As a scientist, I really appreciate your approach, Glenn! My eyes (ears?) were recently opened when I bought an LTD EC-1000 with Fishman pickups and discovered that, while nice, the guitar didn't sound so much better than my cheap 2003 Epiphone LP Studio Goth. This realization led me down a path of tonal discovery that eventually brought me to your channel. I'm here to stay, so keep up the good work!
Now let me make a suggestion: I've enjoyed your blind audio tests, but I was wondering about you doing somewhat the opposite. Here are two options:
    1) Record the same Heavy Metal riff with 3-5 different humbuckers, but you EQ the tracks to make them sound EXACTLY THE SAME. Then you can talk about what you did to accomplish that and how long it took you.
    2) Record a Heavy Metal riff with a two very different sounding humbuckers, but move the amp mic for one of them to make it sound like the other humbucker. This might be a lot of work, but something tells me you could get it done pretty quickly.
As far as I'm concerned, if you can EQ or mic-move several pickups to sound the same, then the reasons for choosing which one you buy will come down to how quiet they are and how much they cost, NOT how "vintage" or "hot" they are, or what famous guitarist uses them.
I hope you find these ideas as fun as I do, and I also hope you see them as the valuable learning experiences they could be to further your Tonal BS cause.

I agree about mastering being the one part of the work flow that can be relatively easily automated via AI, since depending on your goal for the track, the various mastering styles/techniques are pretty standardized and relatively a finite number based on your goal for the track ie where you expect it to mostly be played. Mixing is still a finesse and nuanced thing because of the upteen million of options of how you want the individual tracks to sound cohesively throughout the entire track. That will be much tougher to fully automate via AI if ever.

I saw a Rig Rundown on Premier Guitar of Nuno and Pat Badger. Nuno’s tech said the following things. The few pedals that Nuno uses all run on batteries instead of AC Power for better tone. And the phaser pedal is the old MXR Phase 90 with the script logo and no LED because it gets a better tone. Now I will say that the script logo Phase 90 isn’t quite as sharp, isn’t quite as overt of an effect as the new ones. But that is NOT tone. And the batteries thing…I dunno. I have questions. We could add some maple cross bracing to give those highs some snap, mahogany side panels to enhance the mids, and a couple of basswood bits to make those lows really crush. That’s how tone works, right? lol You know I’m kidding, of course! But that’s the same thing with electric guitars, an electromagnetic audio device gets its tones from the wood? More tests! We need more blind tests! Keep up the good work. By the way, I could lend you my POD rack if you want to do some tests with that.

Best ways to record with those, and in terms of playing in the bedroom, is there any value in putting them through an FRFR speaker or better off just running them into the power amp in of your combo, so that your combo becomes a powered speaker, and all amps/effects/ir’s come from the pedal itself. Thanks for your work man!

    • @travisspaulding2222
      @travisspaulding2222 9 месяцев назад +1

If you're running it in the power amp of a combo with a normal guitar speaker, then you would want to turn the IRs off on the modeling unit. FRFR is for when you are using IRs, but a regular guitar speaker, you'd want to turn them off because you are already running through a speaker. I personally prefer FRFR because I get the variety of multiple IR options. When you run power amp and speaker, you're basically stuck with whatever speaker you're running through. However, it is personal preference.

Thank you so much for mentioning “entry level”recording consoles. I record and mix on an old Soundcraft Ghost with outboard gear and finally get the results I have chased for years. There’s many ways to get there but, a console is what was missing in my work flow. I’m just a guy in my basement so trying to afford a Trident 68 or something equivalent didn’t make sense. Once I dove into the used analog console market, I found that there are many great options out there that sound really good. Different stokes for different folks. I would love to see a video and your approach to the used console options under $2000 usd.
    Kindest regards,

Glenn, would be cool to see some comparisons between a tube amp that's just been turned on and producing sound and one that is given time to "properly warmed up". I would do that myself but unfortunetely do not have a reamp box to do it properly.

when you said "it took a mix i've been working on from this..." a midroll ad started with really basic hiphop/trap music (it was a soundcloud ad i think) and i wasn't looking at the video so i thought that was your mix and went "okay i didn't expect glenn to need to accept these kinds of mix jobs at this point in his career" lmao

I had radio Disney come through an amp before. I remembered a guitar world interview with gene Simmons. He said get a piece of aluminum foil, and plug your guitar into the jack through the foil. It worked! Haven't had to do this since the 90s with shitty vintage equipment. Hope this helps.🍻

    Hey Glenn,
your content the last 2 years has realy been invaluable to focus my money and effort on getting the tones I want out of my gear, and developing mixing skills, instead of dumping loads of cash I don't have on things that wouldn't actually help me get where I want.
I have an old Zoom 9150 DSP rack unit kicking around and would realy like to put it to use. Got it from my father, who didn't need it anymore and it's been sitting in a corner of my room for half a decade.
It's just a preamp, so I'd need an IR loader to take a DI out, or a power amp and cab. Any suggestions on those last two? Haven't found a lot of budget options for a power amp, and I'd be in the market for a 2x12. I play psychedelic/stoner, so I'd go for something not too harsh in the higher frequencies, but well rounded in the lower mids. Any recommendations?
Thanks a lot, keep up the amazing work!

I think, and I'm not 100% sure about this, the warm sound of an amp is based on something called total harmonic distortion or THD. I'm not entirely sure how it works but it is an electronic matter that can really alter how the power of an amp is develop and you can hear it more distinctly between transistors and vacuum tubes.

