Neither my gf nor I had read the books. When this episode aired, she had a very Magy-like reaction (with a lot more hiding behind pillows though). I just watched with wide eyes and mouth open, thinking, "This is crazy but it's brilliant!" I love storytelling, including all the ups and downs, and the severe, unexpected turn in this episode made me even more of a fan than I already was. It didn't crush my soul because, although I was sad to see the characters go, it was artistically an amazing choice and I loved it. Definitely one of my favorite episodes of the series.
@@johnplaysgames3120 Find a way to read the scene in the book. Even the writing of it was amazing. "10 angry ravens raked at her face..." It was in Catlyn's POV, and she lost her mind and scratched up her face right before she FELT the blade at her throat,,and the chapter, ended on that cliffhanger. We didn't get confirmation that she was actually CUT in the throat until several chapters later, through dialogue, rumors, and a really awesome dream-turned-warging scene. There's also something super duper fuggin awesome that follows this specific storyline, and they didnt. Put it. In. The show. I wanted to punch them. It would have been so badass. And satisfying, after this scene.
I can’t be the only exception though? Despite being a history buff and know a lot of real life situation in history where scenes of “red wedding” actually happened, my friends thought I would enjoy Game of Thrones, but in reality, I couldn’t even root for Robb, his father’s death was normal, there are many instances what Ned did, did actually happened in RL, like 80% got beheaded or burned or killed, 10% got tortured and 10% rot in jail until died of diseases or old age. What Robb was doing was extremely foolish, how many Kings were killed by a clan? In game of thrones there was only 2 players. Based how the series was going until season 5, I stopped, it was clear to me who will be the last two to grab the title, but both of them are not the players, wasn’t interested in both of them. People could say a lot of people were playing the game but, honestly, most of them are tools or trading cards, have power, but not playing the game, if you realised, the one player that was on defensive was removed before the second player realise he was on offensive. So it was a game that nobody played against each other, anyone who have both of the players would win the game, but no one gave a shit.
@@MagicMagy Were you interested of GOT before and late in watching it due to your age? I wonder at your age do you appreciate the entertainment value or intrigue with this series? After all GOT is a global phenomenon compared to some other American shows.
14:17 This song is the Rains of Castamere. This is the reason why Catelyn was worried, because it's the song of House Lannister. You might heard this song after the Battle Of Blackwater episode during the credits. Furthermore, when that song was played it signals the Frey and Bolton to turned on the Starks and Tully army outside the Twins.

