By the time the series got around to the saiyan saga, though, in the original manga, she had gotten less screen time until she stopped making appearances altogether. Dragon Ball Z Abridged only gets better with time, especially right after episode 10. They really up the team and budget it seemed. The writing is also a lot better. It becomes a lot more new people friendly with later episodes I feel like.
9:34 it’s a joke based on the infamous “dragon ball evolution” life-action movie. The movie was soooo bad that the fandom agrees that it was a big insult to Japan. Even the creator of DBZ, Akira Toriyama, was so disgusted with the movie that he decided to come out of retirement and created more dragon ball content; Dragon Ball Super-since he didn’t want that movie to be the last piece of Dragon Ball content that fans would remember.
Some trivia for you both(at least that does not contain spoilers) and chat feel free to correct me! - The Kamehameha vs Galick Gun duel is one of the first iconic scenes of the series. You can find art pieces of it online. - The call backs with Bulma, Oolong(the pig), Roshi, and the rest at the house are jests at how the series made the cast from the previous series largely irrelevant. They still partake in the main story, but not as much as in DragonBall, which is a series I 100% reccommend you both watch. - Launch is a character Toriyama, the author of DBZ, actually forgot he created. - 9:24 the things Goku was saying here are references to the terribly recieved live action Dragon Ball film. It was bad by the standards of DB fans, casual moviegoers, and critics. Literally no one liked it. - Yajirobe was able to cut Vegeta's tail because his power level was so low that Vegeta did not register his presence, especially with the presences of Goku, Gohan, and Krillin. It's also likely his guard was not up as he was over-confident in thinking he was about to win. In season 2 of TFS, the jokes and gags take on a life of their own, but there is still some meta humor. If you liked season 1, you're going to love seasons 2 and 3.
I'm here again for quick lore dumps. The Kaioken multiplies your base power but puts a massive toll on your body (King Kai advises against even doing the times 3). Launch was one of their friends in the original Dragon Ball and Toriyama kind of just forgot about her, she changes personalities (and hair colour) when she sneezes. You'll meet the always naked Freeza later. Icarus is a movie/filler only friend of Gohan's.
Don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet but in the original dragon ball z manga goku tells krillin to not kill vegeta because he wanted to fight him again. This was changed when it was translated and is a recurring trend with goku, his dialogue hints that he's mainly fighting all of these villains because he just wants to fight strong opponents, something the author Toriyama has mentioned.
That fits with what we learned in death battle with Goku. Remember them saying that Goku just really wants to test his strength and fight people at their strongest 🙂
In the actual show, this fight lasted for several episodes, and most of it was Vegeta knocking the crap out of Goku. It isn't really explained in Abridged, the Kaio-ken is a power amplifier. It doubles all of Goku's physical abilities, but only for a few seconds and it risks doing a lot of damage to his body and puts Goku at or just below Vegeta's level. The Kaio-ken x3 triples it, Kaio-kenx4 quadruples it etc, but all with increasingly exponential risk. It's the only options Goku has to match Vegeta's power.
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 That's honestly pretty normal for DBZ. The final battle in the next season is the longest fight scene in anime history; it lasts for 19 episodes. Part of the reason was because the show had caught up with the manga, and they needed to drag it out for that the author could write the rest of the story. Every single remastered version of the show cuts down this fight scene considerable. As you'd probably expect, abridged very much...well...abridges it. But it still makes for an epic encounter. If you were ever going to watch DBZ - the actual show - I'd suggest watching Dragon Ball Kai. It's an abridged recut that cuts out a lot of the filler episodes and, in addition to having much better voice acting than the original dub, a lot of the fight scenes aren't so padded. But you still get the full story. It's mostly just filler content that's removed.
Before you get to season 2. I recommend that you start with bardock father of goku, deadzone, and the worlds strongest. Love the reactions. Can’t wait for the next uncharted livestream as well.
I agree with the Bardock Movie, but unfortunately, Dead Zone has a spoiler at the end of it. So they should skip the other 2 Movies until the time is right.
TFS skipped this little detail. In the original DB, at the very beginning of the series, Goku tells Bulma and Yamcha that his step grandpa told him that never go outside during the full moon because a terrible monster appears at those moments. Of course the monster was Goku and his grandpa was preventing Goku to transform in the Ozaru. But one night Goku went outside at night because he had to pee, there was full moon and he transformed destroying everything and sadly killing his grandpa because he was irrational and savage as Gohan, not like Vegeta who could be aware during the Ozaru phase. Goku never knew this. After transforming 2 times in the original DB nobody told him about it (to protect him of knowing the death of his grandpa) so he never knew until Vegeta transformed and he realised he was the monster who killed his grandpa.
The thing about Goku remembering high school is that it's a reference to dragonball evolution, the live action atrocity that made everyone clamber about how trash of a movie it was in having almost nothing to do with the original show from getting not just the characters wrong in how they are portrayed, but even calling ki, (the energy used for the Kamehameha and galic gun for example) air bending, that Akira Toriyama went in to create DragonBall Super, not wanting the movie to be the last thing remembered by dragonball fans.
