The reason why luxury cars look tacky these days is because many of the buyers are new rich in Asia who like to show off, unlike in the old days where most of the buyers were Americans and Western Europeans.
The crayon smell comes from the adhesive they use to put all the interior pieces together, BMW, Merc, Volkswagen and Audi all used it so that’s why they all smell like that when they’re older.
It's so weird that some E38s completely avoid developing the crayon smell. My personal 1998 740iL has the crayon smell but my 1997 750iL does not have it. Neither does my dad's 2001 740i, or my previous 2001 740iL. My first E38 was also a 1998 and it had the crayon smell too.
mitchgo _ A lot of it has to do with how it was stored. If it was garage kept most of its life it’s less likely to develop the crayon smell. But if it sits outside the heat is what causes the adhesive to make that smell after a while.
I've owned BMWs since 1995 and this was my 3rd one. It drove like a large 3 series. I had the '01 Sport short wheel base - the sporty shorty. I was a fool for getting rid of it, but the reality is that you need to plan on $1500 in repairs above and beyond the maintenance costs. So it's a car that costs $2500/year to keep on the road. This was peak BMW. It's been a sh** show with them ever since.
I have a W211 E Class (one of the best in terms of build quality below the W123 and W124) and now if I jump in some of the new Mercedes cars, they are pretty underwhelming, especially the C Class, it disappointed me so much!
@@DavidGarcia29497 agreed. Mercedes are still nice but you have to get to an e class or gle to see it again. Like BMW, they've mistaken half baked tech for luxury.

I grew up in an E38 long wheel base and would sit backwards in the rear foot wells and use the seat as a table to draw. It was all black with 19” M wheels. Such a badass car
It's 18' M wheel sir I still have it and love it
Yo, I love almost everything you guys publish. Another review, another 20 minutes well spent. Bravo!!
The steering wheel came on the “Sport” package. I remember shopping for these back in the day.
Samuel, wrong sport package steering wheel was different style than the one shown in video, one in the video was retrofitted to the car👍🏼
Yea the factory e38 sport wheel had a larger airbag.
Yep, the sport package wheel would have a double parallel spoke on the bottom. That one is off an E39 M5 or E46 M3. [I have installed a paddle-shift wheel off an E46 M3 SMG to my E53 X5 4.6is - looks just like the one in this E38, but with paddle shifts]
Although I wasn’t a fan of the grille, I have to admit, this new 7 Series has a lot of road presence when you see one in person.
I saw one in person and yes it has road presence but it looks more like a big chunky american sedan than a good old classy bmw... it honestly spoiled my mood
Well duh, the grille is the size of Montana. Rosie O'Donnell has a lot of road presence as well.
@@Fedethedangerous95 ironically they did that for chinese customers
@@spedracer55 that's not really surprising...
danger450, don’t be an idiot all your life. The Audi A8 has a much larger grille than the 7 Series, but it somehow still blends into the crowd. It’s more than just the large grille that makes the 7 stand out.
one simple sentence : old but gold
The more I watch these old vs new episodes on this channel the more I understand why people say “old is gold”.
Love the show!
Please do the same with Roles and Bentley. Interesting to watch new Mercedes vs BMW as dome with Roles and Mercedes
Almost 6k is a way to much for that condition e38, literally live 30min form that dealership, i should stop in and see what the salesman is smoking 😂
😂 he prolly try to share it with you to get you to buy it at that price 💀
@@dussemccussay3995 I'll take it for a drive but it will be worth substantially less once I put it through its paces to see what mechanically needs work 😂
I just saw one of these for $1200 OBO near me with 200,000 miles :)
Indeed, that particular car should be cheaper, a lot of homework to do and isn't worth it, buy a more expensive decent condition one and it will saves you from tons of homework
I agree, i sold my 750iL 2000 which was black and black and everything worked for $5k (that was about 5+ years ago)
I own e38, and it's perfect. I would love to own it whole life
It will break your wallet sir/ma the cost of repair
Go ahead
740d is best e38
I literally left my job in sales to become a mechanic just because the E38 bug bit me. I have owned and restored over 60 of them and I have mastered the timing chain system in Atlanta.
@@mrknowitallyah6058 Wow that is impressive
Every BMW built before 2006 was and will be legends, they were built with a soul.
The reason why luxury cars look tacky these days is because many of the buyers are new rich in Asia who like to show off, unlike in the old days where most of the buyers were Americans and Western Europeans.
Love the old vs new comparisons. Keep em coming 👍
Blah blah blah... You are telling bullshit, buddy!
@@Porsche1969 Please leave the internet.
First time in my life I hear about the crayon smell. Non of my bmws of these period smells like that. Just leather.
I liked this car (E38) so much, I had 3 at once at one point. As for the 2020 one, I'll wait a decade or so before thinking of getting one lol
I love these vs episodes. Keep it up!
