  • On Wednesday, I reviewed the Harley Benton Greenback 2X12. Some people became rather upset that I dared suggest that great results can be had, by using something OTHER than a Vintage 30. Buckle up, this one's gonna be FUN :). Get the Spectre Mega Bundle here: Includes Element Bass, ELE, Spenser's Course and so much more: spectreacademy.net/courses/sp...
It's only available for THREE days.
Edit: MIDI grooves aren’t included…. In got that part wrong!
    About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!

I work in live production. In the last five years there's been a shift. It's become quite the norm to see guitarists for national and especially international acts playing Harley Benton and other "cheap" guitars. The general consensus is, they play great and thee artists don't have to sweat them being lost, stolen or damaged.

I bought one to try it out and was quite surprised by how nice (and different) they sounded, specially because they cost half the price of a guitar speaker. I went straight from your video the other day to Thomann's website and bought the 412 greenback cab and it showed up today. For anyone curious or on the fence about ordering: 1. Shipping to USA was 160 bucks. It said 3 days. It took 3 days. 2. They shipped it directly in the Harley Benton box, which is super thin and they didn't double box it. No packaging inside other than styro corner bits and plastic wrap. Despite this the cab showed up in near perfect condition (a few surface scuffs on the top that might be able to be buffed off, I haven't tried.) 3. The cab sounds AWESOME. I been using a greenback IR through my captor lately so I kinda knew what I was getting into and this thing RIPS. It's good and thumpy without any rattles or anything like that. The construction seems tight, although I haven't opened it up to see how it looks on the inside yet. 4. It's a little smallish and doesn't come with casters just little rubber feeties. Even with shipping it was only 40 bucks more than a quad of Greenbacks cost from Sweetwater or whatever. Great deal. I may even wind up grabbing a creamback or CB/GB mixed cab if I wind up loving this thing.

Greenback is my favourite speaker, thanks for checking them out. My only gripe with them is their low wattage. How about a challenge, where you try to find a higher wattage equivalent? Personally I had to settle on Creamback M65, which also sounds awesome, but I wonder if there are any other options with a similar tone, yet higher wattage.
Thanks for the awesome content Glenn!

Celestion touted the Creambacks as the higher wattage "Greenbacks" but look for actual comparisons such as the ones made by Zilla Cabs and whatnot.

The V30 was also routed to be a higher wattage Greenback. Weird as hell, I know. But anyway, the wattage isn't an issue if you aren't cranking the amp. And in most recording and live situations, you don't need to. At least for metal.

    • @alrecks619
      @alrecks619 6 месяцев назад

i mean, the Greenbacks are essentially born to be a cheaper substitute to the Alnico speakers (especially Celestion Blue).

I love my greenbacks! Thankyou for proving they can work!
I would love to know how hard you were driving them as most metal recordists seem to slate the low power handling and early break up.

It seems like people perceive volume differences from a tube change as an actual shift in the tone. No, the amp is just louder or quieter. When the amp gets quieter it seems like the amp has more gain and more trebles and when the amp is louder has more low end and mid range. This is what's perceived in the room when your ear is 3'+ above the speaker. The microphone just picks up a volume difference... Once that volume difference is corrected for, the tonal shift is absolutely zero. In my experience anyways.
That said, I've had completely worn out power tubes that made my rectifier sound muddy as hell (I didn't even know they were worn out; the amp blew a fuse - i thought rectos were just muddy). When I put new ones in, the low end character absolutely came alive the amp was so much tighter. As tight as a recto can be anyways.
    Awesome videos Glenn, thank you!

I'm a subscriber and I think your videos are spot on. Your energy is addictive.
I also have a couple of small valve amps, a Tiny Terror and a marshall dsl 1 or something like that and a blackstar ht5h 🙄 and if I play them long enough they warm my room up a little which is nice in winter. I can't tell the difference between various valves or even those or a solid state amp which makes me feel like a failure in life sometimes.
Well done merry Christmas and a happy new year 👍👍👍

Glenn, I remember when you bought my drums and when you arrived to pick them up, I asked you what you do. You mentioned your RUclips channel but then you indicated to me that I likely would not appreciate it and you referenced that you worked in an auto factory and that is just how you are. I must have looked a little clean cut and not the kind of person that likely would not appreciate the channel. Well, here I am a few years later and I watch a lot of your stuff. I introduced your channel to a friend who is a guitar player and I know he watches a lot of your stuff as well. I am clean cut and he is a long haired rocker type and we have been friends for decades now. We do both share a fondness for people who tell the real story. Your channel production is very high quality and the content is always interesting and I just love all of the feedback on feedback that happens. It is interesting how one's talent overrides the f-bombs, the long hair and becomes pure appreciation of skill and knowledge. Merry Fucking Christmas Glenn! Keep up the fantastic quantity and quality and by the way, your guitar playing looks to be improving a lot to top it all off.

