- So many of these "WTF happened to" videos focus on a film that had behind the scenes issues or were catastrophic bombs in theaters and we dissect what went wrong, but every so often we here at Joblo like to examine what went right with a movie. In 2019, a movie seemingly came out of nowhere to become a cultural milestone that not only sparked controversy but also broke records. Sit back and put on a happy face as we figure out just WTF Happened to Todd Phillips' Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix in his Oscar-winning role!
Joker was a film that no one seemed to want when it was announced, yet two creative forces, completely separate of each other, desired to make a low budget film set in the world of comic books that really took a deep dive into the character. In a world where comic book movies based in continuing universes seem to be starting to grow stale, Warner Brothers along with Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix took a huge risk in presenting a different vision to the world. The results would be one of the biggest films ever made.

I recently rewatched after 4 years of never coming back around to it, and it's definitely a well crafted drama heavily inspired by the likes of "Taxi Driver." Todd Phillips declining the upfront director's salary in order to bet on himself and get 10% of the film's total gross ($100 million payday) is one of the ballsiest gambles in film history.
George Lucas did the same but with a Franchise that wasnt even a Franchise yet lol
Well crafted in a technical sense, sure. I think it is vastly overrated and mediocre myself.

Joker
Well we are all entitled to our opinions👍
Although Warner Bros.' marketing team certainly played a role in the success of the Joker character. But many like myself have embraced on the The Dark Knight character Heath Ledger's and the film's approach.
I saw this in the theater with my Dad and everyone in the theater including me had an un easy feeling once the movie was done. It didn’t feel like we just watched a movie it felt like we were in Jokers mind
That's actually the description of a film that has done an excellent job of a character study.
There was a sense of panic in the air, everyone in that theater was "okay a deranged psychotic active shooter is going to happen right about NOW......, okay false alarm, because the actual surprise is NOW....., okay things are still quiet, but as I walk to the exit the nut job rears is ugly mug right about NOW....., alright coast is clear. Now we can go home and rest in our bed, hear the popcorn machine in the distance, oh fuck it's happening....., wait no nothing......, let's just go".
People were expecting a repeat of the 2012 Aurora, Colorado massacre.
I had a similar experience after seeing it on opening day. I live alone, and didn't feel "right" about going home right away. I sat in a local park for an hour or so, just processing the feelings I had, and decompressing.
Modern day classic.
The Aurora shooter wasn't dressed as the Joker. That's been debunked by the local police. Fact check, guys. Please.
Y’all should do a “wtf happened to Jamie Kennedy”.
If its a musical in an alternate universe. It woulr be good to see Billy Dee Williams return as Harvey Dent
I look at all the actors who played the joker 🃏 so far and the only 1 who didn’t get it right was Jared Leto,my all time fav is Cesar Romero in the bat 🦇 tv 📺 show.
It became one of the best DC movies ever, thats what happened
I can’t put into words how much I dislike this movie! An undoubtedly great performance by Phoenix. And maybe the fact that it’s a joker origin story is part of why I hate it. But more then anything else it’s just boring. Aside from 2-3 interesting scenes it’s just mind numbingly boring. And I’m so tired of people saying I just don’t understand it. I do. I just do not like it.
Whenever people say what you say people who like will be li,e oh well you just don’t get mental illness lol like this film is anyway subtle or new in dealing with that subject matter.
I hear he's getting a new Harley Quinn. She is a real monster with a poker face.
Joker gets to dance in the bathroom, why the extras can't use it
Great Movie!
So Joker 2 isn’t a musical. It is a psychological thriller with a couple of musical numbers.
Joker 2 isn’t a musical, you just have schizophrenia.
+AdamJKPunk
Oh, thank God!! When he said it was going to be a musical, I was hoping it would be more so in the sense that "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" is a musical, than the likes of "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street."
We will see if this is the truth lol, with the record of awful movies coming out last and this year so far we will see the path Joker 2 follows.
@@danneltheflannel Fingers crossed they don't screw this one up. 🤞
i hope so
tragedy doesn't mean "something bad happened" tragedy means "something bad was inevitable"

Well said
This intepretation of the Joker is one of my all time favorites! Joaquin Phoenix's performance as the character was just phenomenal!
James Holmes, the Aurora shooter, was not dressed as the Joker, as you say. When he was apprehended, he stated to the authorities that "he was the Joker."
Wonder if he's said that to the large dudes who've raped his ass in prison?
Minor correction at 15:36 The dark knight shooter wasn't dressed as the joker, nor did he ever say "Im the Joker" when he was caught. It is something that every news outlet reported at the time and was later determined to be false. It's sick how news media will sensationalize a tragedy to boost news.
