I have been sharpening blades for a small secondary income for most of my life and my intuition on the steps that they put on the heavy, 55 Euro blade are for giving the knife multiple sharpening angles. The bigger part of the blade has a smaller angle, which would give the edge a longer life but it would not get quite as sharp. Toward the tip of the blade where the angle gets steeper, the edge should get sharper but will not last as long as the main body of the blade. I have never seen a blade made this way before and I really like it a lot. It makes sense to have the part of the blade that you would be using most often a more durable edge, and then at the tip keep an extra sharp portion that may not be used as often but will have that extra sharpness for when you may need it.
I also figured that this was more of a "survival knife" where you wouldn't be doing one motion with it, and has to compensate for multi-use. I'm NOT anything like you, but I figured the thicker blade would also be better for breaking bones on animals or chopping through fish bones (like quartering game or chopping off the heads off fish). Then the more flatter, sharper tip is more for skinning and gutting. Other uses for the thicker part is chopping 2" sticks into more manageable sizes for fire of structures. I also really love the design.

10:25 the thicker part of the knife is useful for hammer-cutting big logs into smaller splinters. Very useful feature for a multi-purpose knife. You put the knife's thick blade on top log and hit the back of the blade with another log, back of a hachet or hammer, cutting and splitting very thin splinter from the log that ignites and burns easily. For anyone who uses wood-fired heat sources while camping/on deployment, a small and light wood splintering tool is a nice quality-of-life improvement. Of course you'd probably have some axe or hachet somewhere which you use to cut the wood in the first place which could fulfill the same role, but they are generally somewhat cumbersome to use in hammer cutting and generally work better as hammer than cutter. Also, the groove between the knife point and the axe-blade is good measurement tool when skinning animals, as it helps you measure the depth of your cut and make it constant. The constant cut helps preserve the quality of the pelt and prevents unneccessary cuts to the meat which can accelerate spoiling process. The cuts on the back of the blade can be used to rasp fish scales off, and gives a good non-slip thumb-rest while doing something that requires force behind cut. The knife even has a small cut-out and slot at the end of the handle which fits a tool-saver (a springy cord that attaches to the tool and to the tool holder, or a small bright glow-in-the-dark flag) that prevents you from losing the knife if it falls off your hand- which is important due to the dirt color of the handle, making it easy to lose into mud or sandy underbrush should you drop it It is most definetely not a 'fighting knife' though, the grooves on the back make it hard to pull the blade out of your target, the knife edge is too wide and too irregular to slide in easily, and the blade has that splintering edge that doesn't cut or stab too well. Yeah, you *could* stab someone with it, like you could stab someone with screwdriver or box cutter, but for dedicated fighting knife you'd want something that slides in easily, doesn't get caught in the ribs, and has somewhat thin, long blade with good taper and a channel on the side or the back which prevents wounds from suctioning the blade. It's better to have a knife with which you can stab multiple times in quick succession than have a thick, short and wide blade that gets caught easily. Then again, I'm pretty sure everyone knows that already so I'm probably just preaching to the choir...
I fell asleep watching this video. Not because it was boring, but because I was tired and it's like listening to the calming tales of a wise old uncle.

D-2 steel is tuff steel. I worked at a nail Factory. Heat treated D-2 steel is what they used for the "punch" it is a piece of Steel that would punch the heads on to nails. The type of nails we made were nail clips for, nail guns. Framing nail guns for 2 X 4 wood. Building the frames for houses. That is some tough ass steel & hard! Each punch. Die would last for hundreds of thousands of nails, maybe 1 million?
Idk of you know or if anyone else said anything. But the expensive “exotic” knife is a Damascus knife. That’s why it has that pattern. When the blade was made they took two separate materials, could both be a type of steel but a separate kind usually, and they put them together in layers and then folded and squashed it several times as they forged it in specific patterns to give it that design in the final product.
That last knife has what is known as a san mai steel blade. They laminate three pieces of steel together so it can have the durability of the outer steel, but the sharpness of a harder steel in the center.
Yes, I read up about that in the mean time. I really like that knife, it is beautiful and unconventional. This one goes into the collection and not into the Knife Destroyer 3000.
I like the weird shape of the multitool and the fighting knife. I'm now on their mailing list, and will probably order one or both sometime soon. Thanks for the recommendation, Jorg!
This is why I love the Germans. They really like proper quality of knives and just weapons in general. That's pride that you can only find in very few places.
The secret to being able to sell knifes this insanely cheep is a combination of buying materials in bulk, cutting costs on design (usually by stealing them), buying the cheapest materials possible, and the most important ingredient, paying your laborers abysmal wages, like the people who actually make these products are paid as close to nothing as possible.
Just love you MAN, all the experiments you perform, the "funny" laugh and the whole scenery you always setup for us. Cheers from Cyprus (the GREEK, Christian Orthodox, part).. A White Hat.

