"Hangman hooded, softly swinging, don't close the coffin yet... I'm alive." I keep coming back to this song because those lyrics hit so hard. Masterful.
This song literally kept me from commiting suicide for 2 solid years after my divorce. I love this version most of all. Thank you guys for being so fucking awesome!
I know that you wrote your comment years ago. I don't "know" you, but I am SO thankful that you are "here" and I know how powerful a song can be, too. I'm thankful for song because I can see it's resonated with so many people like yourself. ❤
Coheed and Cambria defies all rock genres and has become its own. Other rock songs may inspire and give that adrenaline kick we need throughout the day, but songs from Coheed and Cambria? A new form of humanity were born with their songs!
They don't really defy any genres. They're a progressive rock band. They just write really good music and have backgrounds in a lot of different genres and scenes so they write something besides by-the-numbers prog.
I respect your opinion, but must disagree. Their originality and mixture of different genres in one truly creates something more unique than to simply be put in one genre and, in my opinion, places them in a higher creativity value than the average rock bands today. Sure, it's fun to listen to some good ol classic rock genres, or head bang with some heavy rock bands like Metallica or Slipknot, etc. Yet it is rare to find rock bands that not only experiment with genres and instruments foreign to their style, but also creates stories in their albums. This is what Coheed and Cambria does. Their stories became comics and memorable pieces from their albums. The Amory Wars is also rumored to be either a show or a feature film. The stories even have cult followings behind them. So in what I've said, you would then see why I must disagree and still say they defy the genres of rock by becoming their own genre with extreme moral aspects in their writing.
Arcanium69 I don't need the generic Coheed fan run-down. I am plenty well versed in the mythology and music of Coheed. But when you listen to enough music you realize where Coheed expands upon more than they innovate. Sure, when the most underground a person gets is MTV2, Coheed is probably #1, but there's a lot of music out there, and no one is really doing anything new anymore, just doing better or worse than others.
Like I said, I respect your opinion, and told you I disagreed and why I disagreed. This can be a long debate, but I have more interesting things to do. All I ask for is the similar respect I give out.
Claudio, you have been my hero since I was a little kid. seriously, you and jack white are no joke the reason that I am a musician today. I am releasing my first full length album tomorrow (and i don't imitate you, haha) and though you will probably never see this, I just wanted to tell you that you changed my life dude. Coheed has and always will be one of the best bands out there, and I can honestly say no other artist or band has had anywhere near the effect on my development as an artist. I am releasing this album because when I was 12 years old I was like "holy fuck what kind of songs are these?"
Roger Dalzell He had one hit song. Everything he's put out other than 7 nation army sounds like a 3rd grader with Down Syndrome wrote and performed it. Just because he's the only mainstream blues artist does not make him a savior by any means.
Roger Dalzell He had one hit song. Everything he's put out other than 7 nation army sounds like a 3rd grader with Down Syndrome wrote and performed it. Just because he's the only mainstream blues artist does not make him a savior by any means.
+Trey Harmon I will never understand why people are so narrow minded on music. Just because you don't enjoy the style of songs does not mean someone else might not enjoy them. Are you the end all be all judge on talent? Your ego is too large and it blinds your vision and shackles your mind. If the music is not your taste, simply say so. There is no such thing as good or bad music, there is just music. And until you can recognize that, you're going to severely limit your music taste and further narrow your mind.
Especially in the last 3-ish years. He's really gotten his shit together, singing-wise. He can hit the same high notes he did when SSTB was new and yet doesn't run out of breath anymore or go all over the place during mid-range parts. His voice is so fucking on point these days I can't believe it.
Claudio, srsly dude. You are a god. You are the reason I learned to sing in falsetto! This is by far my favorite version of this song. Please sell this. Or put it on an album as a bonus track! So much emotion here!
they've done "in keeping secrets of silent earth", in its entirety live. I'm waiting for the afterman ascension and descension in it's entirety live lol
I listened to this every day of my life until it was a full band song. And i still haven't stopped coming back to this. THIS is your greatest creation Claudio. Please prove me wrong in 2020-2021
How in the hell could anyone thumbs down this video?!? This is just pure fucking magic captured on video. I believe I've just had a religious experience.
I think that he probably has Tile in his kitchen, and the sound bouncing off the tile will give the acoustic the twangy and sharp sound that this song really needs, where if you go to Atlas, the living room with the wide open space gives that echo and reverb that THAT song needs, honestly just really good choices of stages that really give the songs more depth then a studio can make.
Well if you look, in this video he is facing his Kitchen, and his Microphone is probably in his Kitchen also. In Atlas he is facing perpendicular to the Kitchen, in that big open area. That little of a change can make the sound pickup on a Microphone vary quite a bit. That's what I was getting at.
Ive been listening to this song for 4 years?! Insane to believe its been that long since you made this video. Your music will always be timeless to me!
This is gonna draw some flack, but I think the Afterman albums are my favorite. I think they showed their evolution and growth as a band. The concept is amazing and the lyrics are really only matched by Good Apollo vol. 1. The music is so polished and well crafted. Emotional and raw with a technical precision unmatched by many other bands. Children of the Fence rejoice in the coming of your lord Claudio!
No disrespect to the album version, but this is the ultimate version of this song. I've said it since they dropped this before the album. His delivery, the clarity of the one guitar. Amazed even now
