Hey Brick. I was bullied in school a lot. It made me feel so worthless and its a feeling I've carried for a lot of my life, not intentionally just a result of mental scaring i guess. Anyway now that I've been an adult for quite some time, almost 40. I've had a chance to see people who were bullies in school, grow into kind, caring adults. I think its important to remember too, that a lot of problem children are born into problem environments. The ones who weren't, were just children at the time who were unlikely to be aware of the full extent their bullying was doing, just for brownie points with their friends. Bulling is horrible and it can destroy young children's minds and social abilities, it should be taken much more seriously by a lot of schools. But maybe we shouldn't hold anything against them as they were just children with lots to learn. So glad to know you went on to overcome it, and now enjoy your success 😃

There absolutely is. Bedroom tone is not recording tone which in turn is not live tone. All three are very different from one another! Although recording tone and live tone are definitely closer to each other; bedroom tone is a total outlier and not to be trusted for any other purposes!

I’m in into the same old school metal like you are, maiden is my favorite band and I want to bring that old thrash metal sound back and you really inspire me to do so, and you reminded me that metal isn’t supposed to be perfect….. and that’s the freaking point, metal should be the exact opposite of what’s on the radio and the top ten charts, and I can tell you definitely want a band like that in your studio again. Dear Glenn,
I always enjoy your show. The reviews, comments and your insights/ recording experience. I’ve been playing the guitar for over 35 years. And although I’m not a ‘metal’ player (although I’m a big iron maiden fan) I still learn a lot!
When I was younger till up to a few years ago I went by the whole ‘name recognition’ even if I never played or used that particular guitar/ amp. Now, when people ask the obvious questions I tell them:
“If it feels good, is comfortable and sounds good to you; it is good. Who really cares what the name says. Yes, there’s certain sounds and styles I gravitate towards but that’s what I like. It may not be what you like so it’s ok to find your own voice. And the price tag or name recognition has nothing to do with that voice!”
The only thing I’d like to see more of in your reviews of guitars is hearing the clean, undistorted sound of the guitar. I think it shows the true sound of the guitar even if some don’t think its ‘metal’ LOL!
    Thanks Glenn!

I had started on a guitar that should never have been made and wanted to upgrade to a decent enough "beginners" instrument. One that I could drag it around with me from now on, even if I upgrade again at some point. I love this thing. It has exceeded expectations and constantly inspires me to pick the thing up and practice. It has become a jack of all trades in my studio and accidentally dinging it does not induce a heart attack as it is an inexpensive bit of kit.

+1 for a video on creating tone for the mix. I think professionals forget that what is obvious to them is not obvious to everyone else. To most people, it's "obvious" that you would always want to have the best tone you can. It's the "garbage in/garbage out" concept. To put a "bad" tone into a mix seems counterintuitive.

One thing that helped a lot was music. I could be through hell at school, but listening to full albums and imagining stories from the lyrics helped to deal with emotions. I still do it sometimes.
Ah, and a video about "live tone vs. mix-oriented tone" would be cool as well, I know the idea of it, but most likely some subtle things about tweaking for studio are new concepts for me (and a lot of people) and it can help a lot.

As for cheap import instruments and not wanting to be seen with one - I've commented on the subject several times but now I can offer a fresh personal perspective. I've just bought a made in Indonesia Sterling Ray SUB 5 and I'm very pleased with it. The fretwork is very good, the overall construction feels solid and that Stingray tone (the Sterling Ray being the cheaper version of the Stingray) is right there. Yes, the finish on the neck feels cheap, the nut is a crude piece of plastic (gonna replace it some time in the future) but overall, it's a good bass with some really nice sound. I bought it as a backup for my beloved Alembic Essence 5 but I'm so satisfied with it I'm gonna gig the fuck out of that thing, zero fucks given. I'm not gonna be worried someone steals or damages it while it's been an issue for me with the Alembic. And if someone has a problem it's not a "real" Musicman bass, it's their problem, not mine. Me, I'm happy with the SUB.

Your comment about changing the sound of your guitar when in a recording situation was right on. I have been in the studio with players who are really reluctant to change their amp or guitar settings because that's "their sound". It may be "their sound" but it isn't working in "our" mix or for the overall tone of the song. That's when you start getting the "turn me up" guys who don't understand that it's "their tone" that is burying the guitar in the mix. What sounds great to your ears when you are playing alone and "creating your sound" sounds like dog sh*t in a recording mix. These players have the same problem in a live situation blaming bad acoustics of the room for killing their sound. It's a given that the place you are playing in has horrible acoustics but it's the players job to use their amps EQ or pedals to make their instruments and amps adapt to the situation. Don't blame the room, the engineer, the microphone, the mix or your bass players fugly girlfriend. Be prepared to make changes to "your sound" on the spot.

I totally agree about practice vs. mix tones. The tones I'm using in my latest project sound like absolute shit when isolated (like surprisingly bad, no way I'd ever use them for solo practice), but in the full mix with 2 guitars in stereo it sounds thick and full and heavy. Hell, I'm pretty sure you're the one who drilled this concept into my head, Glenn. But yeah, I encourage any doubters to try it themselves.

