      @JeffHorchoff I've been watching for about 6 months now, and while I haven't watched all of your videos, I have watched close to a hundred! This was just the first video I commented on 😀. My sister used to live on several acres and a local beekeeper used to keep some hives on the property. In payment, he'd give her a "Homer" bucket full of raw honey every year. Lucky for me, she'd give me a couple jars of honey every year! Unfortunately, the party she was renting from sold the property and no longer get that delicious honey.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  Месяц назад +3

      It is very common to have the comb at the end of the hive, which at one time was full of honey, to be all dried out. The reason is because it is not being used at the moment. However, when the next nectar flow happens and the bees begin storing nectar in it, the comb becomes soft once again. There were a lot of bees in this hive but because the comb was so large, they were able to hide themselves on the part we could not see. It's always a delight for me hearing when viewers enjoy watching our fun, thank you for that. Until the next one, God's peace Denise.

    One thing I learned this time and I hope you don't find this disrespectful, when you first crawled in under the building and shone the torch up at the hive, your veil of your bee hood was sagging down against your nose. God bless you guys you're awesome 👍👋😃

    Another 12 inches high and you could have stood up! LOL Don't feel bad. I am height challenged too! But as a suggestion try using a heavy metal spatula to remove comb. You can even sharpen it a little if you need to. But the angle of the handle makes it a lot easier to cut comb off flush to a wall, floor or ceiling.

    You said you know the difference between robber bees and hive bees because robber bees are the ones swarming around and the hive bees are the ones staying on the hive to protect it? Do I have that right? I was just curious how you are able to mitigate the amount of robber bees that end up in the bag with the rest of the colony?

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  Месяц назад

      That is how I can tell the difference, but once the robber bees become so numerous, even that method can't be used and that's when I stop vacuuming bees as I do not want to vacuum the robber bees. Thanks for watching. God's peace Dawn.

    Thank you for your videos Mr. Ed!
    Because of you I am getting ready ( and slightly terrified) to start my beekeeping journey. Would you ever consider making a beekeeping 101 series?
    I am interested in beekeeping primarely because I have a tropical fruit orchard and would benefit in the extra pollinators buzzing around. Yes the honey will be nice but I am very excited about the beeswax for making things like candles, skincare products for my personal use, etc... if I am primarily interested in the wax would you recomend foundationless boxes rather than plastic beeswax coated frames?

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  Месяц назад

      I am so excited for you as you begin your beekeeping journey, especially because of the fact you have a fruit orchard that really can use the presence of the bees. I have always said that the world needs as many beekeepers as it can get, and I am here to welcome you personally into the wonderful world of keeping bees! Two point, I want you to be aware of, regardless of what you read or watch, make sure the information pertains specifically to the area you live in, and find a bee club in the area you live in and join it. It is best to learn from others that live in your specific area. Example, don't keep bees the same way someone living in the north does if you live in the south, and find a Personally, I recommend using plastic foundation with a heavy wax coating, you will find the bees draw comb a lot faster, and they use less resources doing so. Still, the choice of which way to go is left up to the individual person. I will give serious consideration to making a "beekeeping 101" series. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my over 600 bee wrangling/ bee rescue adventure videos and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace.

    How do you tell the difference between the hive bees 🐝 & the robber bees?.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  Месяц назад +1

      It very easy, the robber bees are all wearing masks and carrying a very small, but noticeable, pistol. Actually, the hive bees are the ones acting normal, as if they belong there whereas the robber bees act very nervous because they don't belong there. Of course once so many robber bees show up, even that method can't be used as there is total confusion in the hive. It is for that reason I have to stop vacuuming bees as I do not want to vacuum the robber bees....or at least not to many of them. Thanks for watching. God's peace Heather.

      I so vacuum robber bees accidentally, and as long as I do not vacuum to many of them, they will become part of the hive. If to many are vacuumed they will fight in the bee vac which is why I have to stop vacuuming once the colony is over run by robbers. If you spray dry cone with water what happens? Does it get more flexible and less crumbly or does it disintegrate?

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  Месяц назад

      Because the natural properties of wax repel water and not absorb it, spraying it with water would have no effect on it other than getting it wet. The only way the wax can become supple again is to have the bees begin working it once again, and when that happens, the wax softens up very nicely. Thanks for watching. God's peace.

    That was a contortionists exercise! Mr. Ed, why does old comb get that black look? Brown I understand. Can it be recovered and cleaned?

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  Месяц назад

      Bees wax get darker by the traffic of the bees walking on it and from having the brood develop in it. The more traffic and brood the comb receives, the darker it gets till it is almost black. The color of the comb is one of the best ways of determining how old the colony is, once the comb turns almost black, the hive is at least 3 - 5 years old. Thanks for watching. God's peace.

    Clearly, you all love the bees, but this seems like a lot of work. I suppose if you didn't take the bees, someone would exterminate them, so disturbing the bees is a net benefit to them. The homeowner gets the bees removed and you get new hives. But is the value of new hives your main driver, or is it just love?

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  Месяц назад +1

      Rescuing bees is a LOT of hard work, but the driving force of saving bees from extermination is simply a love and gratitude for bees, especially since they provide such an important role in our very survival. Thanks for watching. God's peace John.

      Da Louisiana in vielen Teilen so niedrig liegt, liegen manche Orte wie New Orleans tatsächlich unter dem Meeresspiegel und die Häuser werden erhöht gebaut. Der Grund besteht darin, Überschwemmungen zu verhindern, und es funktioniert sehr gut. Da erhöhte Häuser jedoch den idealen Ort für den Bau ihrer Bienenvölker darstellen, ist dieser Ort sehr sicher und geschützt. Umzüge wie dieser kommen häufig vor. Ich veröffentliche diese Videos, um zu zeigen, wie wichtig Bienen für unser Überleben sind und warum Wir sollten sie nicht einfach aus Unwissenheit töten. Ich rette seit über 14 Jahren Bienen vor der unnötigen Vernichtung und hoffe, dies auch noch viele Jahre lang tun zu können.