You are correct. I was bummed when i heard him say that. Should have dug alittle deeper on that statement. But it’s all good
Yes, that's becoming a modern legend now.
Talk about unreliable narrators …
Warner Bros lose their minds over a good movie, but calm releasing crap movies
The Colorado shooter wasn't dressed as the Joker. He was in tactical gear and had orange hair. The media and online twitter mob just went crazy with the film. In fact, the book on him says he wasn't motivated by the Joker. Pysch evaluation can't even pinpoint what was wrong with him. Luckily he's where he belongs.
Congratulations to Joaquin Phoenix for deservedly scooping up the Best Actor Oscar for his chilling performance as the troubled Arthur Fleck, AKA Joker. I reckon that River would be incredibly proud of his brother. 🃏😁
I felt Joaquin Phoenix deserved the oscar already for Walk The Line. But guess he was meant to win for The Joker.
Truer words were never spoken.
This movie was really dark, dismal, and very disturbing. I loved every second of it! It certainly felt a lot more real than any comic book movie ever did. The utter disregard we tend to have for our fellow human beings and the disastrous consequences are the pigments this movie was painted in.
Truer words were never spoken.
Many people who dislike this film dislike it for reasons that have absolutely nothing to do with the film itself, and when you see a lot of their criticisms, you realize that many of them don’t even know why they dislike it other than they were told to.
Yeah, that's what I constantly hear. I agree. But it also scarcely matters; I do dislike it just as a film and think it vastly overrated.
How is someone told to dislike it? Lol. I'm one of the biggest Joker fans & i didn't really like it the 1st time i saw it. Wasn't no Batman, or any other comic characters. They coulda made this film about a joe blow lunatic & people that ain't comic book fans wouldn't know the difference....
@@aceloco817 Your stated reason for not liking the film is legit and a comic fan could easily watch the film and see where you were coming from. When you hear people repeating the same things over and over like "the film was made for incels" something that is only subjective opinion that they can't even name a specific scene that gave them that impression, and you quickly realize that they are mimicking stuff they got from their echo chamber, and probably didn't even watch the film.
Also bad movies come out all the time and few people even remember them after a month. That you can still find people that out of the blue will start ranting about the Joker and saying what a terrible film it was shows that they dislike it for more than simply thinking it's a bad film. Nobody brings up Steel, WW '84 or Birds of Prey that frequently -- all of which are arguably worse films than The Joker. This film bothers people on some ideological level.
@@wet-readHow is it overrated if most people say it's bad?
@@positivetakes5592
Overrated by the majority of people, the lay public.
I think that the great success of this movie is because it doesn't feel like the DC Joker, it is a fresh version of the Joker and follows no parameters already established, the movie flys on her own wings.
Joker himself in The Killing Joke said, "If I’m going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice!"
Jack Nicholson is the one and only joker. Because he had the joker SMILE. The others had to paint the smile on. Nobody else comes close. The rest are just guys in joker make up. IMO.
That's your opinion
His smile was awful along with his obviously forced acting. There is yet to be a cannon live action joker
Thats why I've said it's your opinion which I don't agree with
@@kentkariuki8321 I don’t agree with your Nintendo looking last name. Read a comic
@@jacobfilasky2729 i also don't agree with you you racist idiot
I didn't think the Joker movie was necessary but I did like Joaquin Phoenix's performance. It was very good and it was extremely unnerving watching him go insane playing the Joker. This is what a good director and a good writer does because if you look really deep on the surface of the movie, it really wasn't that great in terms of story or any meaningful impact on the DC verse.
Understandable too what You mean
That's the problem with people..they individually cry in internet over what is important or not when they have no f**king clue about the reality
@@amimim69 Right?
Why does everything need to exist in a shared universe? I think the idea of that is ruining the potential of great characters
@@The_Bigot whos saying that?
The first movie was a blast. Should have left it at that, though. But of course they needed to film a second movie, since it turned out to be a promising new milking cow. They'll fuk it all up with the second one. What a shame
I have hopes the sequel will be good but I'm worried, the sequel could be a dumpster fire
Joker is my favorite movie of the 2010s! It should’ve won Best Picture at the Oscars! I watched this movie twice in theaters because it was so relatable to what’s going on NYC! This movie doesn’t even need a sequel, Todd Phillips shouldn’t even make a Joker sequel!
