  • Welcome back to the sweet science your go to channel for all beginner boxing lessons.
So your an orthodox boxer, or your a southpaw boxer, does that mean you should only ever stay in that stance though ?
    Most coaches would say yes
There are some advantages to being able to box out of both stances though
Cutting off the ring quickly by switching stances.
Shutting down angles by switching .
Getting back onto your opponent quickly by switching
Of course the main thing is being able to have a good foundation in the opposite stance and to be able to do your footwork in the opposite stance
There is a tactical advantage to being southpaw but only if you know how to fight out of an open stance , if your just going to mirror how you fight in a closed stance it’s not going to work but the first stage of finding out if you like switch hitting is to see how you feel doing drills in the opposite stance so here’s a few ideas for you to try in your shadow boxing or bag work firstly to see if switch hitting is for you .
Maybe we will do a little series on the subject if there’s enough interest

You are onto a useful topic here. Some drills to transition from one to the other & then back would be useful.
Or some combos that utilise both stances to wrong-foot the opponent.

It’s definitely not for everyone my friend and a lot of coaches will tell you not to do it but if interest is enough il definitely work some drills into a little series for everyone 👍🥊

I like the idea of switching but it's not something I've done much of. Some drills would be very handy that you can use in sparring. The main criticism I've heard is that it leaves you vulnerable because you're less able to defend in the opposite stance? What do you reckon?

That’s definitely not true everyone who says that doesn’t know how to defend in an open stance yes it’s definitely, it’s completely different so just switching isn’t enough , knowing how to defend , how to attack , which lane to be in, what’s available in that lane and punch pattern probability, so there’s a lot to it brother but …. It has a lot of advantages if you can work your head round it all 👍🥊