Gotta agree with Frickenstein on this one, I quite often get compliments on how good my 5150iii through my Harley B. vertical sounds. And yes, it does sound beastly. I only took the logo off the front because it looks more like it really belongs on the side of a 1983 Olds Ninety Eight than an amp cab. But aside from that, for $237.00 as opposed to a grand for a Mesa, I'm one very satisfied customer. Thank you Thoman!! And btw Nigel's fucking hilarious.

Makes you wonder what even are these critics of Glenn listening over? What monitors and room are they listening over? Are they achieving tones better than Glenn? Probably just talking out their behinds, right? And watching YT over their crappy phone or laptop speakers?
Cause I'm listening in a fully treated room, with properly placed studio monitors with ribbon tweeters. Glenn's tones, to me, are great. Balanced, not harsh, not overly processed. Thick but pretty defined.

All I have heard Glen say for YEARS is this, "you don't NEED an over priced guitar to play good/sound good, if you think you do, you're an idiot"
Never did I once hear him say, "don't enjoy the fruits of your labor"
He is simply trying to teach/show people that you can get great sounds with out spending a million damn dollars.....
The fact people get mad about this hurts my brain because I simply can NOT understand why people are like this.
Thanks for showing me shit that does the job that I can afford Glen.
For YEARS now you have given me good and often, great advice.
Your discord is full of people who know shit that I need to know and they have always helped me.
You provide a service that Gibson would charge for.
Never stop being the grump Canadian who gives a shit, alright? We like ya this way sir

As an old school MetalHead, I tended to drift from ESP - to Jackson - to B.C. Rich - now I've moved on to Schecter loaded with Seymour Duncans.... obviously, each guitar equipped with it's own unique personality & awesome tone. But in recent years, I've realized I've gotten older and it's getting Harder & Harder to haul around those huge cabinets and Giant PedalBoards... so decided to finally downsize my Lumbering Tower of Power of Full Marshall Stacks and swapped them out for the BOSS Katana 212 (loaded with two Eminence 200watt Legends) and also replaced a WAY over-encumbered, 85lbs PedalBoard for the New BOSS ME-90!!
I'm just curious... but would this trade-off be considered a Modernized Upgrade ... or would it be considered Sacrilege??

I agree slightly with the opening message. The cab DOES matter, as the woods react differently to the speakers alone with the spec of standard size or oversized size. But speakers are the main main tool for a different tonality.

    Hey Glen
I want to ask about what type of speakers I should get for my 4x12. I've been eyeing neo v types, and the mojotones neo speakers. (I'm leaning more towards the v type but I'm just waiting on your review for the mojotones speakers however they sound "almost" the same from different people using it in a crunch setting.) Though my real question is if I buy speakers that sound very dark like either of the two, would I still be able to put another dark speaker in it like the hesu demon speakers without it sounding very muddy? or should I get a speaker that sounds high like the celestion g12 anniversary speaker? So the sound has a balance of lows and highs. I've been overthinking and just wondering about my idea.

Just a thought on a video (or even a series), based on the question about going to engineering school at around the 4:30 mark here. What about doing a comparison to how you can buy your own gear, setup a small room or garage to record in including acoustic treatments, mics, cables, plexi to reflect sound correctly so stuff doesn't bleed as bad, etc, small board or computer, interfaces, decent outboard gear and how to get that to sound decent (or even good!). Add that to your Spectre classes (and/or other online alternatives) and see what that costs compared to going to engineering school. Could be eye opening that you can probably get your classes, buy a good starting base of gear and start your own small studio for less than the cost of going somewhere to get a worthless certificate. Heck, even for us hacks that don't want to do this for a living and just want to have some fun recording our own stuff or for some friends, could probably get a lot out of that. Cheers!

My favorite guitar sound I have ever had and have not been able to reproduce it. That does not mean it cannot be done, I just haven’t been able to reproduce it with plug-ins, but maybe I haven’t found the sweet spot. My favorite rig was from my performing and recording in Jersey in the late 80’s. A 1970 AMPEG V4B with Grove tubes, an ADA MP1, a Digitech 255 XL, stereo thru a 4 x 12 1970 Marshall cab with 25 watt Green Backs and a 4 x 12 HARTKE aluminum cone cab. Man I miss that rig.

Glenn thanks for a stellar 2023 of great videos which usually make me smile and are also very informative.
2023 has been a terrible year for me - i spent the first 6 months recovering from CV19 complications which nearly claimed me late 2022. But onwards and upwards into 2024, positive thoughts and all that.
If i could ? i'd jump on that $197 bundle, but i;m on Govt benefits and relying on charities for food etc.
no i'm not after anything - i'm fine, please really I'm fine and i'll buy sh!t when i have the money - and i wish you, your family and all the Spectre community a safe and happy holiday break and of course a very merry new year. cheers from NZ