"It looks like a pig ate a bee and had an allergic reaction" - modern BMW styling in a nutshell
Best car reviewers on RUclips. The best!
@@bassandtrebleclef 100% agree
@bassandtrebleclef For you to have that history with bmw, state those running costs, & say that era was peak bmw (which I agree with), says alot. Sad indeed. Logic & commonsense prevent me from getting into the bmw game this late. Still want to, but seems that ship has sailed. The good ones are so old now, finding one that isn't 100% trashed seems highly unlikely.
1500 a year to keep a car of this category on the road is not much. Try that with a new 7 series. It will probably be much much more
I'm glad the guy kept complimenting the 2001 740i, the car is amazing, I have 2 740iL's and 1 740i, and they never disappoint. Great review!
If it's anything like my e46, he probably has three just for the spare parts.
@Death trooper Reliable and old bimmers do not go in the same sentence without the word "not" in between.
why would have 2 of the same car and 1 that's barely any different?
It’s the sound insulation that gives BMW’S of this era that gives it the crayon smelling interior.

Cool channel guys! I just opened a ****load of other videos to binge watch. & Subbed!
Thanks buddy welcome to the channel!
“The last time that saw a tablet it was the Rosetta Stone” lmao 😂 omg 😆
Tomorrow Never Dies is the first thing I think of when I see these.
Love the way the rear seatbelts go the opposite way in the old 7 series!!
1:54 wow I never realised how big the new 7 series actually is, compared to the old one which is also massive
15:05 - just bought an E38 and can confirm that at least more than one has the thing where the chair will sit at a wonky angle (still working on a fix)
Hey guys, good video, but that E38 was pretty rough... I know of several very nice E38s in Ontario, including a super-rare Alpina B12 if you guys really want to see what a good E38 looks like.
Cheers!
It only had 3 lug bolts!!! I wouldnt trust that dealer if they think thats ok to give to customers or journalists.
Lol yea this was a questionable example of a e38...
I love these new vs old comparison, please keep it up! Really enjoyed the 4Runner one as well
1:44 Are you guys driving on 3 lugbolts?
Not even spaced out 😭
No, they drift on 3 lugbolts! :D
Eh 2 will do
JAMES, that was a simple yet classic conclusive remark you made.
James' conclusion was bang on. But I still want the old one to take all my friends around on fun trips.
Yeah, I owned a e38 7 series for 11 years. A fantastic car to drive with a fantastic beautiful deep green color.
oystla I can hear Tyler Hoovie saying GREEEEEEN
Let me guess. It was fantastic...👌
Woooooo new intro "if you're new to throttle house".
That Supra slo mo shot was fuckin dope
If I had to choose between both cars for the same price and new, I'd much rather take the old one. Even without most of those high tech features.
This new 7 series just looks just abysmal.
oh0stv that’s the dumbest shit I ever read
E38 is way better. It's a legend and a gangsta whip
Amen. Newer bummers look like clown cars next to the elegant timeless e38 and e39.
I sold my f10 528 and kept my e39 528 because it drives better
@@Thecryptoconspiracist dude, the E38 is a legend. I don't know what BMW designers are smoking these days, but I'd rather have the old one.
That's said, I surely wouldn't pay 150k for it, if you ment that.
Computers in cars make them last much less
Love this series guys... well done!!!
The intro was amazing
😂😂
Fun fact: the E38 is the first car to come with a colored 5.6' screen from factory
No, IT was 4.5. later a 7 inch
You saw that on Doug channel
SWB 740i with those M parallel wheels is the best configuration for the best looking 7 series
Nah... Long wheel base sport pack on m parralel. Also... In 01 you could get a 750i sport. In bright red. It was sick
Actually its impossible for BMW to produce another legend after they made the awesome extraordinary e38 ❤
I’ve owned a 98 740iL for years. Lowered on 20’ period correct Alpina rims. I’ve owned a 911,M3,S4,Alfa’s over the years. I’ve receive more compliments from teenagers to adults about the 7 than any of the others. It’s a timeless design
You can get both 😂
That ending was epic.
Just bought a 2001 BMW 740i swb M-sport. this video sums it up perfectly
Enjoy
Redline Raphael l bought one four months ago with the bad timing guides, I paid $400 for it and $1500 to get it fixed! My plan is to restore it and keep it to be my daily I really like how it looks and how it handles. 👍🏽
Honestly, didn’t think those grills were that huge...
Until i spotted an x7 last night😂😂
the more you look at the new car, the more you want the old one!
What an excellent consumer point you make at the end, there 🤣
Haha that intro was hilarious! Nice one!
Awesome video, the older BMW is still my favorite. That grill on the new one looks way to hungry!!!😂😂😂
100 % and plus the new one looks more muscular
