      I was thinking the same. Sounded decent but admiting to some of those stances and decisions......well, they haven't aged well have they? Perhaps he should have left his own decision making influence to just his constituency. The UK is no better with him widening his scope. Denys the bleeding obvious. Bye-bye, Tory!

    Guy thinks it was right not to rewrite the definition of marriage. But was happy to vote against reality to call Rwanda safe against all logic. Tory div in a nutshell. Not a coherent thought or principle to be found.

      You misunderstood. He is saying society has re-defined what marriage means. I don't think society has a view on Rwanda. Nobody cares aside those middle class lefties who own their own property

    Isn’t it SUCH a coincidence that so many Tories are deciding NOW that this will be their last term? Also, how nice that he’s able to retire at 61 and spend time with his family? It’s a pity he didn’t think of his peers that are slightly older but don’t get that privilege. They too would love to spend time with their family but still need to work for a further six years.

    Translation of his pontifications on marriage:-"I want my bigotry encoded into law."
    Although I did notice, he didn't use the moral objection, he tried to make it about procreation. I'm straight and resolutely childless. Does that mean all my relationships have not been valid? I also know some very happy lgbtq+ families.

    I would have liked to see Matt challenge the contradiction between legislating something as different - isn't that exactly what the Tory government is doing with declaring Rwanda safe, just like Whittaker thought legalising gay marriage was?

      Matt is pro-Tory. Whatever narrative he is conveying, we need to take it with a pinch of salt. His take on the local elections on Friday was laughable. He was stating Labour were in trouble and Tories had done reasonably ok.

      That crossed my mind as well. It would have made for an interesting question. After all, marriage is whatever we decree it to be, whereas the safety of a country is factually based. The parallel was so obvious I wondered if Whittaker put it out there as a feed line. I was a little surprised Chorley didn't pick it up.

    I do think this is a great series.
    But it always amuses me that in All of these interviews the person in question is a perfect example of the ONE hard working, principled, honest, compassionate MP who never compromised their values. Given the public perception of the Tory party you must be doing a LOT of work to never interview any of the other kind.... Unless of course this is people writing their own epitaph and rose-coloured ink.

    I have not lived in the UK since leaving at the age of 16 but have always had an interest in politics. Listening to this guy was interesting and beforehand knew nothing about him but reading the comments I could not find any one saying anything positive about him. As he was probably a moderate I think the outlook for the Conservative party at the nest election is grim

    Not my sort of politician - I was a Corbynite and still am - but a very interesting, (at times very amusing), honest and open interview... interviewer and interviewee both. Good to get this sort of peek behind the scenes, nicely done. Thank you, gentlemen.       @@kincaidwolf5184 People vote for MPs based upon their own criteria and for their own reasons. The Tory party's policies are deplorable enough that I couldn't vote for them whoever they put up because of the whipping system. Voting based on the party is ENTIRELY valid.

      @tbrooke3016 i don't really see them being much different from Labour. Labour has been in power for nearly 30 years in Wales. The country isn't any better and arguably worse than England. I vote for my MP based on his skillset and connection to the area.

      @@kincaidwolf5184 that's an entirely valid way to vote too. I'm just saying for me it's important. People try to spin the Labour party and the Tories as the same and honestly I can sort of see where you're coming from but it's the lesser of two evils in my opinion. Labour is closer to the center than the Tories which is why they're doing a bit better in the polls and elections because the Tories wandered away chasing the Reform voters (forgetting that they're a relatively small percentage).