To explain why Goku was so gassed, he has this new transformation called Kaioken. It basically multiplies his physical strength and muscle mass, kind of pushing him to the limit with how much power he can throw around. However, while it was enough to completely one shot Nappa, it basically just leveled the playing field with Vegeta... Until Vegeta started to actually try due to being mad someone could lay a hand on him. Going against King Kai's instructions not to overdo it, Goku basically activated the transformation... While already transformed. Kaioken can be stacked on top of itself, but this would shatter the body of anyone who would attempt it since, again, you are already being pushed to your limit the first time. Due to Goku's saiyan biology and ridiculous stamina, he was able to withstand it stacked up to three times, but four was definitely his breaking point. Kaioken x4 right now is Goku's maximum power output, which he can only maintain very briefly before his body just completely exhausts itself. So, yeah, smart move using it to amplify a Kamehameha instead of trying to use it to fight normally. Spirit Bomb, the other move he picked up from King Kai, is handy because it doesn't use Goku's energy at all, he pulls from the planet itself. The reason Krillin could take it from Goku, it bouncing harmlessly off Gohan, and it totally wrecking Vegeta is due to the inherent alignment of the attack being unable to harm anyone with a good heart. So yeah, Goku made the right call by having Gohan try to block it, knowing that it can't hurt him at all. Some of the early movies are rather short, so you *might* be able to double up on the earliest ones, but I totally understand wanting to go at them one at a time. What's going to be the order of progression? We're kind of at a bulk point where a number of movies and specials can be viewed prior to Season 2's proper start. Let's see... Dead Zone and World's Strongest immediately come to mind. However there is an episode that isn't numbered, the Bardock special. That one is less of a movie and more of a backstory episode that gives context to the events of Season 2, so I'd recommend treating it as an episode 10.5 or something. Basically, try to watch it before Episode 13 for the most impact. Loved seeing your reactions and I'm super excited for getting to Season 2 proper. What is your opinion on the evolving comedy and characters? Episode 10 is definitely the most in-universe episode of the first season, with meta jokes being heavily dialed back. Also, one last piece of trivia, the Narrator is voiced by LittleKuriboh, who will be voicing another character very soon. LittleKuriboh is famous for starting the whole Abridged Series trend back when RUclips was still young, and his YuGiOh Abridged series is not just the first one, but it is the longest-running Abridged Series on the platform, bar none. Unfortunately, it is... Kind of impossible to get into these days. If you thought Season 1 of this series was cringey at first, it absolutely pales in comparison to the absolute suffering that is the early episodes of YGO Abridged. Dated jokes, terrible audio recording, poor LittleKuriboh voicing every single character. You can't even jump into the middle of the series as, while funny on its own, the show still heavily references jokes made earlier in the series. ...Why are my comments always books...?
Haha, we enjoy a good book. 😉 especially Bethany 🤗 Thanks for giving us some more knowledge and trivia. We are doing the movies on their own and are going to do the Bardock special after 11 and 12. Also fitting in the Kai episode they did 😅
The high school comment refers to the whitewashed mess that is “Dragonball: Evolution.” It’s okay if you didn’t know that; nobody else did. I didn’t even see it, I just assumed. And there is one line that I caught with the Christopher Walken joke, where Vegeta says Christopher Reeves, when the actor’s surname was Reeve.
In the actual dbz series, this is my favorite battle of all. In the manga its full of amazing panels that, despite being static images, carry a strong sense of movement and momentum
I don't know if you guys caught that but if you go back to where Gohan bounced the spirit bomb back at Vegeta, you'll hear that there was a Sonic Spring sound effect
History Time: "Remember the Red Ribbon Army?" < That was a Dragonball Story Arch where Goku & Friends where up against... you guest it... the Red Ribbon Army ^^ At the end, Goku went into their Headquarters and basically Genocided everyone that was there. "And King Piccolo ?" < That was our Piccolos Father, who was trapped in a Rice cocker by Roshi (the old guy with the Turtle shell). When we was released, he wished his Youth back from the Dragon and started Conquering the World, killing Roshi, Krillin and Chiaotzu doing it. That was the point where Goku meet Kami ("God") and got trained by him. It endet with Goku killing the old Piccolo, while beaten to the point of only having 1 arm left intakt. Nappa really makes the first season bearable. This was in TFS's infancy before becoming better editors/writers. It's still funny but the later seasons stray away from the obscure references and go into more long form bits and humor more friendly to someone not familiar with the story, while still getting the story across. Toriyama (The creator of DB and DBZ and DBS) is infamous among fans for retconning certain mechanics and plot points and this series makes fun of that a lot, without taking away from what we actually all grew up loving about the show. The only jokes that should go over your head after this are pretty much all like that and nerds like me are sure to comment and explain them. A good example is the girl in the bar named Launch who in the Dragonball series was a fairly important character but was basically forgotten about by Toriyama. Or when they show the rest of the crew sitting at the table going "Remember when we used to do stuff?" Loving your reactions though, can't wait to see ya'll go through this amazing comedic journey.
Some good news for you guys; The show gets WAY better from this point on. I actually have trouble watching these first few episodes since they're trying to find their footing, as even the inspiration for this series, Yugioh Abridged, started stronger. To Team Four Star's credit, they kept improving their humor, pacing and editing, and by the last season it arguably outshone the original shows in certain moments.

