Did you say that is a $400 knife? Then what are the G-10 versions, not that inferior to the CF, I see FS for $80 (this IS 4 years later)? If they are Reate (ARE they still Reate?), that seems like a gigantic bargain (even if they can’t be disassembled)!
"Unless you have little bitch hands like me" That made me laugh harder than it probably should have. Love that you have a sense of humor about yourself, I think not taking oneself to seriously is good for ones health.
Well, Todd Begg is the designer, and his brother stole the company from him... so strictly speaking this is not a Todd Begg knife but a knock-off. His brother has gone full betrayal by having the knife made in China. One thing's for sure, Begg Knives is never going to get another Todd Begg design. Having said all that a genuine Todd Begg knife is kind of out of my price range. And I'd simply never buy a knife that I couldn't take apart to service. that's an absolute deal breaker.
I wouldn't buy this knife if it were a $150 knife. I'd buy a Todd Begg knife. He makes a friction folder version that sells for less money than this knockoff. Having a nice friction folder should you decide to visit a country that doesn't allow locking blades is a good "in case" reason, plus you've got a friction folder which is a knife style that goes back to the Roman Legions.
Im pretty sure they sell non-fluted glimpses, so your first bad is really a choice Edit: i checked, now i am certain you can get non fluted blades. Theyre cheaper too
Lots of fun to clean after serving a thick slice or baked brie with jam to the wife at the campfire. Worst case scenario. This ugly runt fails on practicality, looks, and a grey shade of desirability. Nothing about how this lump looks makes me want to buy it, much less want to pick it up and flip it. Gross. Stopped the review at 2:05. Never done that - ever on any video on your channel. Lose it down the sewer on the way someplace, and hope it doesn't breed with something weirder down there. Not that it's bulbous or ungraceful or ameturish looking. Yes it is. Bring on the gems please.
Reative solutions 😂 love that one!! They definitely need to do some more slicy grinds. Even their FFG stuff like the Baby Machine is too thick behind the edge like you said.
How much is it? Edit: Forgot to mention: The knife is beautiful! Nice cute Beg revision. I like it. I presume it's expensive, but I also hope it's not THAT expensive but it's one of few knives from Beg I can afford (?). I agree with everything Nick says about it. I'm still interested strange enough... :X. I justed hearded from Nick in the 14th minute it's 400 dollars. Wtf? O M G !!! "The price is ugly here" [Nick]. Yes it is. Forget 'bout it. I'm out.
For what you get I feel it's pretty much what you should expect... Look at the price of a Todd Begg Bodega if you want to see crazy. Again they are ASSEMBLED by Reate he says in the beginning unless that was a slip of the tongue it means Todd still has a hand in their creation. It's a gorgeous knife with lots of small details and the fact it's no longer a friction folder is awesome.
@@Osprey1994 I have to agree-- $400 is no doubt a lot of money but this has out performed any knife I've ever carried. It's like owning a Ferrari without the hassles & maintenance.
I don't think a $50 fell out of the handle upon shipment, more like two $100s. Took me a minute to realize that row-co-co was actually rococo (/rəˈkōkō/)
I have the much larger WE version in black, satin blade w/the black DLC'ed fuller w/holes. (I had to take delivery of 2 until I got one w/no weird voids in the CF, though). It's a big & thick, but I kind of like it in my collection for those reasons.. It's different. I would LOVE to have this purple-blue ano with cracked ice on the clip, backspacer and pivot. That would give it more Todd-Begg-style points. I believe my pivot is captured and definitely NOT glued shut. (Nick, you did a disassembly of a mini Bodega by Reate and it was not glued shut?). I think the blade on my knife is ground better for cutting, too. Love the DQ comments 🍔🍟and is my hearing going or did Nick say that he has "bitch hands"? 👩🏻💅 LOL!
Not only that but Dairy Queen DOES have great burgers. (Enough with the British English - "Coca Cola do make a good beverage"...no...Coca Cola DOES make a good beverage).
The we glimpse inlays were crazy well done. I can’t speak for their other models but the glimpse they did was as good as any inlay I have seen to date.
