  • After many hours, weeks, months of intensive work with the composer György Kurtàg I have performed 7 pieces from his ‘ Signs, Games and Messages’ for cello solo during the celebration of the 80th anniversary of our common friend Prof. Eberhard Feltz in Berlin.
    The live recording contains:
1, Pilinszky János: Gérard de Nerval (1’30’’)
    2, Népdalféle - Im Volkston (0’55’’)
3, Thomas Blum in memoriam (2’15’’)
    4, Az Hit (1’55’’)
    5, Souvenir de Balatonboglár in 5/8 (0’55’’)
6, Kroó György in memoriam (4’45’’)
    7, Shadows (0’45’’)
My collaboration with György Kuràg started in 1995 when as the Artistic Director of the Orlando Festival I had invited him as an artist and composer to honour him during two weeks and asked Kurtàg to choose the programme and the performers. During these 14 concerts we performed pieces by Mozart, Schumann and - the complete - chamber music of Kurtàg at the time.
Our work together became even more intense, when with a consortium of musical institutions we invited him to The Netherlands as a Composer in Residence. During these two years he composed stringtrios for our Orlando Trio and solo pieces for the three instruments. For the ‘Kroó György in memoriam’ he wrote a dedication:
“For Metz Pista with great affection and many thanks fort he first reading and for the finding out of the only great ‘C’ Gyuri “.
With the presence of the composer we recorded the ‘Signs, Games and Messages’ and won the ‘Jahrespreis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik’ 2003 and the ‘Edison’ 2004.
I heard through Kurtàg about the wonderful chamber music teacher in Berlin Prof. Eberhard Feltz. Since then, as a Director of the NSKA (Dutch StringQuartet Academy) I invited him many times to our masterclasses in Amsterdam.
    Stefan Metz
