Lyrics:
It's like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder
How I keep from going under
It's like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder
How I keep from going under
Broken glass everywhere
People pissing on the stairs, you know they just don't care
I can't take the smell, can't take the noise
Got no money to move out, I guess, I got no choice
Rats in the front room, roaches in the back
Junkies in the alley with a baseball bat
I tried to get away, but I couldn't get far
Cause the man with the tow-truck repossessed my car
Don't push me
cause I'm close to the edge
I'm trying
not to lose my head
It's like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder
How I keep from going under
Standing on the front stoop, hangin out the window
Watching all the cars go by, roaring as the breezes blow
A crazy lady, livin in a bag
Eating out of garbage piles, used to be a fag-hag
Said, she danced the tango, skipped the light fandango
Was circon princess, seemed to lost her senses
Down at the peepshow, watching all the creeps
So she can tell the stories to the girls back home
She went to the city and got Social Security
She had to get a pimp, she couldn't make it on her own
Don't push me
cause I'm close to the edge
I'm trying
not to lose my head
It's like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder
How I keep from going under
It's like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder
How I keep from going under
My brothers doin' bad, stole my mothers t.v.
Says, she watches to much, is just not healthy
"All my children" in the daytime, "Dallas" at night
Can't even see the game or the Sugar Ray fight
The bill collectors, they ring my phone
And scare my wife, when I'm not home
Got a bum education, double-digit inflation
Can't take the train to the job, there's a strike at the station
Neon king kong standin' on my back
Can't stop to turn around, broke my sacroiliac
A midrange migraine, cancered membrane
Sometimes I think I'm going insane, I swear I might hijack a plane!
Don't push me
cause I'm close to the edge
I'm trying
not to lose my head
It's like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder
How I keep from going under
It's like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder
How I keep from going under
My son said, daddy, I don't wanna go to school
Cause the teacher's a jerk, he must think, I'm a fool
And all the kids smoke reefer, I think it'd be cheaper
If I just got a job, learned to be a street sweeper
I dance to the beat, shuffle my feet
Wear a shirt and tie and run with the creeps
Cause it's all about money, ain't a damn thing funny
You got to have a con in this land of milk and honey
They pushed that girl in front of the train
Took her to the doctor, sewed the arm on again
Stabbed that man right in his heart
Gave him a transplant for a brand new start
I can't walk through the park, cause it's crazy after the dark
Keep my hand on the gun, cause they got me on the run
I feel like an outlaw, broke my last glass jar
Hear them say you want some more, livin on a seesaw
Don't push me
cause I'm close to the edge
I'm trying
not to lose my head
It's like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder
How I keep from going under
It's like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder
How I keep from going under
It's like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder
How I keep from going under
It's like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder
How I keep from going under
A child is born, with no state of mind
Blind to the ways of mankind
God is smiling on you, but he's frowning too
Cause only God knows, what you go through
You grow in the ghetto, living second rate
And your eyes will sing a song of deep hate
The place, that you play and where you stay
Looks like one great big alley way
You'll admire all the number book takers
Thugs, pimps and pushers and the big money makers
Driving big cars, spending twenties and tens
And you wanna grow up to be just like them
Smugglers, scramblers, burglars, gamblers
Pickpockets, peddlers and even pan-handlers
You say I'm cool, I'm no fool
But then you wind up dropping out of high school
Now you're unemployed, all null 'n void
Walking 'round like you're pretty boy floyd
Turned stickup kid, look what you done did
Got send up for a eight year bid
Now your manhood is took and you're a may tag
Spend the next two years as an undercover fag
Being used and abused and served like hell
Till one day you was found hung dead in a cell
It was plain to see that your life was lost
You was cold and your body swung back and forth
But now your eyes sing the sad sad song
Of how you lived so fast and died so young

What? Definitely not, but ok.
It is completely and totally false. We are born with all kinds of tendencies. Some people are born to be criminals, some are born highly intelligent and curious. The extent to which we are tied to our genes is amazing!
This children being slates is a hope-filled lie. ALL of the evidence shows it to be entirely false.
The very first Hip-Hop song about the struggles of people living in poverty. This track stamped the genre as an art form. Sure, people from the ghetto knew what Hip-Hop was, but this song solidified the it globally.
Nowadays the message from hip hop is the reverse. Do sell drugs and buy gold jewellery. Guns, gangsters, pit bulls and fast women are the way to go
This track paved the road for hip hop. Respect it. Listen.