As far as tails regrowing goes, that's not something that constantly happens. There's just a small chance that a Saiyan who has lost their tail will randomly regrow it.
Goku is not innocent. He is freaking irresponsable 😆 (And adorable in this parody) But by all means.. it was for the plot. Vegeta was the strongest opponent for him at this point. And it is in Saiyan's nature to get better and better. Vegeta is not that diffrent from him in the original show.. because of that "draw" he takes a grudge on him.
Kaio-ken (Kaiōken) lit. "World King Fist" or "Fist of the King of the Worlds") is a technique invented by King Kai; however, Goku is the only person ever to use it successfully. It is a technique that multiplies the user's ki for a "heartbeat" - thus increasing their power and speed and enabling them to inflict serious damage to opponents who are considerably stronger than them. However, the downside of the Kaio-ken is that it takes a heavy toll on the user's body, making them more vulnerable to enemy attacks. While in the state, the user's aura color becomes crimson. The technique requires the use of ki control to handle it properly. Kaio-ken 4x so his power level increses four times. duh 😅 Which means in this fight it was 24.000. As the mighty Oózarú Vetega's powerlevel was 180.000. Outch-Time.
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 It is his own technique and unique. It would be very effective if Krillin and the others had learned it too, but by that logic the DBZ universe doesn't work There is an old beautiful song that almost sums it up well. "I did it my way!"
It's hilarous how progressively more annoyed Vegeta gets thoroughout all this. I almost feel bad for him having to deal with everyone's shit. Almost. He's still evil
Nappa part was made up, after Vegeta killed him there was no more of him ever from then on, btw next saga you have to watch original to enjoy the action. Btw you can watch original Dragon Ball movies on youtube that are not abridged
Didn't Piccolo remove Gohan's tail in an earlier episode? Other thing I find strange in this episode is that Vegeta uses the Destructo Disc attack, which is originally Krillin's signature move. I suppose it's simple enough of a move to be copied on the fly by Vegeta albeit Vegeta is not really known for using other peoples techniques, at least not to the same degree that Goku is. This episode was excellent at showcasing Goku's priorities. 1. Food. 2. Fighting. 3. Protecting everyone and giving everyone unlimited chances as long as they want them. He is a horrible father though and you saw a glimpse of it here, but that's something that's going to come up time and time again. But there is a reason for that. According to Akira Toriyama, the Saiyans don't have families like we humans do. Their life partners are more like companions and family are more like really close acquaintances and this is highlighted in Goku more than in the other Saiyans.
I will give Vegeta a break on Destructo Disk because Vegeta actually recognized what kind of attack it was the first time Krillin used it and how dangerous it was, given (Spoiler) can also do a similar technique, maybe Vegeta had seen it before, or tried using it before too. It wasn't his first time witnesses an attack like Krillin's.
The Saiyan's tails grow back. Goku had his tail cut or plucked I think 3 or 4 times in the original Dragonball. It seems to take about a year to grow back and it comes back all at once, not gradually. The reason it doesn't come back in the future is because they all have it surgically removed by bulma to prevent it from doing so. Goku starts out DBZ having already gone through the surgery while Gohan and Vegeta gets it done later.
@@Alphasnowbordergirl I mean, pretty sure it's a plothole if it's never explained how the tails came back to begin with. If it is to be assumed they grow back after a year or two in that universe as you claim however, I stand corrected.
If some stuff seems a little off, this was 14 hours or 35 episodes they condensed into 10. Although DBZ does stretch things out which made it infuriating when it was on TV. Kind of annoying when you had to wait 3 episodes for Goku to use the Spirit Bomb and it's being shown out weekly.
Bet that would be frustrating as hell getting through the filler episodes knowing they are just waiting on source material and then needed of course to produce everything 😖

