even if you try. the moment you copy someone, you will always put your own flavor to it. And you can improve over time. I remember the early hiking videos Kraig did, they were definitely not as good as his last 10 hiking videos. you could keep making silent hiking videos, and improve upon. Just like Kraig did.
Im pretty certain that kraig didnt invent "silent hiking" videos. but again, its a good video you made. Keep it up.

If your goal is to have the best monetized hiking channel you won't win by following him 1:1 like this as others are already better at it, but if you just want to record your memories then be all means go for it.

I disagree. Les Stroud is the original OG when it comes to this style of filmmaking. He literally created the selfie.