Hit the nail on the head. We should always be critical of all aspects.
@@scoe3000 That means it also needs to criticize people outside the community, too, since those are the people who always put political pressure on politicians to ignore communities like this, if not pass legislation to ghettoize it even further. That is what 60% of the 20th century was about.
It’s not really criticizing people in the community, it’s just pointing out how the poor conditions of the ghetto led them down a bad or difficult life path.
@@mistaglass7632 Right exactly, but it's also a warning to those in that position in this sense. Desperation can cause people to make foolish decisions when it comes to their life and soul. its definitely more impactful than i gave it credit for before i finally sat down and listened to it for real. before, all i knew was a line or two, now hearing the full, well, message, its so much more an expression of the dark, depressing struggle that minorities have had to face for decades in America than i was aware it was, not to mention the struggle they've had to face since basically forever.
the bit near the end was some of the darkest imagery you can evoke in a song, and his expression belies an insanity-inducing awareness of how fucked up it all is. but thats the underlying message behind it all: its a wonder how he keeps from going under...

From a hip-hop sister from the Bronx, NY: luv that, Eddie!!! ❤😮😂
History in a hip hop song quality 😊😊😊
If the genre hip-hop had a theme song, this would be it
Imagine making a record that transcends time and 4+ decades.. This jam still sounds as fresh and relevant today as it did when it first dropped.. The classics are just built different..
I agree it's a classic and historical, but I don't think the word "fresh" applies. Relevant in the subject matter? Yeah, but it's very obviously dated in sound and delivery.
Magnificent !
@@DaisyAnnabelle65😊👍 BROOKLYN 🐦
definitely not fresh🤣🤣🤣
Zero freshness sounds dated
Still one of the hardest tracks hip hop has ever had ✊🏿
THE HARDEST & RELEVANT
@James Anderson you got that right.
Wir sitzen gerade im Musikunterricht und ich trinke 4 Liter Schlagsahne
Konzentrier dich
Das intro und der sprechgesang für mich seit 40 jahren zu geil für diese welt.
I wonder how many people in 2020 are going to get the "message". This song was so ahead of it's time that even 38 years later it strikes a chord among people and resonates strongly with today's social issues. I wish more radio stations played it, if only to wake up those who have been ignorant of their surroundings.
WORD!!!
Systemic racism was so clearly explained in this song. No one can summarise it beautifully.
@@raghavgupta2399 Facts.
Amen.
This is one oppressive ass planet.
The first rap song to tell it how it is.
People don't realize that. This was the first rap that had meaning. The rest of the shit was party gibberish..
@@itguy5820 Not at all
Oh so you lived in the Bronx and heard all of the rhymes coming out of there at that time? You sure?
Rapper`s Delight came out 3 years before this. So that`s a big "no" to you and all the 148 morons who gave thumbs up. And I believe that THIS even wasn`t the first rapsong.
@@Randy1337 😐😐😐😐😐
The song was released one day before I was born. I was born into this era. Holds a special place to me
This song is so old but the message is still so strong stay up people
Still relevant today I agree
The hood gon always be the same.
This song really paints a picture, thats what we lost in this genre
Yea sadly we lost the writer of the song recently. Rest in Peace duke bootee
We still have story telling you just don’t want to look for it
We have great storytellers
You have to look for them tho
You have to do more than scratch the surface
Kendrick Lamar?
Do you know humble? It actually has 2 political messages even tho it sounds like brainless blabber at first