I lived in the South Bronx when Joker was filmed and released. While the mass of tourists coming to the middle of the hood drove a lot of us nuts, when we went to see that movie on opening weekend, we actually loved seeing so many recognizable neighborhoods where they filmed, from the stairs to the Bedford Park Boulevard stop on the 4 train. It was a great movie-going experience, and Joaquin Phoenix deserved that Oscar. 👍🏽
Standout writing on this episode! Really enjoyable!
I really enjoyed this movie and Joaquin Phoenix's portrayal is phenomenal. However, i still think Heath Ledger's interpretation was better. Phoenix's portrayal was that of a crazy person, while Ledger's was that of a sociopath. In my opinion the Joker is a brilliant sociopath, he is very smart and very deliberate and not at all "crazy".
Nope, you're getting mixed up. Phoenix is more a sociopath than Ledger's, who was more like a psychopath or "crazy person"
@@rabbieburns2501 you’re both right 🤡🤣🤣
Ledger kind of ripped off Brandon lees crow. Like a lot
@@jacobfilasky2729 same can be said about the joker. Doesn’t matter what the inspiration was drawn from,It’s the performance that actually matters
@@curtiszyr pretty much all live action jokers are a disgrace to the comics
By not showing the film, that cinema allowed the shooter to WIN. The right thing to do is show the film.
Thie film reminds me of a person being on the edge mentally and literally having their "bad day" and just losing it with their coworkers and "society".
i wasn’t entertained at all watching it, gotta re-watch to see what i missed
You hope its not all in his head? Hate to break it to you, but that is the only way this makes sense. Also the production team has every intention of this not being the labelled as a definitive origin story, because of the backlash that would follow.
Interesting that Joker would be the movie to glorify violence after the plethora of revenge films that exist like, Death Wish, John Wick, Peppermint, and on and on… Some people only see what fits their own narrative.
Also, superhero movies with ongoing connected universes aren’t seemingly growing stale. That has already happened. I think fans are in denial of that fact
Super hero movies still going strong
John wick has killed 10 times more people in one movie then mr joker will probably kill in his two movies.
@@amimim69 give me the reason why wick kills. Now do joker
The shooter in that theater did not dress as the joker he just happened to have his hair dyed he said that he chose that theater because it was a packed theater
Did i hear right he had a friend who had dyed hair also since his was red and it was blue
While I infinitely appreciate that you didn't go the same way as many youtubers and pretended that John Wayne Gacy "Dressed like a clown to kill his victims", let it be clear that he wasn't a professional clown either. He'd dress as a clown to entertain children during social events and such as he was seen (or at least wanted to be seen) as a pillar of the community to a certain extent.....That photo of First Lady Rosalynn Carter and John Wayne Gacy in 78 didn't happen for no reason. Gacy wanted to be seen as something as the good guy he was not...Just like when he'd invite police officers following him to come inside and have a drink...
You really couldn’t see Romero’s moustache on a 1966 CRT television.
It wasn’t a joker movie
It was a movie called joker
I really hated this movie! Glad you all liked it, but I fkin hated it!
I had no problem with Todd Phillips directing a Joker, mainly because Todd's 1st film was a documentary about GG Allin. He spent months on tour with GG & his band, so he knows crazy.
I didn’t know that! I wonder how many showers it took to get the stink off him after that tour blech 🤢. GG wasn’t known for his good hygiene. Even his funeral was “disgusting”
Yes it was crazy when I learned he was the same guy. I was already a GG fan and seen 'Hated', but didn't even realize he was the director til like the 2nd 'Hangover'
@@ckotcher1Lol...yea, mental illness is a real thing. But hey he genuinely loved his mama just as his brother did..who Im actually hoping to see in North Jersey this July.
@@ckotcher1 i seen a photo from GG's funeral, disgusting best describes it. Todd definitely had to bath in disinfectant after that tour.
@@mikeyfn-a6684 my buddy told me about Todd Phillips directing the "Hated" documentary a little bit after "Old School" came out. I remember seeing the documentary around the time "Bum Fight" 1 or 2 was out, Hated&Bum Fights are next to each other on my DVD shelf.
I didnt love it. Maybe because i was expecting something else.
One of the best films and also one of my favorite actors in my opinion. The joker was will written well directed and a well performance.
It was filmed in Newark New Jersey, not New York City
The first Joker movie was awesome. I had high expectations, and they were exceeded. I was so excited to hear there would be a sequel, and then I found out it was a musical with lady GaGa. It made me cry 😢

Joaquin phoenix was born to play this characters , subsequently in the movie the master you can phoenix joker references . After the iconic performance of heath ledger , filling the shoes of the joker is so goddam difficult. But phoenix did a outstanding performances ; but I still believe that if they included Willem dafoe in the new elsewhere joker world it’s gonna work so well , let’s see if the joker 2 fulfill the expectations like the first one , if those who need joker 3 whit Willem dafoe
6:20-6:50 has me picturing Joaquin watching Rocky Horror while thinking about the pretzels he can't eat and weeping while singing along to Sweet Transvestite
I didn’t like it because this guy didn’t come off as someone who could ever be a matchup for Batman… Completely ridiculous to think otherwise.