Catelyn was always smart and understood the political nuances of _Game_ of _Thrones_ ...I wasn't surprised that she knew something was wrong before it happened. It's too bad that Ned Stark didn't listen to his wife or he would have still be alive.
@@luminatrixfanfiction Cat also made some serious errors, like arresting Tyrion, which was cause enough for Jaime to lance Ned and kill his guard, and arrest him......and we all know how that ended up.
Finally got to the episode that changed everything. The Red Wedding. This does the book justice. The horror just keeps going and going. I had to watch this episode with my friends because I already knew what was coming. This actually made one of my friends break his phone (on accident). He was more upset about this episode than his phone. This feeling you have....it stays with you for almost the entire series and just makes you hate the Lannisters more and more you think about it.
@starlord the best guardian The thing is in the book Rob Stark married a Lannister Cousin. She was "kidnapped" moments before the wedding. These changes from the book made the show interesting for those who read the book. The killing of the pregnant wife was a kick in the gut for us book readers. After this we waited for Lady Stoneheart but she never showed. I am happy that they did the book justice, but it was tough. I cried and I knew it was coming.
@@TheKukulkan I remember when I read the books I somewhat suspected him meeting this cousin was all a setup by the Lannisters to put a rift between the Starks and Freys. I don't think they knew it'd pay off this well though. In the show that's all pretty neatly avoided though.
@@TheKukulkan "The thing is in the book Rob Stark married a Lannister Cousin." Jeyne Westerling is not a Lannister cousin "She was "kidnapped" moments before the wedding." She wasn't there at all, Robb wanted her to stay at Riverrun with the Blackfish
Even though it made us all feel like shit after, this has to be the most brilliant episode in television history. Literally caught the whole audience by surprise.
@@Mycernius That was your silly mistake. One should never read the books. 😃 But in all seriousness. For me it's better to read the books afterwards, to fill in the details missed by the show. I'm visual so books do nothing for me other than provide rote information. I can't get excited or emotional or even visualize the action from a book.
Well, now you know to expect it. George RR Martin who wrote the books said in an interview "You know you watch something like Spiderman and you see him backed up in a corner against 20 thugs and he beats them all up with ease. You are never scared for him, but in Game Of Thrones no matter if you are the main character or not if its unrealistic for you to survive then you wont."
Of course, that's all utter nonsense, because who lives or dies has nothing to do with realism and everything with what GRRM wants to happen. If realism was an issue, Tywin Lannister would have thanked the Freys, then have them hung, drawn and quartered and sent their bits and pieces to all the seven kingdoms as an illustration as to what happens to people who break their oath of fealty. You don't reward people who put the axe to the foundations of the social compact and scoff at the very foundation of your own agency and power. The "inspirations" GRRM has cited in the past for the Red Wedding have precious little in common - both with each other and the Red Wedding - other than people being surprisingly killed.
@@victormanteca7395 Oh my sweet summer child. You still believe that they introduced wholly original ideas. They may have rushed the ending, but I can guarantee you that what the narrative was based on GRRM's notes. Of course, given the "speed" at which he progresses, he has every opportunity to disavow his own words and change his concept in order to distance himself from the outcry. That is, if he ever bothers to finish the stuff instead of raking in HBO cash for prequels.
@@ohauss George RR Martin has repeatedly changed his story outline. I wouldn't put it out of question that he changed it again after seeing the backlash to the last season. Could be a reason for why it takes him so long to get winds out.
Magy: "I'm so done with Game of Thrones!" Me: "Don't worry Magy...the North remembers!" Without a doubt, one of the most heartbreaking episodes of the entire series. I'm a grown man and literally had the same reaction as you when it first aired.
@@ben1ben2ben1ow? Jon Snow and Sansa literally avenged one half of the Red Wedding by ending the Boltons, and Arya avenged the other half by killing the Freys. The third half was avenged by Tyrion when he murdered his own father. How was "The North Remembers" butchered? It may not be as good as it was in the books, where grand conspiracies are coming, but it was still good
Fun fact from one of the biggest GoT fans ever: This was my introduction to the series. First episode I watched. I had a friend that had read the books and thought this would happen in episode 10, so he said it would be fine for me to watch with them and get a feel for the series. I watched this the morning after it aired and immediately bought all of the books and began watching the series. He apologized profusely, but having this bandaid ripped off before I had a chance to love Robb was such a blessing.
Omg, I had a similar experience. I saw a gifset of the red wedding deaths in Tumblr and I thought, "this looks very intense and impressive, I'll start watching" so I knew all along looool. I usually don't mind being spoiled but I kinda regret it being this one thing.
To this day i still remember reading this scene, about 20 years ago when this book came out. I got to the scene, i read it and turned the page to the next chapter and i just sat there for a solid 30 minutes thinking about what i just read. I put the book down and i didnt finish reading it for almost a year. I know your reaction well, the TV series really did this scene justice, even with the changes they made.
I remember reading this in the books before Season 3 aired, and was heart broken. But now I knew to expect my favorite characters to get whacked, after they killed Robert and Ned off. I also remember a Dave and Dan interview where this was the episode they were looking forward to filming and showing the most. Game of Thrones, never a happy ending.
A trivia about the Red Wedding. Everyone who planned the Red Wedding ended up dead in the same way. Roose Bolton got stabbed by Ramsay ( He killed Robb by stabbing) Walder Frey got his throat slit by Arya (His soldier slit Catelyn's throat) House Frey were poisoned by Arya (Robb's army were tricked into drinking by Lannister and Frey soldier) Tywin Lannister was shot with a crossbow by Tyrion ( Catelyn and Robb were injured by crossbow shots)

How wonderful is it, that something as simple as a story, written and performed can evoke such pure emotion from people. It goes a long way to say how well a thing is made
It's not their anthem. It's a song that was written after the Lannisters utterly destroyed another House. Basically a small house rebelled against the Lannisters and Tywin wiped them all out. He literally had every man, woman and child of the smaller house killed. It's a very infamous song in Westeros and when Catelyn hears it she instantly knows what is going to happen but it's too late.
@@Riggswolfe I know. But I said that it was their "anthem" because it would be too long to explain. Don't forget that I talked to a person who doesn't know everything about the universe of Game of Thrones.
@@Riggswolfe So it's actually the opposite! The Lannisters used to be a much smaller house but one of their ancestors (Lann The Clever) tricked the Casterly's out of their castle and destroyed the entire family to take their place. That's why their home is still called Casterly Rock.
@@EmeraldDreams7 But that's not what the song is about. This song is about how Tywin annihilated house Reyne of Castamere, a vassal house that got too big for their boots. The song is basically a boast: stand up to house Lannister, and all that will be left is broken stone and ghosts.

Lol it was easy to tell which part of the video the red wedding was in, just scrolling through the thumbnail I can see Magy with a big glowing grin on her face all the time up until a certain point in the video where the grin is completely gone.
Jon Snow didn't take Ygrette with him because the Night's Watch would kill her. He knew she would be safer with the Wildlings as long as she didn't kill any. That is why he stopped her from defending him. Great reaction to the emotional "Red Wedding" episode, poor Magy..