I started playing in the late 80's and gravitated to the scooped mids tone. When I started recording, I completely changed my approach to my amp settings and picking. Since then, my tone has mids, and I get the chunky tone from pick attack, not an EQ.
Everyone will eventually come to realize that guitars live in the midrange, unless everyone's intention is to may every record sound like ...And Justice For All, the album where bass is optional.

Hey Glenn speaking of blending amplifiers to get a good tone. For a while now I have been running two stacks because I'm the only guitarist in the band. I run the 5150 on one side and a Marshall DSL on the other side. I run vintage 30s (I know) with the 5150 and t12-75s with the Marshall. Then I run my guitar into an ABY splitter. I am using stereo effects so that I can run through both loops of both amps. In the front end I go straight into the 5150 and use a Revv G4 into the Marshall. Plus I run your metal effects in the front end. A lot of people have commented on how good it sounds. Let me tell you running two full stacks can get pretty fucking loud seriously. But yeah I totally agree that blending two different style amplifiers gives you a crushing tone! BTW The Marshall Code was a dogshit amplifier, I mean you can dial in a good sound or two It might take you a half hour. But those amps were pretty shitty I had one for a minute. Tube amps really do sound quite a bit better but some solid state stuff can do the job. Your channel and testing and information that you have given really made me open my eyes to a lot of things and I have learned a lot as far as getting a good tone. Thanks from the Bay Area the home of Thrash! 🤘🤘🤘👍

Ok sure. But there is mastering engineers who do master with out-board gear and not in the box, some offer both. Outboard master verses in the box is night and day. Have somene do that test for you! The last full length we did was mastered by Howie Weinberg on out board gear and sent both out board and in the box masters for us to compare too. There is a difference. We went with the outboard gear option.
Oh yeah we didnt have to drive to L.A. where he works. We sent shared wav. Files theough a file sharing system similar to drop box. The files can still be delivered digitally without a time consuming commute.
    It will.cost you though.

Tubes are funny. I run 6550’s in a FUCHS Viper. I inherited tube testing equipment from my dad so I like to see how well matched tubes are. I ordered a quad of Shu Guang 6650’s. I got the tubes for $38 each which is a good price in today’s world. The tubes were the most closely matched tubes I ever tested. They are very similar to the GE 6550 tubes and seem well built. I have had no problems and the amp has been run hard at times. The cheap tubes were better matched than NOS GE and Russian made Tung Sol.

Glenn, I would love to see how freq response graphs are created. Is an industry standard, calibrated mic needed? (due to some mics being darker than others etc so not having flat response over the full range). Is it possible to compare graphs from from 1 manufacturer to the next? IE if Celestion and Jenson tested an Eminence speaker, would all 3 companies get identical graphs? Cheers and FU

forget the Mackie boards. get the Soundcraft LX7 II. I have 2 Mackie 24x8x2 studio mixers and used them a bunch but now they have issues. So i replaced it with the Soundcraft. It sounds much better. much more responsive EQ. You do not have to move the knob much to get a big result. It has good headroom too. The one thing i loved about the Mackie is the headroom and the mix b section.

As far as your search for older/shitty Line 6 modulation gear here's what I came up with:
I just checked the manual for the Line 6 Spider III, (used to have one and found the manual by chance when cleaning up some crap) and as far as I can tell, the amps don't seem to have any cabinet emulation. I was even checking in some old forums and it turns out that the headphone jack (according to internet wisdom) can also work as "line out" so I think you could potentially run a cab through it?
Alternatively the speaker is fairly easy to disconnect and drop another one in and the 150W variant of the Spider III actually has 2 speakers
Even easier would be to get the Line 6 Spider III head which you can probably find for dirt cheap (quick search here in Portugal and found one for 150 euros/220 canadian dollars)
I've also found that the Spider IV has speaker outs/class 2 wiring if you can find those Spiders for cheaper than the III
I wouldn't even bother with the Spider original or Spider II to be fair.

Sorry to bother you, but I have a Peavey 6505+ 112 Combo, I changed the valves for soviet 6V6 and 12AX7 ones, it came with Ruby 6L6GC and 12AX7. The noise dissapeared and the tone is way better, but I want to also change the Sheffield 12'' speaker for a tone more suitable to 80's hard rock or even hair metal, what speaker would you recomend? I didn't have money to make the swap a few years ago when I changed the valves. I have a Charvel Model 5A with a Dimarzio Super Distortion, a DIY acrilic body with a J95 in the bridge and a Dimarzio Air Norton in the neck position, and also a Steinberger Spirit. They all sound great, I use the Steinberger more than the others, it is a great guitar and it weights mostly nothing compared to the other monsters. But when I plug them to the 6505+ they sound like I am hitting a metal bucket... But when I plug them to my Focusrite Scarllet 2i2 using Guitar Rig 5 they sound really good... I want to improve that amp... hope you can help me. Thank you! Rock on and cheers from Argentina!

I selected JJ tubes, but not for the sound: because JJ tubes are not made in Russia (impossible to get) or China (probably nothing wrong with those, though), and are readily available. question: does the speaker matter as much with Bass as it does with guitar? I always hear the joke that a bass player will drag a nice rig to a session only to be told to go direct into the board. is this really true? I do know that in the room different cabinets sound and feel a little different with bass (like deeper low frequencies with larger drivers, more high end if a horn tweeter is present etc.).

  • @Cyber6string

So, I’m really curious about a thing. People tend to be audio, visual or somatic learners (learners by feel). I wonder if some somatic learners mistake tone for what they feel from the guitar, or the amp and they’re just that highly tuned to the feel that they can’t separate it from the tone? In metal, that would be a very strong feeling as you can create a very big kick with just a palm mute.
