I must've been dreaming when I watched us win two FA cups, one League Cup, and two European trophies (one being the Super Cup where we beat Real Madrid in '98) all in the late 90s and early 00s, as well as reaching a UCL semi-final and finishing 6th at worst in the league including finishing 2nd the year before Abramovich bough the club. We had World Cup winners lining up for us.
LFC and MUFC piled up success and trophies during a period when their owners were amongst the richest and most powerful. They also used their financial clout to circumvent rules and hoover up talent not just for their own teams, but to prevent others from accessing the same talent. It's all the same, people just frame "old wealth" as being inherently better than "new wealth". Football aristocracy indeed.
@samwize28 I'm not saying that Utd's success was ever purely down to ownership investment, though it's a turbulent history of at least a couple of instances where the club needed saving with investment. My overall point is that a lot of "old money" clubs have been propped up by inital large investments and have had decades to build and "buy" success despite not being the best supported at least initially (obviously not including Utd in that).

Most of the academy players back then weren't really good enough, if we're being brutally honest. Though part of that is that we never really gave them the chance to become good enough. Development requires playing time and invested effort and we invested neither into them.
Which is why it hurts so much more when we finally do see talents that manage to become good enough, who really want to play for us, and all we do in response is force them out to fund more mediocre foreign players that couldn't care less about the club.
I am starting to like Todd Boehly now. He saw all through the overhyped English dros and got rid of it. Go Todd!

It’s no coincidence that as soon as his son took over (who’s focused on all of that family’s sports businesses) they went from top 4 is good to challenging for the title. Liverpool fans will tell you that they’ve won in spite of FSG not because of them. Their hard limits on Liverpool being entirely self sustainable and them not invest their own money has hamstrung Liverpool compared to basically everyone else in the league who received £100s of millions from their owners over the same time.

The rumours I'm hearing is that Boehly and Eghbali hate each other and barely speak, with Clearlake also pushing for their own interests. An official complaint should be lodged with the Independent Football Regulator, to identify whether Boehly & Clearlake are fit and proper owners. It is all very well for allowing new organizations to purchase football clubs, but if it turns out that they have obviously lied about their intentions regarding their ownership, which is the case regarding Chelsea Football Club. These individuals are simply using the club as a trading platform for personal gain, and not a competing football club. Which is a betrayal of the basic ideology of the sport. What has happened, is nothing short of destruction of a once great club by asset stripping every element of it, while loading it with £1.2 billion of debt in just over two years. If this continues the club will not exist in five years time. A complaint, and an inquiry should be lodged immediately, before it is too late..

Of that list of academy players, not a single one of them is a world class player and almost all of them aren't elite premier league players. I get the emotional attachment but seriously, those players at their best will be average to slightly above average prem players. Sure, they're bringing in young, unproven talent but the likes of Lavia, Chukwuemeka, Fofana, Estêvão, and Páez have all been tipped as potential stars of the game.
