Quality work should not depend on the price of repairs.
And the price of work should not depend on repairs necessary.
All these costs should be amortized through out the average normal pricing of the life time of the vehicle.

I watch the millennial farmer. He is north of me here in Minnesota. It's a very wet late planting season and to make things worse he lost his equipment barn in a bad storm His equipment issues are crazy. Just like yours, must be the year for it. I am a retired engineer that helped run a major food plant, the electronics in tractors are as complicated as complete food plants, only they move . Best wishes hope things get fixed. Off to put a new Radiator in my MG A, parallel play at a small scale. Have a great holiday and don't work too hard, thank you for all you do I very much enjoy it.

But it comes at a cost, if backup equipment it isn't making money it is costing you money. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Good luck Chris, hope it is something minor and fixed soon. Thanks for sharing.

In trucking we used to say you can pay the bank or the mechanic. Do you have a custom radiator shop in your area to build you new radiator? I had that done for my Western Star truck. They build steel tanks and a copper core and It was half the cost of a shitty OEM that was aluminum and had plastic tanks.

I replaced mine with a solid copper radiator. This was around 2009 and it cost $5K. Those folded styles always clog up and don't cool as well as a regular radiator. P.s. The shop that put my brand-new radiator in poked a hole in it, installing it LOL.

I've made that mistake here in California as well. Plain water and no thermostat meets my heating and cooling needs. But it takes close to 50% coolant to meet the (easily forgotten) de-rusting needs. And now that the coolant sellers have discovered they can charge just about as much for 50/50 premix, a LOT of people aren't running enough rust preventative.

With soy base electrical wires, I wonder if you don't have a mouse issue? They chewed up my engine wires, stripping them in spots causing all sorts of electrical issues. Finally started using red pepper powder on the wires about twice a month along with some strategically placed mouse poison cubes in and near all my electrical stuff. Took care of the issue pretty quickly too! I could tell when the little buggers were chewing on the cubes

Go to the Tarsands of Alberta, Cat brand dozers go to RB Auction, 35-40K Hrs. average, Komatsu, 18-20K Hrs, same maintenance, and the Komatsu sell for scrap prices, the Cat go for used parts, what does that tell you.

While you were explaining the details and the frustration with the dozer radiator repairs, I was just wondering if it would be possible to do away with the folded radiator system and replace it all with a conventional copper radiator unit. I have no idea what the cost of that would be but it seems like it would greatly reduce the complexity of the folded system and would provide more efficient coolant circulation. A conventional radiator would probably be less expensive to repair in the future. Just a suggestion! I hope you can get some direction soon on parts and repairs and find some options that will be much less costly. Have a great weekend!

I have a truck that would only run 100 miles after being in the shop, it had started with lasting a week or so after they would clear the codes and it got down to only 100 miles before reseting was required, I finaly got it to a different shop and they pulled all the rubber lines off the DPF box and replaced them and cleaned the differnal pressure tubes to the DPF and it was fine for a long time, the rubber lines had some hair line cracks causing the problem.

So much for fixing up old equipment like Diesel Creek does. It may get some youtube views, but it's not going to last or be as productive being put through the paces on real work day after day.
There's a reason it was parked. The repair, downtime, productivity costs are why big construction companies sell the old and buy new every few years, unless the equipment is used sparingly.

Hate to say it but when I see all the rust and crap in the radiator I can't help but think the following. Your dozer I believe has a 333 or 3306 engine in it. They have wet liners in them. I worked for a cat dealer back in the 70's - 80's and with this amount of rust it would build up at the bottom of the cylinder liners and can cause poor engine cooling, leaking cylinder liner leaks and engine failures.

G'day Chris. Years ago I had a '67 HR Holden and was having trouble with it running hot, this was in the days when we didn't put "anti-freeze"(green coolant) in our radiators in Australia. I flushed the radiator and ripped out the thermostat on the water pump and that fixed it for a while but then the problem came back. I then pulled the "Welsh Plugs" out of the engine and found that the water jacket of the engine was full of scale that had flaked off the water jacket and filled it up to just below the level of the "Welsh Plugs". To fix it I had to strip the engine and clean out the water jacket.
I suggest that if you are going to replace the top and bottom tanks of the radiator that you at least take a look at the engine as it is apparent that the maintenance of the D6 was sadly lacking by its previous owner. Then decide if it is a problem whether it is worth pulling down the engine, time out of service/cost of getting the job done and then have the uncertainty of other problems with the D6 due to the lack of maintenance of the previous owner or buying a reconditioned engine for the D6.

  • @markpashia7067
    @markpashia7067 2 года назад +6

It took years of neglect to let that radiator get that bad. Once you get it right it will never be that again. Trouble with used is you are always buying someone else's problem child. Don't cut corners, do the bottom can as well or just a whole new one of a different style. There has to be a way. Prices for having machines on a job may have to go up to overcome the breakdowns. Customers always end up paying for the equipment or you will be out of business in no time. Good luck and don't let it get you down. Forced vacation right after a voluntary one is tough but you have been there before and you can do it again. PS I am not talking all on one customer but the average has to be part of the year or why do it. Every hour on every machine has to be accounted for in the end.

I am kind of surprised that Chris did not simply have a new radiator built that would fit in the opening without connecting to all the passages. The coolant appears to enter and leave the engine via hoses, although I don't know if coolant has to go somewhere else, as well. But the cooling system is toast, at least it looks that way. Probably need to flush out the engine, too.

I live in an old house with a furnace made in the mid 60's. (yes, I have CO detectors) Sure I pay more for gas than a high efficiency furnace BUT that high efficiency furnace needs a $1500 repair every year or two. The same hold true with modern machinery BUT with old equipment it's usually pretty easy to diagnose and repair. (right to repair comes in here) Old pre-computer farm equipment sells at a premium for those very reasons.

I've no doubt it's gonna definitely going to be interesting.
Of course it sucks when ya gotta take so much time fixing misbehaving equipment.
Chris never let's us down tho.
He'll get everything back in service.

Oooooo, Noooooo. The perfect storm. Sigh. You can load-up the dogs, go get a giant order of French fries so you and the dogs can feast. They’ll love you for a special treat. Maybe pack-up and go do something to get your mind occupied with something you enjoy. Praying for you my friend. God bless.

I feel the pain. 3 P/UPs from the 80s, 1 late 90s and a 2011 SUV all with something wrong.

Unless you're keeping "originality" in an old rig - I'd have taken the saving to not have genuine cores installed and get a nice series of readily-available radiators off a truck or big car and stack them for the cooling air flow you need. You could even have them with an electric fan per unit and let them decide themslves when to kick in & an override switch for ON or OFF. You have the space to play with for sure. Each one could be coupled in parallel top and bottom to maintain the "even heat distribution" & you sure could play with the configuration and stacking infront or ontop.... that override switch could run reverse so you can BLOW the dust away if you're running into wind on dry surfaces. So much choice.

The guys at C&C Equipment just worked on the same radiator from an Ex Military dozer maybe they can help out? I would say if things get critical air con condensers may be a get out of jail card (copper tubed type) and a lot of size choices to. I did this with a crane engine in the 70's and it was still good 15 years later!

For dealing with brush etc would an attachment that is basically a mirror or your thumb not work better than the bucket?

They do make a grapple for the excavator but hauling extra attachments and taking time to swap them around has to be taken into account also. Sometimes simple and quick is the best setup.