Joshua Burkhead mine has good inlays, but I went thru 2 knives until I got one with no "irregularities" in the Carbon fiber itself. Love the ano and the cracked ice on this one tho.😬
With CNC machining capable of cutting an inside part to fit perfectly inside an outside part, even complex shapes, a perfect fit on inlays is a practical necessity today. Does Reate guarantee their knives against failures of manufacturing and materials? If the owner is prevented from maintaining it him(her)self, that SHOULD include maintenance!
$350 is ok, but $400 is too much? Either one is ridiculous. Hopefully one day someone will create something unusual and interesting. The flipper has been done.
holes in the fuller? why, for heavens sake.. should have stopped while they were still ahead. otherwise very attractive....omg $400! at this price, i am going to buy sebenzas and inkosas until the cows come home...get outta heah!
begg knives are way too extra for my tastes... looked at this video *because* it's a lil more dialed back but, gosh. it's still a very noisy aesthetic. i don't often like inlays; committing to one material (or one material scales + one material liners) is usually prettier imo
Reate uses a LOT of permanent loctite on the Steelcraft series, but not on the regular reate knives. I think that's mostly because of the fact they use IKBS and not caged bearings.
I have an enormous knife collection including over a dozen Begg's. The Mini Bodega is the only knife I carry; anything else in my pocket just doesn't feel the same.
About disassembly, I have a Steelcraft Mini Bodega of my own and was able to disassemble it just fine. No loctite. Perhaps this is just one of those inconsistencies like with their blade grinds, which as you say don't tend to be great. For their own designs though, you shouldn't have trouble disassembling those, as they even provide you with extra hardware on your purchase. As for the pricing, yes Reate knives are more expensive, but while they're not flawless, I think they certainly bring justice to the many amazing knife design collaborations. The Todd Begg knives are also on the more expensive side as you can get Reate knives for $100 less. In comparison to the more value-oriented WE Knife model, you also get a titanium frame lock, instead of G10 and a steel liner lock. Another way to look at this is that if you were to have a US manufacturer build them, the price would be even higher, and the quality wouldn't necessarily be better either. Reate definitely has its place in the high end production market at a competitive pricepoint still.
Hey Nick, I was just wondering where you are from? Ive been trying to put a finger on your accent but cant place it aha, greetings from Montreal Canada!
That Dairy Queen analogy is the greatest thing I've heard all week. You actually face Greg Medford's workshop and light incense, not candles. I need a Field Marshall in my life. But I might settle for the mini Glimpse. I can always resell. It's cool to see WE and Reate putting out some wicked cool stuff despite their quirks. Like WE with the star screws I'm sure Reate will fix the grind issues and ditch the threadlocker eventually.
Mine has a very aggressive hollow grind and is super super thin behind the edge. I guess i got lucky. Haven't tried the pivot yet. Freespinning pivots are a pain.
Mine has a great hollow as well, and the tolerances are superb. Had it six months now and no movement or slippage at all. I usually prefer thumbstuds and a bigger choil but this knocked the MiniFreek out of my pocket.
One more try. I complained that the knife was bad for lefthanded people because, among other things, it only had right handed carry. Then you said something about it being available for $5 in eBay which was a complete non-sequitur, like you were commenting on someone else’s post. Hence my confusion. Your comment had zero to do with mine.
@@914Rocky you wrote: "$400 and only a right handed clip"... I was referring to the "$400" part of your comment; agreeing with you that the price is too high and that-- not being left handed, is not it's only problem.
Picked up one of these during blade show '18 and I've really been enjoying it! I didn't realize I was in the LBH club since I don't have much of an issue using the "finger choil". And it's definitely annoying that the pivot is threadlocked and I still haven't been able to break it free. Have any tips for loosening it up? Great video Nick! And great knife too😁
Nick you should really check out the Reate K1, they absolutely can grind a knife that cuts and slices very well. M390 with no fullers for oily cheese lol and it's hollow ground very well, mine measures about .020 behind the edge from the factory. Has superb inlays that fit seamlessly, begg style pocket clip with ceramic ball, it's not very heavy but it is something you'd probably consider huge lol since it's a 3.875" blade. Other.than the length of the knife, I believe you'd really enjoy it! It doesn't have a huge pocket pecker either
Since Massdrop has been offering some high quality knives made by WE Knives, I think we are starting to get a good idea of the real "Financial Mechanics" of knives coming out of China and how the Knife Community is being Ripped Off... !!