music, I realized that there are ways to vent into songs, stories, and many other things. Coheed and Cambria brought me out of the darkest place I've been, got me back into my music, and quite literally saved my life. Thanks guys, you've been the biggest inspiration in the world for me, never stop making music.
Hearing this through my headphones for the first time made me smile, even though the lyrics stirred emotions that shouldn't have. Hearing Claudio's unfiltered voice and his passion and technique was something I didn't know I needed. Thank you for motivating me to get back into music. I give you guys all the best wishes.
i keep coming back to this song. my partner introduced me to coheed and cambria when we started dating over three years ago. this was the first song he showed me, and it completely changed me. i had never heard something like this before, and i just played it on repeat over and over. the vocals are just so beautiful and passionate, combined with the masterful guitar work just makes this song a complete masterpiece. i love his unique pronunciations and i just find myself drawn back to this song time and time again.
The sheer simplistic beauty of this video is that it is Claudio, and a guitar. he lets the song speak for itself and it sounds amazing. having heard both the studio version and this i must say i feel that this is my favorite because there is nothing more than whats right there. its like the humble jedi narwhal... its simplistic but fearful in its awe inspiring grace and power.
Why there are 55 dislikes is as confusing as string theory to me. This is music done right, open your ears people! So fresh, so new, so different and yet that classic C&C sound is still there. From Second Stage to Ascension, thank you C&C for giving the world, and me, music with depth.
+Kyle Smith But string theory isnt difficult to grasp. That and his voice may get on the nerves of some people. A large portion of the people i show this band to cant stand his voice. Me? I think its fine i thinks hes awesome at singing, but if you find this in the random suggested videos and you click on it it may not be your thing. thats it really
Been listening to them since I was 11, when my brother showed me "once upon your dead body" in the car one day and I brushed it off as a pretty catchy song, but then I found myself going crazy, trying to search for them and then I found the rest of their albums (2011 at the time) and I actually can't express my love for Coheed since those days. Claudio's voice, with Travis' guitar playing, josh's drumming style, and Zach/Michael's bass riffs. They're all so particular, different in their own ways, yet they blend together SO perfectly. And plus they're SO tight live. Huge fan, and I really hope to see them in concert someday
My situation was really similar. My older brother listened to them, I'd pass by his room and usually dislike hearing it. One day I heard the part in crossing the frame he sings "casting quarters in to wells that hold our dreams" and it really stuck in my head, but I didnt know what song or album, so i downloaded the 3 that were out at the time and tried so hard to find it. and really fell in love while searching, then listening album after album everyday on the bus ride to school and back. I have so much emotional attatchment to each song
These acoustic versions of songs are so, so good. Hopefully there's an opportunity to release a full acoustic album with things like this and Claudio's Atlas performance.
11 years ago?!?! Goddamn im old. I swear it feels like only 3 years ago since when I first saw this gem of a song/video when it was released lol I need a drink
I saw them and met them at the Irvine, CA stop of the Uproar Music festival. They where amazing! Ended up going to the San Diego stop as well lol! Front row seats didn't hurt either! great band and love this song! Very powerful lyrics!
Where's our solo Claudio acoustic album? Sentry the Defiant, Hello, The Light and the Glass, Half Measures, Run Gunner Recall...the things this man can do with his voice and an acoustic guitar...
i would pay as much money as i needed for an all acoustic album from you guys.i have every album, even the prize fighter ones. coheed and cambria is my favorite band ever. period.
I just want to say thank you to the parents the band members of Coheed and Cambria. Thank you for bearing these children that create some of the most awesome music that exists today! Because of you, we have this! Thank you.
One of the last conversations I ever had with someone who was closer to me than my own brother was when he shared this song and we were so excited for the album release. He soon after ran off to another state to escape his shit home life and we lost touch. I don't even know what became of him. 12 years ago? I'm not crying, you're crying. Miss you kiddo. 💜
This is probably one of my new favourite songs. I absolutely love it. Keep on rocking Claudio and the rest of the gang, you're making music today better!
Sends a shiver down my spine :) Beautiful. Coheed are brilliant for creating so much emotional into a song. Great job on the album guys, hope to see you live again soon!
Claudio. I love your music, however this one. Sentry The Defiant in both ways played is amazing. I've been playing guitar for 14 years and your music has inspired me to get back into writing and singing. Thank you. Keep rocking man. Cant wait to see more music you make.
2021. Still crying. Still an absolute killer song. And Claudio's voice will NEVER get old ..
And still my favorite version of this one. Would love to get an acoustic/B-sides album!
It will never lol
F’real this might be my favorite of everything they’ve done.
This song is timeless

"Hangman hooded, softly swinging, don't close the coffin yet...

Claudio's voice sounds so beautiful in this video this is by far THE best version of Sentry The Defiant.
I'll forever love this band. Phenomenal song. Still here from the early days.

When he sings parts of the verse that resonate from the acoustic it sends shivers. "Then one day I grew too old" every time.
In my opinion, Claudio's voice and playing are so much better live than in studio.

I don't understand, how somebody can be so talented, with only his voice and a guitar...
This is probably one of my new favourite songs. I absolutely love it. Keep on rocking Claudio and the rest of the gang, you're making music today better!
this is why i love coheed always coming out with the best music so deep and awesome. cant wait to see this live.
Just watched this 13 times in a row on auto-replay. About an hour later, still listening. GREAT TRACK GUYS!