Part 1: The only thing I can really say here is the table talk part; they were referencing all the major plots of the original Dragonball series and how they used to be more of use than they are in this series. Part 2: The beginning where Goku is talking about being picked on and worrying about Chi-Chi liking him is a reference to the terrible (and I mean TERRIBLE) Dragonball: Evolution live-action movie that came out in 2008 where the movie had no love for the original story of Dragonball and they pretty much made Goku into a hopeless teenager that wanted to be a typical high-school student and not a fighter. And Frieza is an upcoming enemy that you will soon discover if you continue watching the series. Part 3: The dramatic pause on "Big Bang...kind of attack" is a reference to a attack that Vegeta uses later in the series called "Big Bang Attack". The Kaio-ken attack is an form that while it doubles/triples or whatever the "Times this number" your power, speed and strength, it also damages your body in that amount. so the higher the number...the higher the backlash of overloading your body that had more power than it could hold will suffer. The highest he ever went to was Times 20. but never used it again until way way way in the future. Because it was too mcuh of a risk.

I say you're correct with all of these. Good work!
Thanks so much for all this info. Helping answer some questions we had and giving context to some jokes 🙂😀
Only thing is that Vegeta can't sense people's energy at this point in the story so he wouldn't have been able to sense Yajirobe anyways.
@@yannym4605 That's a very fair point, but I guess semantics-wise he didn't pick up on any danger from Yajirobe.
For clarification, Gohan was able to redirect the Spirit Ball because he did not have any evil in his heart.
Vegeta really DIDN'T kill anyone on Earth, that was all Nappa. lol
Guess you’re right now that we think about it 😂🤗
I'm here again for quick lore dumps.
Poor Launch 😢
Damn. That’s a crazy fight to have it last several episodes in the full series 😯😀
@@seraphinaaizen6278 I think this played to Team Four Star's advantage. They had a lot of footage to edit from.
Yeah this is absolutely not the series to be concerned about chronological order
@@marlinjost8740 Even Bardock has a spoiler for people completely new to the series since it was released after the Namek saga.
We are checking that all out before season 2. Well, the Bardock one we are doing between 11 and 12. 🙂🤗
😎🤟
Kaio what?! **WHAM!!!* is one of their best long running gags
5:47 The Beginning of a beautiful rivalry Hate-Love relationship.
"Jeets"
I don't know if you guys caught that but if you go back to where Gohan bounced the spirit bomb back at Vegeta, you'll hear that there was a Sonic Spring sound effect
History Time:
"Remember the Red Ribbon Army?" < That was a Dragonball Story Arch where Goku & Friends where up against... you guest it... the Red Ribbon Army ^^ At the end, Goku went into their Headquarters and basically Genocided everyone that was there.
"What happened to Launch ?" < She was one of the characters in Dragon Ball that where part of the crew, but with Dragon Ball Z, she was forgotten.