I'd love to see your take on bullying. I think it could be really helpful. I'm 57 now, and still have nightmares about my high school experiences. I was fat and nerdy and had the social skills of a dead rat, and was constantly harassed from middle school through my freshman year of high school. I hung out in the German room because they had a TRS-80 computer and all my D&D friends were taking German too (except for Kent, who took French but we didn't hold that against him). Yes, I was a walking cringefest of reasons to get bullied and picked on.
In my sophomore year, I stopped being the target. Something happened over the summer that I still don't quite understand, but in 10th grade I just wasn't putting up with anyone's bullshit. Still hanging out in literally the least cool room at school, with literally the most uncool people imaginable. It just stopped somehow.
There was no theme music Rocky Balboa Karate Kid moment of breakthrough and revelation. I didn't stand up to the bullies. I didn't fight my way to glory and win the respect of anyone. I just had a different attitude and as if by magic, the bullies ignored me and picked on other kids. I'd like to say I then became the hero and protected the other victims, but that wasn't what happened.
I'm still pretty fucked up by it all, though. Parents, school faculty, adults in general have the wrong fucking idea. It does not build character. It does not make you stronger. It is not "boys will be boys".
It's monumentally fucked up and should not be tolerated, anywhere, by any person with an ounce of compassion. It ruins peoples' lives and takes the social outcasts and pushes them even farther away from having a normal life.

Glenn, your guitar playing improvements are an inspiration! I've started trying to retrain my picking hand to the closed fist method. It has not been easy to retrain my hand, but I'm now making it a habit to practice scale running and that picking technique while watching your videos. It's been helping a lot and I can definitely tell that my accuracy is getting better. Once I get that down, I'll be attempting the scale method. Thank you!

Bullying is something that can make or break someone's character.
I think there is something interesting in Metal kids almost choosing to accept the grief they're gonna take for what they listen to, what they wear and style their hair.
I think this choice to wear your heart on your sleave knowing your going to be a pariah or target is the reason so many metal heads can deal with abuse with a smile on their face.

Two things, I respect the whole getting bullied thing from HS. I’m well past that in my life pushing 50 and recalling that myself. I think that would be awesome to see you do for kids. It might help a few push through some shit in their lives. Also, I would love to see you do a contrast between live vs mix set-ups. I don’t do much recording but plenty of live shows. This would be a great contrast to see how to achieve “the same” sound in the two different medium. Thanks!

For the person having problems with a bassy Katana - try doing a factory reset (very easy, takes a few seconds) to make sure it's not holding on to an old EQ setting or something, and make sure to connect it to your computer and open up Boss Tone Studio so you can access all of the EQ options (and all of the extra effects and controls).
Have never had any issue with any of Katanas being too bassy. If anything, have to work to tame the high end sometimes.

thumbs up for new intros! FU old intro ;P
As for the tuning down a few cents bit: It really depends on the sound you're going for. As Glenn said, if you want a heavy, darker sound that "chugs", go for a few cents lower.
But as long as all strings are off by the same amount you can set it to whatever you want, depending on how you want it to sound.
I find that a few cents higher makes for a happier, more quirky sound. And other offsets have their qualities too.

I do notice this too in artists today. There are too many who are following set rules in making perfect music rather than breaking and bending the rules in recording settings, pretty much there’s less creativity. It’s the impurities that made the music back then sound good. Huge fan from Ireland. Love your work.👍

Oh man, a bullying video would be so helpful to so many Glenn. I mean, look at your audience.
Having grown up with a facial birth defect and all the shit that went and still goes with it I know how much an encouraging word can help. I was so lucky I had big friends, supportive parents and a wicked sense of humor. Honestly, it never goes away even when I haven’t had a comment in months. Every time I go somewhere I expect it. It’s a big reason (that and facial pain) I have gotten into music. It’s my outlet. But a lot of kids and adults don’t have one. I can say this Glenn, with your following you’ll save a life if you do it. I guarantee it.

Glen, I'm basically a baby guitarist at this point, I'm living in the BIAS FX 2 amp sim world right now, and there are tons of great tones in there with infinite potential to experiment and waste hundreds of hours of my life tweaking tones I can't tell if they are shit or not but.... being as I'm a beginner to tones what I really wish for is to come across some content that no bullshit walks newcomers through the entire guitar signal chain - from the output jack, through common fx types, amps, cabs, speakers, and also with some clarification about what's possible in physical-gear-land vs sim-land. Because, ultimately, since I believe that I'm total ass at guitar, my biggest priority is to keep practicing, not messing with tones. However, I recognize that I need to comprehend the signal chain for my practice efforts to ever turn into something that sounds good enough for someone to want to listen to one day.
One of my biggest frustrations about educational content in this realm is the use of extremely ambiguous and subjective terminology like "bright" and "warm", etc... I have a very engineering-centric mindset, so I would love for educators to just use more precise language with as much video aid as possible.
For example, I wanna see an oscilloscope and live EQ curve on the screen during any and every "tone" discussion, otherwise to me the content is just a subjective pissing contest between people's ears... and while there is value in that because ultimately sound is generated to be consumed by people, for the person that is making these sounds and putting them all together in a mix, this wishy-washy language is just frustrating to cut through.
Probably the greatest example of the kind of videos I find most helpful are almost anything by ruclips.net/user/DanWorrall, but he doesn't discuss stuff like guitar tones, just more general concepts, so I really wish I could come across something like his stuff but more guitar-signal-chain-and-tone-centric. I've been really gaining a lot of high-level general knowledge throughout your videos and I love your energy and content, so maybe this is something you could help with, or maybe just point us in the direction of someone who already has this ready for us?
Anyway, thanks for all you do Glenn, and fuck you from swamp-ass-Florida!
