Today I visited the most depressed city in Belgium: Charleroi. Where I experienced what it's like having a football matchday experience at the most depressed football club... Which was very depressing but also very meaningful.

The thing with the pregame "show" and the use of "You'll never walk alone" was actually in honour of their speaker who tragically passed away a few days ago (the song is usually not used in Charleroi) ... still a strong tribute for a man who had been part of the club for years before. I was there and even though they were having mic issues, we gotta keep in mind that it was this speaker's first game in charge, and not in the best conditions !
The problem in Charleroi isn't the center of the city, it are the suburbs where you can find all the coal mines and factories, back in the 50s, Charleroi was one of the best developped city in Belgium. Still credits to their fans for always making ambiance even if it's not going great with the club

Jeff was the former stadium announcer who tragically passed away recently.

Sporting Charleroi is a great club, with dedicated fans and lots of history. For me, by far the best club in the french speaking side of my country 🇧🇪

That's because Belgium is split in 2 parts. Vlaanderen & Wallonie.
Vlaanderen / The Northern part of Belgium speaks mostly Dutch/Vlaams (Vlaams being Dutch but with an other accent than the Dutch they speak in the Netherlands, sometimes to the point that people from the Netherlands don't understand us)
Wallonie / The Southern part of Belgium speaks mostly French (also with a different accent than the people in France, although it's very similar to the French they speak in Northern France, only with a handful of different words and numbers being used in the Belgian French)
And to end it off, we have a tiny part of Belgium near the German border where people mostly speak German, but as far as i know this is just the same German as in Germany.
So yeah, Belgium is pretty strange but still we are very unique. We have 3 main languages in Belgium. At school everyone learns French and Dutch, with some people optionally learning German (this is mostly people who are following less technical lessons at school & are going to go to Highschool or University, people who for ex. are going to school to become a bricklayer, woodworker etc, usually don't get German, ofcourse there's always exceptions.)
Also, you had trouble finding someone that speaks English because the people who speak French usually have a hard time learning other languages, it's just the way French works is totally different than other languages, with the exception of Spanish , Romanian, Portuguese..
If you would've gone to Flanders, there nearly everyone would speak English fluently.
Even though we have languages that mostly belong to other countries, we are proud of our accents, our beer, our food, and our country and culture. The only thing all of us aren't proud of, are our corrupt politicians :)

Ik woon nu 14 jaar in Charleroi, meer bepaald Couillet., het is waar dat ik er 1,5 jaar over moeten doen om er te wennen. Maar zeggen dat we er ongelukkig zijn nee. De mensen zijn er vriendelijk, de kinderen gaan er naar goeie scholen, ze sporten op hoog niveau.
Kun je waar jji woont de minder goeie buurten laten zien...kan ik ook lachen.
Ik ben afkomstig uit het Gentse en woon ook al 15 jaar in Charleroi, meer bepaald Jumet. Charleroi - Antwerp is niet bepaald DE wedstrijd van het jaar. Ga er eens een match tegen Anderlecht, Brugge of zelfs Standaard kijken en je zal wel een andere match zien als deze. Zoals in een vorige commentaar genoteerd, ze zijn op tragische manier hun speaker verloren. Die nieuwe man doet zijn best en het was bovendien zijn eerste match waar hij speaker was. Geef hem tijd en blijf niet bij de eerste indruk. Dus ik raad je aan eens terug te komen en deze reportage opnieuw te doen 😊

I don't live in Charleroi but in the Ardennes (Durbuy), and honestly even if Charleroi is a city where I wouldn't like to live... I clearly can after having been there many times and in quite a few different places . That the Netherlands is just as depressive, except that in your country it's everywhere. It's always gray and the wind blows in your face constantly, summer and winter. Because there is absolutely no relief it is simply... Flat, everything is flat.

Charleroi is indeed not a super pretty city, all this comes from its history, it is an industrial city that needs to rebuild itself and within 10 years, I think we will see a considerable improvement. Don't think this video represents the situation, just as your club brugge video. Away end in charleroi is never sold out, that's not allowed. Everyone in belgium will admit charleroi has great fans. You were sitting in the family stand and came at a moment when the fans completely disagreed with the club. Give club brugge and charleroi a new chance you will be really surprised by the atmosphere of both

It's a shame that they chose to film the darkest corners of the city when there are so many beautiful things to film in the city. As for the crowds, there are plenty of them in the city on Sundays, just go to the morning market. The price could also have been lower if you had gone to the stand opposite to the one you were at, i.e. the presidential stand.
À Dutch guy went there surfing on the Dutch article about Charleroi being the most depressed city in the world. He had an agenda to make view before he arrived. A shame. I live there. But he was not completely negative. Sunday is quiet in Wallonia because shops are usually close and people enjoy family time.
So the old stadium speaker of Charleroi died . He served the club 20 Years long and Now the gave him appreciation in this game and the ultras made a choreo for him

Since Standard Liege is financially suffering, there are no major club anymore in Wallonia. Let's hope a new owner will make this wonderful club coming back. We miss the historical battle against Anderlecht.

I'm surprised Charleroi is considered the most depressed city. It's actually the very first time I hear of this. I've been there a few times and it was a pleasant experience. It is a bit boring but than again that's the case for about 90% of all Benelux cities haha

You really should consider coming to the Antwerp v Beerschot derby next month. It's a heated rivalry, probably one of the biggest in Belgium. Compare it to Ajax - Feyenoord.

Nowadays €24 (converted to British pounds) wouldn't get you to watch some clubs in the English 3rd division. 😮
We don't get as much tickets as the away end can hold, that is why it isn't full. A couple of years ago we got the whole capacity of the away end in tickets and it was full of course. And yeah sitting on an awayday is a shame but it's a minority of the people.
Hello, I am a supporter of Lokeren-Temse in Belgium, I have been watching your videos for a long time. Last season my team was promoted for the 2nd time in a row after we went bankrupt in 2020 and we have now been promoted to the Belgian 2nd division Because we play in the 2nd division, we have a derby against SK Beveren again after 6 years. The match is the first weekend of October (3-5) but the exact hours are not yet known. So if you are interested you can always come and watch there is always chaos.

It is better to come on Saturday, it is nicer and take the time to visit the suburbs (the slag heaps, the mine,... the local beer) (the center is not really pretty)

Tout le monde est parti aux 60 km de plages des Lacs de l'eau d'Heure. Comme beaucoup de hollandais. C'est au sud de Charleroi qu'il fait aller, Bomerée, Montignies le Tilleul, Gozée et Thuin .... un autre monde avec des villas à perte de vue. Si il avait été au Bultia, il aurait vu le beau coté de Charleroi.

in all seriousness another great video but I think there’s more depressed places in my country Scotland and it’s horrible and is a worldwide problem and as a sufferer of it for many years I hope anyone reading this reaches out and talks to someone as that’s what I done and I manage my mental health a lot better these days and probably wouldn’t be here without reaching out for the help so just reach out don’t bottle it and thanks groundhopper for highlighting such a big issue hope to see you back in Scotland soon 🏴👍

Actually a shame to see a top team not filling the away end at Charleroi, its the best away stand you can get in Belgian competition ( in amounts of capacity) Anderlecht away games are always sold out, when you then play at Charleroi you fill the away end with 2000 people and got some nice atmosphere.

I'm a bit disappointed in this vid.. not much research was done.. the away end seems to be sold out, as only tickets for mid section are sold there...away end has one of the coolest bars in the league (on top of the stand). The stadium was also a Euro2000 stadium and had 3(!!!!!) Rings not just what it is now.....