I just went to a flea market yesterday where I picked up that same knife the olive drab green one, but about 6 inches long so I'm glad to see this video to put my new favourite knife to the test i love the design. I wish I could show you a picture its exactly the same even the sheathe it has a flint though.
I agree. But i feel like theres 2 types of items. The first type is as cheap as possible and complete crap and the second type is only slightly more expensive and a lot better quality. You just shouldn't buy the very cheapest item in most cases.
A cool project for you since you have been doing crossbows a lot lately in the video game Dark Souls there is a triple shot crossbow I think that would be a good challenge for you
The sanrenmu Land knives are actually pretty sweet! They all come super sharp and I have several that I just love for under 20$! Their Land regular liner locks are so awesome. And the land 9103 and 9104. Some of my favorite budget knives
As a former steel worker I can assure you that standing that close to your "torture device" without protection was quite dangerous. if the blades wouldnt have held up. they could have broken from the inpact and come flying towards you in a deadly speed.
I know I'm pretty late to the party but you were wondering why the shape of the black handled blade and the fighting knife were like that. The thick step and the one sided edge are for wood splitting! One is designed to use with a blunt object to apply force to the back (the thick step down) and the other is designed to wedge split.
"Bye bye blade...and fire.....wow! that was pretty damn impressive nothing happened- lets inspect the damage!" Best line ever..especially from the chillest German I have ever seen
That multi-tool looks like a trowel to me. Does it have a secondary bevel? I can't tell from the video. About that 55 euro knife: the bevels are there to re-enforce the cutting edge. D2 is a high carbon (1.5%) stainless steel, with some other elements like vanadium and molybdenum. It's mainly a tool steel. It's corrosion resistance is limited compared to other steels with high chromium content. Did the tip really break off? Or did it just get flattened a bit?
the "fighting knife" at 10:30 has that step im guesing because that section of the blade is used for more heavy duty things like if you were out in the woods you would use that part to chop while the tip section remains thin to give you the advantanges of a thinner blade, like if you were gutting a fish all in all it seems like a good design for a camping/ hunting pack knife
Still a great comparison and 'torture test' even years later, and if anything, some of today's so-called _'Cheap Chinese Knives'_ have become terrific values, especially for most folks' everyday use 'IRL'... thx, Joerg!
I think the blade configuration on the "Fighting Knife" is designed like that so, it can be a Chopper(fatter base) and, good for Stabbing(Thinner Point). Just a thought.
wonderful review! I was wondering how you chose the knives? will most of them hold good as your selected ones? I bought few Chinese steels which hold good like yours, but from a shop after holding them and testing the edge and built. how do you do a selection online?
I bought a machete from the flea market earlier this year and it looks exactly like this knife, except larger obviously. Same paracord wrap, same style sheath. Not bad for 5 bucks.
I have Sanrenmu Land folding knife, best folding knife i have ever bought. Dirty cheap, sharp and sturdy, keeps blade edge really well, i use it daily and never had to sharpen it
the pattern on the 91 euro knife are the multiple layers by the creation of damascus steel. There are some amazing forging videos on youtube. Using different techniques with stacking/turning/folding the steel will create different beautiful patterns when treated with oil and will also strengthen the steel. Do some searches, im sure you will like it.
please do more of these tests!!!! Maybe do a few spine whack tests, this will test the strength of the lockup mechanism a lot better then going Edge down. Maybe also consider doing some popular knives as well I know a lot of RUclips channels do this but I think you could come up with more interesting ways to test these blades then they can. Your homemade machines never fail to impress so I think you would do well in this! It's always amazing to see ur machines at work .
10:27 I think it's there, so the user can see which side to use for what. So the longer blade is for chopping wood, cutting paracord and all that stuff, while the top of the blade is used less to keep it sharp for things that need precision like carving fine wood or something like that
Great point at 1:00. I really appreciate your integrity Joerg. I live in China since 2004. I have an amazing knife collection. Some authentic, many copies. Some great, some ultra cheap knock-offs. But when possible I always buy quality knives from the original designer 😎👍.
On the 91 euro knife it's blade, is a hardened steel out base which is folded in forging and that acid eached to make tjhe pattern which the has a has a probs harded steel sheet in side to prevent thermal cracking when folding and est. So the metals has diffent colours due to one being perpousley folding in the folding proses, and the other having a flatteden finish.

Fun fact: metals dont have a smell (except mercury). The smell we get is when it reacts with our skin, or when its oxidised
Ha, that is good. It would be a shame to destroy some a lovely looking knife.
Profile pic and comment don't add up.
You're right but I made this account when I was a cringy boy. I just never changed anything.
That's one beast of a fighting knife.