(From the third A Song of Ice and Fire book "A Storm of Swords") Tywin: The blood is on Walder Frey's hands, not mine. Tyrion: Walder Frey is a peevish old man who lives to fondle his young wife and brood over all the slights he's suffered. I have no doubt he hatched this ugly chicken, but he would never have dared such a thing without a promise of protection. Tywin: I suppose you would have spared the boy and told Lord Frey you had no need of his allegiance? That would have driven the old fool right back into Stark's arms and won you another year of war. Explain to me why it is more noble to kill ten thousand men in battle than a dozen at dinner.

She: "This is a nice episode!"
So soon to say it my darling ... so soon

This song is the Rains of Castamere. This is the reason why Catelyn was worried, because it's the song of House Lannister.
You might heard this song after the Battle Of Blackwater episode during the credits.
Furthermore, when that song was played it signals the Frey and Bolton to turned on the Starks and Tully army outside the Twins.
"and who are you, the proud lord said, that I must bow so low? AND SO HE SPOKE AND SO HE SPOKE THAT LORD OF CASTAMERE AND NOW THE RAINS WE PORE HIS HALLS WITH NONE A SOUL TO HEAR....
"Aww, they're so, so happy." That's called foreshadowing in The Game of Thrones.
If I had the Tanos ganlet with all the stone I would snap for Game Of Thrones showrunner 😣
@starlord the best guardian The thing is in the book Rob Stark married a Lannister Cousin. She was "kidnapped" moments before the wedding. These changes from the book made the show interesting
for those who read the book. The killing of the pregnant wife was a kick in the gut for us book readers. After this we waited for Lady Stoneheart but she never showed. I am happy that they did the book justice, but it was tough. I cried and I knew it was coming.
@@grego-geek Thanos.... Not tanos
@@TheKukulkan I remember when I read the books I somewhat suspected him meeting this cousin was all a setup by the Lannisters to put a rift between the Starks and Freys. I don't think they knew it'd pay off this well though. In the show that's all pretty neatly avoided though.
@@TheKukulkan "The thing is in the book Rob Stark married a Lannister Cousin."

@@vighneshpillai7996the Red Wedding > Ozymandias
This is, until Benioff and Weiss replaced Martin's narrative with Hollywood sh*t.
@@victormanteca7395
Oh my sweet summer child.
@@ohauss Possibly; still that does not explain the egregious amount of plot armor we saw in the last seasons.
@@ohauss George RR Martin has repeatedly changed his story outline. I wouldn't put it out of question that he changed it again after seeing the backlash to the last season. Could be a reason for why it takes him so long to get winds out.

Fun fact from one of the biggest GoT fans ever:
This was my introduction to the series. First episode I watched. I had a friend that had read the books and thought this would happen in episode 10, so he said it would be fine for me to watch with them and get a feel for the series. I watched this the morning after it aired and immediately bought all of the books and began watching the series. He apologized profusely, but having this bandaid ripped off before I had a chance to love Robb was such a blessing.
lol
Omg, I had a similar experience. I saw a gifset of the red wedding deaths in Tumblr and I thought, "this looks very intense and impressive, I'll start watching" so I knew all along looool. I usually don't mind being spoiled but I kinda regret it being this one thing.
"They are all so happy."
- Oh you sweet summer child.
Now I want to see Maggie reacting to her reaction of this episode. Seeing herself so joyful and excited before it all happened

I also remember a Dave and Dan interview where this was the episode they were looking forward to filming and showing the most. Game of Thrones, never a happy ending.
A trivia about the Red Wedding. Everyone who planned the Red Wedding ended up dead in the same way.
Roose Bolton got stabbed by Ramsay ( He killed Robb by stabbing)
Walder Frey got his throat slit by Arya (His soldier slit Catelyn's throat)
House Frey were poisoned by Arya (Robb's army were tricked into drinking by Lannister and Frey soldier)
Tywin Lannister was shot with a crossbow by Tyrion ( Catelyn and Robb were injured by crossbow shots)
12:25 jorah looked like that because he loves dany and was jealous

How wonderful is it, that something as simple as a story, written and performed can evoke such pure emotion from people. It goes a long way to say how well a thing is made
Catelyn is weird because the music playing is the Lannister's anthem: the rains of Castamere.
@@sachamnc17 Fair enough.
I'm late to the party but I felt the same way. It was so sad. I had no idea what was going to happen. Was so excited for Rob his queen and all the starks. I cried to. Love your reactions!

Uh, just bless her sweet little heart!
(From the third A Song of Ice and Fire book "A Storm of Swords")
Tywin: The blood is on Walder Frey's hands, not mine.

@@MagicMagy We understand! That was us when this episode first aired... only we were ALL caught unprepared.
@@paulfeist Not all of us.We book readers knew what was coming because we already had been traumatized by the books years before. Though the show upped the ante somewhat because Rob was so much younger in the books (I think he's 15 in the books or close to it) and they added his genuine relationship with his wife (in the books he married a Westerosi noble man's daughter he had sex with when he was recovering from a battle against her father's forces, who were allied with the Lannisters.