This is one entertaining review! Gotta love it why am subbed to You sir. I loved him as Joker personally... A little scared of for second movie if it comes out.
I can't watch, or even finish, certain movies, unfortunately. Example: despite Phoenix being a great actor, the weight he was keeping for the movie gave me a sickening feeling. Some things in movies, doesn't even have to be a horror film, make me feel queasy to the point of passing out. I hate that because I love movies and want to make my own one day.
Joker was a total drag. Its about time people quit pretending it was a good movie. He has a boney back, we get it. Next?
This movie was successful because it was completely anti-woke. However, it also trolled the radical woke left by featuring a main character who had mental health problems who was also in love with a black women so that it actually supported some diversity too!
This movie really had the feeling of the comic "one bad day". Which was very interesting. A bad day can either turn you into a hero or a villain.
Joker reminded me of when I was younger, and movies came out that I was excited to see. It's not that it's a masterpiece, it's just a really good, unique movie, and we don't get that much anymore.
It’s weird how many people call a film unique which ripped off so many previous films but I guess for a younger audience I can see why they see it as such compared to other films at the time
Guidlines wtf ever this movie sucked and played to death and heth was the best joker ever he was the batman movie really wasn't and we have had enough of anything batman this movie sucked.

Great stand alone movie more of a psychological drama well deserved Oscar for Joaquin Phoenix
Before Benedict Cumberbatch Was Cast As Doctor Strange, Joaquin Phoenix, Sam Worthington, Johnny Depp And Keanu Reeves Were Considered For The Role
What happened to the wtf? This movie isn't that good. I saw it once and dont want to watch it again
You mean Jared Leto's cringy take on the character 😂
Just my opinion, great performance from Phoenix but its not a very good film, its empty and a complete rip off of Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy. I think Scorsese only didn't sue because De Niro got a part in it!
Extremely empty. When I hear people praising this film so much of it is head canon or projection, the audience fills in the emptiness of the movie by assigning stuff to it which simply isn’t in the actual film itself. And yeah it’s bizarre how much people praise it’s originality when it’s a complete rip off, I can only assume it’s because a younger audience never saw the movies it stole from. Tbh I even think phoenix acting whilst good is overrated. It’s like the Oscar bait trope of playing mentally ill people or drastically changing appearance automatically equals great acting.
I saw this movie in Morocco, had to have emergency surgery in West Africa (long story), in recovery I made my way to a theatre, Joker got a standing ovation despite being in Arabic subtitles. Everyone loved it. I thought it was almost too good, as in so heavy that you only watch it a couple times.
There are movies that are brilliant and worthy of watching but also hard and difficult to watch. You want a real hard movie? Find a copy of Grave of the Fireflies and try that. If you aren't weeping by the end, you're made of stone.
Goes to show that most ppl in higher positions dont know shizz
A masterpiece that has stood the test of time and always will.
.....that's actually a big Misconception. The killer himself said the joker had nothing to do with his hair .. he had just wanted to stand out.
I saw this in an IMAX showing; there were police officers at all exits, and in the lobby.
Every single news organization in the country was just waiting for an atrocity. Anything. And nothing happened. Nothing at all.
Just a superbly crafted movie that did more to explain the particular madness of the Joker than any other film.
It was the woke/radical feminist brigade attempting to disrupt the movie and ruin it for everyone. Just like the time they held a national mens rights meeting to discuss male suicide , better education for boys and male homelessness etc and hundreds of feminists gate crashed it and started spitting on the men and attacking them and attempting to trash the place
Really does my head in that the dude who directed Hangover movies made this masterpiece.
Joker is well made on some levels, but it is not a great film, let alone a masterpiece, IMO.
Happened that is a widely overrated POS, that's it! Part 2 would even be worst.
Genius movie. Joaquin Phoenix is amazing.
Indeed.
Forget all the background noise, do things with passion, with honesty, and you’ll find that the hard road is way more rewarding than the easy shortcuts everyone seems to pursue these days! This is the best movie I’ve ever seen!
Apple a day, that was also Christian Bale for the Machinist.
The moral lesson of The Joker...
