    Why does only one wear the white rope/ belt. What is its significance. Tx

    • @Anuitu2u
      @Anuitu2u 3 года назад +1

      Yokozuna (横綱, IPA: [jo̞ko̞d͡zɯᵝnaꜜ]) is the highest rank in sumo. The name literally means "horizontal rope" and comes from the most visible symbol of their rank, the rope (綱, tsuna) worn around the waist. The rope is similar to the shimenawa used to mark off sacred areas in Shinto, and like the shimenawa it serves to purify and mark off its content. The rope, which may weigh up to 20 kilograms (44 lb), is not used during the matches themselves, but is worn during the yokozuna's dohyo-iri ring entrance ceremony.

    • @Anuitu2u
      @Anuitu2u 3 года назад +1

      You could saya Yokozuna is a General rank in army. And, the white bell is the symbol of his rank, much like 4-star shoulder badge in a General attire.

    Hey! Do you happen to have the unedited version of this video still in your possession? If you would be ok with it, I would love to use it in a transformative video essay about sumo that I'm currently making! I would make sure to leave a link to your channel.

    nice video. is there a reason he held the sword upwards?

    • @RoninDave
      @RoninDave  5 лет назад +1

      the main thing about the sword is to signify a wrestler's status as to why that particular way I'm not sure. A number of traditions in sumo sometimes just started because one guy decided to do things a certain way. That's how the ring-entry ceremony styles happened.

    • @TheRedSphinx
      @TheRedSphinx 3 года назад +2

      They both have to be ranked in the Makuuchi division (the top division). But they can't be ranked as yokozuna or ozeki. The sword bearer (tachimochi) has to be higher ranked than the dew sweeper (tsuyuharai). Preferably, they should be members of the same stable (heya) as the yokozuna. However, if there is only one or no wrestlers from the stable that meet the criteria (or if they are on the injury list), then wrestlers from the same ichimon will be drafted in. For example in the video, Shohozan acts as Kisenosato's sword bearer, even though they belong to different stables, but within the same ichimon (the Nishonoseki ichimon). Same with Hakuho, who has Takarafuji as his sword bearer, the stables of both wrestlers belong to the Tatsunami ichimon.
      An ichimon is a group of affiliated stables. At the moment (Sep. 2021) there 42 stables and each belong to one of the five ichimons. Wrestlers from the same stable don't fight each other (except in play-offs), but wrestlers from the same ichimon do. So if a wrestler from a different stable, but the same ichimon, is slated to fight the yokozuna, he can't act as his attendent that day. The ichimon connection between stables also matters in other aspects of sumo, but it would take up to much space to explain all that stuff. 😎
      I should add that a yokozuna and/or an ozeki can act as attendants on special occasions. When a yokozuna holds his retirement ceremony, he will do one last dohyo-iri before his topknot is cut off, and if there are any active yokozuna and/or ozeki, they will act as attendants. Also, when a former yokozuna turns 60, he is allowed to do a kanreki dohyo-iri. He will wear a red tsuna (rope) and both retired and active yokozuna and/or ozeki can act as attendants.
