    What are the odds that RCS will actually be offered on iPhones sold outside the EU? Apple has already shown intent to segregate iOS features based on market location, with browser engine and appstore choice being limited to EU-only.
    As for Signal, the shot themselves in the foot when they discontinued the ability to handle SMS messages in addition to E2EE Signal messages. The number of F&F I know currently using Signal has fallen from 50% to nearly zero since that change.

    • @Firecul
      @Firecul 4 месяца назад +1

      I'm the same with signal. The whole point was to have an app that was secure when possible but allowed me to message other people without barriers. My job requires me contacting people, sms is universal (even if some don't like that) so without sms I'm not wasting my time with the app.

    • @jimscard
      @jimscard 4 месяца назад +1

      Pretty high. Apple also said they’ll be joining the GSMA and work with them to get E2EE added to the protocol. Remember, currently, it’s a Google proprietary feature - even Android users with other SMS clients (such as Samsung users) don’t get E2EE with RCS.

    I think the main reason Apple dragged their feet with RCS is Apple originally pitched iMessage to carriers to replace SMS and they shot Apple down. Then iMessage came out as an FU to the carriers (they were surprised Apple released it). And then Google came along and pitched their version of RCS and accepted Google.
    I think that ticked Apple off that they agreed to work with their competitor and not them.

    • @jaybutler
      @jaybutler 4 месяца назад

      Of course the carriers in the US shot Apple down in 2011. Carriers were still charging per message or selling messaging plans. Any messaging that eliminated that revenue stream would have been rejected 13 years ago.

    I don't think we need to bring Google back into the conversation. They did their part. They've even offered to help OEMs and Carriers. They still support the Universal Profile from the GSMA to this day. You can tell by the RCS messages that aren't E2EE. This is called out when someone uses their native messaging app like Samsung Messages for example. You get the typing indicators, high-quality pics and videos, texting over Wi-Fi, etc but no reactions and E2EE. The GSMA is the one that needs to upgrade its Universal Profile to support the "standard features" we expect. They need to be brought back into the conversation, not Google. Apple insists on being difficult. I can't stand it!!

    Green vs Blue bubbles is a bit of a laugh. It's a bit like men vs women toilet seat argument. Women want the toilet set down and think that men want it up, whereas men don't actually care if it's up or down. Apple users go off at the green bubble from Android users because it's not blue, whereas Android users don't give a rats except maybe to to ask, "How much did you pay for that piece of crap again?"

Big for me as I live off my disability and it's basically nothing so no unlimited plan I just use a low data plan and rely on my wifi as much as possible.... • @santosic
      @santosic 3 месяца назад +1

      The difference is, iMessage is Apple's closed, proprietary protocol that is closed to anyone that isn't in the Apple ecosystem. Google's Messages app, in turn, takes a standard open to any phone (even Apple ones, as shown by the fact that they can implement it if they wanted to) and improves upon it by adding their own end to end encryption to it if you're using their app. Just because you choose to use Google Messages for the end to end encryption with other users of the app doesn't mean you can't use RCS with anyone who *isn't* using Google Messages as their app. For example, I can have an RCS group chat with folks using Samsung or LG phones even when they're using their default RCS enabled texting apps, our conversations just aren't end to end encrypted since I'm the only one using Google Messages. You're not FORCED to use Google Messages to use RCS, it just works outside the box (especially nowadays as RCS is adopted more and more each week) whereas if you want iMessage, you HAVE to have an iDevice.

  • @ciaduck

    Here is my "tin foil hat" take:
    Apple doesn't actually want to support a different encryption standard, because they have a backdoor into their own. They get to spy on customers while claiming it's encrypted. Adopting a different standard, means they no longer have that door.
    The reality is probably much more banal and boring. Probably, they will do whatever the marketing team and c-suite tell them. They aren't going to have any engineer work on this, because they don't want to "spend the money" on the feature when they "already have the feature". The EU is right. The only way to make them move on this is to make it more costly financially to not support it. The big-wigs only see/speak in $$$.