...Be more nice to another.
great film that got unfair treatment from the media and was portrayed as somethings that it wasn't. For me I was more skeptical that the guy who directed the hangover movies was directing this but the movie is awesome and I'm optimistically looking forward to part 2.
Absolutely feel this sentiment though
That's the funny thing..people are skeptical about anything and everything based on pre conceived notion
Yeah, but that is all superficial white noise. It just isn't a good movie, as a whole. That's why I don't like it.
I was hoping that this would be the Joker for the Pattinson Batman. It's such a perfect pair. I at least hope we get a part three with a year one Batman.
Yes! 🤡
This Joker should never meet Batman.
@@lidiaspazzard this joker, I agree. Pattinson tho, big time. I love the deleted scene
The influence of Phillips’ time with GG Allin on this film was not as overt as I had hoped it would be, but it is definitely there, especially at the end
Is there shit flinging in Joker?
It’s funny that the fill is called a low budget film when it’s really just a normal movie.
jared leto was worse joker ever
What happened? What happened is I didn't hear about filming early enough and missed my chance to be part of the background as a NSC(Non Speaking Character)..I mean Newark ffs.. NEWARK!(I live in NJ) Oh if you want to describe NY to people just tell em to watch Taxi Driver. Also Bernie Goetz wasn't in the wrong.
Jared Leto is currently a cult-leader on his own island and acted more like the Joker off-screen for Suicide Squad than on screen, so I am glad they got him out of the project!
Is Arthur Fleck an alias Joker has used? You'd think the character's name would be Jack Napier or something
“Jack Napier” was invented for the 89 movie.
This was a shockingly good movie, but it's not really a Joker origin story so much as a movie about a guy losing his mind and choosing a clown motif. He was nothing like the "Clown Prince of Crime," but he was still pretty cool. The Batman and Gotham elements are incidental at best. Hell, I don't even know who this "Thomas Wayne" guy was supposed to be, but he definitely wasn't the canonical brilliant doctor.
I liked it, but think it's one of the more overrated movies in recent years. Not sure I would call Leto's Joker a "cyberpunk" version, I always thought of it as like a soundcloud xanax mumble rap version. Lil joke.
THE JOKER RULEZ✊🏻!
Can't Wait For The Sequel.
The SHOOTER did not dress as Joker. Thats easily disproved. I am tired of hearing that lie continue to spread. Its misinformation. Its just not true. The shooter went to that theater because many people were there. It could have been the opening night of toy story 2 he still would of done it. You guys would probably say he dressed up buzz light year. Stop the bullcrap.
The movie is excellent but not as great as people perceive it to be. Heavily uplifted by the inspiring academy Award winning performance by Joaquin Phoenix. This movie looks like it has Paul schrader written all over it, plus the Scorsese inspired new York, still it takes great mind to incorporate already existing ideas.
Cineplex theaters in Canada also wouldn't allow people dressed as Joker to attend the film I was asked to remove my makeup
Though while I agree this film is great, it really wouldn't be able to exist without Taxi Driver or King of Comedy. For a younger audience this is fantastic but if you've seen Scorsese films, this feels more like a glorified homage to Scorsese.
Remember how "dangerous" this movie was? The FBI even said to watch out for incel gunmen lmao. The FBI lost the plot long ago.
Shooting was in NJ too. I should know because I worked in NJ right after that production and I've heard some stories from state officials.
Bernie Goetz … I remember all of that time as a NY metro resident. Most NY’ers considered him a hero, or even at the very least justified. NYC was a cesspool of robberies and violence. And someone finally getting tired of it, taking out some late night punks looking to rob him … nobody cared. Most applauded it.
He did a cruel yet bad ass thing if the story is accurate. And I believe this was on the record from a witness.
He shot the guys when they asked him a lot of questions looming over him as he sat. They then asked him for money ( more like a threat ) and he started shooting them. When he stood up he reportedly said to one guy. “You don’t look so hurt” and shot him again. No deaths but that guy was paralyzed. He then checked on the other two passengers on the train cart and got off the train and walked away.
How can you pretend that this guy's the real me. This guy is a character I created. Just like the one in suicide squad. They base both on me.
This fil didnt imoress me much. It wasnt bad, but just over rated i think. Juoquin lost weight and laughed a lot. Thats it. Ledger is my joker, as insane as that seemed in 2007s casting.
Critics gatekeeping crazy and clowns defending against perceived opposition. Maybe the real Joker was the villains we made aling the way.
The thing making number two music can remind me about the thriller killer 2 that was part musical as well.
Wasn't no Batman or any other comic characters! They coulda made this film about some failed comedian that turned into a delusional lunatic & people that ain't comic book fans wouldn't know the difference....