Watches in horror as Joerg hammers the knife into a piece of structural steel.

I wish I could show you a picture its exactly the same even the sheathe it has a flint though.
hes so wholesome, hes talking about knives and its the most wholesome shit ever
Cheap does not necessarily means low quality, Cheap sometime means advanced Industrial.
I agree. But i feel like theres 2 types of items. The first type is as cheap as possible and complete crap and the second type is only slightly more expensive and a lot better quality. You just shouldn't buy the very cheapest item in most cases.

Cheap can be "good enough", or it can be "absolute crap".
Or it can be progress.
A pair of the cheapest american jeans avaliable are better made and cheaper than what they had in the 60's.
Inexpensive is the word you use, cheap is by definition Not inexpensive but indicates low value, low quality.
I love the slowmotion and how he slowly gets a smile in his face when he's creating massive wounds :D
Thumbtack machine gun?
MrStingBlade I like that idea seems clever and if you could get it to fire right it would be good visually for target practice.
I love that sarcasm for the trigger mechanism
A cool project for you since you have been doing crossbows a lot lately in the video game Dark Souls there is a triple shot crossbow I think that would be a good challenge for you
The sanrenmu Land knives are actually pretty sweet! They all come super sharp and I have several that I just love for under 20$! Their Land regular liner locks are so awesome. And the land 9103 and 9104. Some of my favorite budget knives
Since I can't try to cut the wood with the knives I just count the amount of "wow"s you say to judge how good it is :)
Hey. Ich habe vor mir ein paar von den Messern zu kaufen. Hattest du Probleme mit dem Zoll, als du die Messer bekommen hast?
I nearly pissed myself when the honk went off
As a former steel worker I can assure you that standing that close to your "torture device" without protection was quite dangerous. if the blades wouldnt have held up. they could have broken from the inpact and come flying towards you in a deadly speed.
*Serial killer faking a delivery man and knocks joergs door*

Joerg : "Hahahahhahah,is that all you got?"
I love the complicated trigger assembly. You should patent that ASAP!!!
The second knife is based on a spyderco, a discontinued one
And the last one is based off a benchmade.

Q:"How do they do it???"
A:Slaves, child slaves.
And massive economy's of scale.
I LOVE his voice
the "fighting knife" at 10:30 has that step im guesing because that section of the blade is used for more heavy duty things like if you were out in the woods you would use that part to chop while the tip section remains thin to give you the advantanges of a thinner blade, like if you were gutting a fish all in all it seems like a good design for a camping/ hunting pack knife

Still a great comparison and 'torture test' even years later, and if anything, some of today's so-called _'Cheap Chinese Knives'_ have become terrific values, especially for most folks' everyday use 'IRL'... thx, Joerg!

@@del_real000-nl8 Thank you for the clarification. I dont think anyone would have figured it out.
I think the blade configuration on the "Fighting Knife" is designed like that so, it can be a Chopper(fatter base) and, good for Stabbing(Thinner Point). Just a thought.
“It’s a bit edgy”
wonderful review! I was wondering how you chose the knives? will most of them hold good as your selected ones? I bought few Chinese steels which hold good like yours, but from a shop after holding them and testing the edge and built. how do you do a selection online?
What happened if he made a slingshot shoot a slingshot?
volcrom falsch
He already did
He did : ruclips.net/video/Jo4is5A2kGU/видео.html
I bought a machete from the flea market earlier this year and it looks exactly like this knife, except larger obviously. Same paracord wrap, same style sheath. Not bad for 5 bucks.
They do it by next to slave labor salary, and currency manipulation
Can't argue with that!
I have Sanrenmu Land folding knife, best folding knife i have ever bought. Dirty cheap, sharp and sturdy, keeps blade edge really well, i use it daily and never had to sharpen it
can you actually make some normal slingshots
the pattern on the 91 euro knife are the multiple layers by the creation of damascus steel. There are some amazing forging videos on youtube. Using different techniques with stacking/turning/folding the steel will create different beautiful patterns when treated with oil and will also strengthen the steel. Do some searches, im sure you will like it.
"How do the chinese do it?"
Slave and child labor, Jeorg.

lmao the facial expressions in the slowmos are hilarious XD
please do more of these tests!!!!
So the longer blade is for chopping wood, cutting paracord and all that stuff, while the top of the blade is used less to keep it sharp for things that need precision like carving fine wood or something like that
hx outdoor... the blade has a step in it so that u can use the thicker part for chopping and batoning and the slimer tip for carving
Hey jeorg! I really like that boot knife you got there with a paracord wrap. Wonder how good it throws. I might order a few of them
Great point at 1:00.