Or when they show the rest of the crew sitting at the table going "Remember when we used to do stuff?"
Loving your reactions though, can't wait to see ya'll go through this amazing comedic journey.
Looking forward to the evolution of the series and glad you are enjoying watching these again with us 😀🥳
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 Love how interactive you guys are with the community too
Season 1 was definitely rough, but even in episode 10 it starts to show some potential of how good DBZA is going forward.

🤔🧐
12:35 NEEEEEEERRRRD!
16:08 That seems accurate for Earth.
Glad to hear they stuck with it and kept improving and refining their style 🙂
I have to thank Wallace & Gromitt if I could get the joke in Goku's line about the moon made out of cheese 😂
"I am surrounded by idiots" - me every day
"AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!" - me when someone say "Dragon Ball Evolution" is not that bad...

Vegeeeta, geeta, geeta dun dun dududunn.... great now thats stuck in my head for the next few days again xD Be advised that a lot of the movies - though by far not all of them - have a Christmas theme as TFS tended to put them out aound the holidays^^ can't wait for the next ones 🙂
We love Christmas themes 😀 🎄 😊
They went through 35 episodes of content over about 5 full length eps total minutes wise...crazy
In case you don't know about it, DBZA also have their abridged Kai versions - a very short, and hilarious, episode that sums up the entire season! Worth checking out, even if you don't do a reaction to it
We plan on checking it out before season 2
The moon just comes back eventually with no explanation
Isn't it implied it's just the artificial moon going forward?

As far as tails regrowing goes, that's not something that constantly happens. There's just a small chance that a Saiyan who has lost their tail will randomly regrow it.
😎👍🙂
Goku is not innocent. He is freaking irresponsable 😆 (And adorable in this parody) But by all means.. it was for the plot. Vegeta was the strongest opponent for him at this point. And it is in Saiyan's nature to get better and better. Vegeta is not that diffrent from him in the original show.. because of that "draw" he takes a grudge on him.
We’ve been told that Vegeta and Piccolo are closest to how they are in original series 🙂
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 Pretty close indeed. It's complicated

Bethany's "omg" at 10:40 took me out😂. She was so horified
😳😨😜
Outch-Time.
So only King Kai can teach it? Could others learn it from him like Vegeta and Broly 🤔
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 It is his own technique and unique.
It would be very effective if Krillin and the others had learned it too, but by that logic the DBZ universe doesn't work
There is an old beautiful song that almost sums it up well.
"I did it my way!"

And from now on, we're about to REALLY start Dragon Ball Z Abridged
😀🥳
look for the secret images in the solar flares!
🧐
The tail grew back. It's a bit of a plothole but it's the only explanation that would make sense.
@@anthonydeadman Not a plothole. Happened multiple times to goku in dragonball.
@@Alphasnowbordergirl I mean, pretty sure it's a plothole if it's never explained how the tails came back to begin with.
If it is to be assumed they grow back after a year or two in that universe as you claim however, I stand corrected.
If Moonlight is technically just reflected sunlight, shouldn’t saiyans with tails be able to transform whenever they want?
Technically they can as seen with broly akari form
Good point 🤔
14:45 So heartwarming 😊
☺️
If some stuff seems a little off, this was 14 hours or 35 episodes they condensed into 10. Although DBZ does stretch things out which made it infuriating when it was on TV. Kind of annoying when you had to wait 3 episodes for Goku to use the Spirit Bomb and it's being shown out weekly.
Bet that would be frustrating as hell getting through the filler episodes knowing they are just waiting on source material and then needed of course to produce everything 😖

God. Dammit. Nappa.

Thanks for helping out with explaining Kaoi-Ken to us. And the other info for stuff that went over our head 🙂
