I disagree …..LeAnne coming from being repeated rape by her grandfather. Her mother said she would have Bayou killed basically . She was 16 years old…and she never got any of his letters. What was it like for her to have to cut off the black side of herself. She was not happy.. If her mother did not come and get her she would have married Bayou. But it was her grandfather who told the mom about Bayou. I loved the ending….there was nothing to add to the guy realizing that both his parents were black and the old lady who gave him the letters was his grandmother. I loved this movie.

Technically, both Bayou and Leanne are mixed race. Bayou's dad Buster is Afro American and his mother Hattie Mae is Mulatto. Bayou's older half-brother Willie Earl is a Quadroon, his dad being a White Man. For Leanne's family, her grandfather is a Mulatto, her mother a Quadroon, and Leanne herself is a Octoroon.

Yes Leanne was like her mother because despite the fact that Leanne acted like she cared for Bayou yet she wasn't willing to give up her privilege to do so. Her mother convinced her to pass but Leanne certainly did enjoy the perks of passing. And Leanne mother was selfish for using her daughter to obtain wealth and privilege and Leanne was selfish for the things that she did pertaining to her seeing Bayou knowing that he could be hurt or killed. i.e. sending that airplane via Citsy to Bayou even after Citsy told Leanne that she was going to get Bayou killed. Allowing Citsy to repeatedly take the fall for her.

yes and no. we have to realize leanne was 16 in the beginning , it was easy for her to be manipulated by her mother . Now when she got older she could have tried harder . she was selfish just like her mother and only wanted things her way.

I’m late to this, I just watched this movie and to be honest I have not been his biggest fan. However I always respect his brilliance. I disagree with your take on lee- Ann’s could just leave. She couldn’t do anything people have to remember this time for black people she had plans to leave until her husband aka the next mayor and his brother was the sheriff to take note the family she was in was incredibly violent and Prejudiced she couldn’t leave under pain of death before the baby even came. There so much there to unpack and I hate that bayou was murdered even that was symbolic lee Ann mom set that in motion keep in mind the charge was he whistled a white woman the sheriffs wife. (The same thing happen in the TRUE story of Black Wall Street ) the whole small black part of town was getting ready to get annihilated bayou thinks he is getting out to save his mom but really the whole town Bayou is a hero a sacrificial lamb. He thought he was saving his mom, but it was even bigger than that and now she can’t leave. If she does anything she will be considered an N-word lover, that suffers penalty of death to this a lot of that movie is not just that simple you’re being too harsh on her in my opinion
