  • Cellist Nuala McKenna performs from: ‘Signs, Games and Messages’ - Jelek 1 and Jelek 2 , composed by György Kurtág. Recorded in the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo.
The Hungarian composer György Kurtág turned 95 in 2021. The trademark of Kurtág's music is its brevity. ‘Signs, Games and Messages’ is a cycle of pieces that vary in length. The earliest pieces of ‘Signs, Games and Messages’ date back to 1961 - none of them exceed five minutes and most are about a minute long. Kurtág has always been a master of miniature.
The young German-Irish cellist Nuala McKenna has developed a great love for the solo repertoire in recent years. That is why her debut album "Solo" was recently released. “Solo” won the prestigious Diapason d‘Or.
Here in the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterloo (Holland) she plays a varied program. Nuala likes to play recitals where Bach goes hand in hand with modern composers such as György Kurtág and Benjamin Britten.
Nuala McKenna studied with Jean-Guihen Queyras for four years and was an "academist" with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, where she played for a season. In March 2019 Nuala has started work in her new position as solo cellist in the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen.
