When money was tight, I would go to Walmart for new tires. That ended when the last set I bought leaked air. I finally got so fed up with Walmart saying nothing was wrong I took my car to Discount Tire who found out the wheels were not cleaned on the inside and the tires were not sealing correctly to the wheels. Not only did Discount Tire perform this and fixed the problem but they did not charge me! Needless to say the ONLY place my family now buys tires is from Discount Tire. Four sets were earned by their great service to us!

Strangely, of the 3 places I worked as a lube tech, Wal-Mart actually had the fewest incidents. One place was an independent lube shop that put 5w-30 in everything regardless of the recommended viscosity. The worst was an actual ford dealership. Walmart had kids straight out of high school but they were at least interested in learning about cars and we had some older, experienced techs there to make sure they didn't cause a disaster. The ford dealership hired anyone dumb enough to apply there. One time the damn roofers drilled into the oil dispenser pipeline and filled a car's interior with several inches of oil.

Once, he said, he blew a customers motor when he did a oil & filter change, removed the old filter, but he didn't notice the filter seal was still stuck to the motor, and double-stacked the new filter on top of it. It's not rocket science, but a person still has to have some mechanical aptitude, training, and a good work ethic to do what to some would seem to be an easy task.

An ASE-Certified dealership mechanic makes $45 an hour where I live. Yet customers expect a service for $29 including oil and filter. By the time the car is racked, all fluids checked, and it is given a once-over, the technician is in for about forty minutes. Check your local repair shop’s hourly rates and do the math. The day before we went on a ski trip we took our 2021 4Runner to Jiffy lube… we were told they spilt oil all over our skid plate and told us that if we see oil drippings on our garage floor not to worry. When we woke to leave on our trip there was oil on the floor like they said. However, the oil maintenance light never shut off… weird. Maybe they didn’t reset it? As we were climbing up a mountain the 4Runner was making some weird sounds. Once we reached the bottom it locked up and we lost power. Got out to look and the engine was raining oil and the dip stick was dry. Jiffy lube double gasketed the oil filter. All employees who touched our car were fired and jiffy lube paid for a brand new engine. $21k later we have a new engine. Took them 2 1/2 weeks.

I installed fumoto quick drain plugs and skid plates on the the trucks that don’t require removal for oil changes and can get them done in under 30 minutes myself. My local Ford dealer does oil changes for $39.95 after 2 pm any make or model. They actually go through the invoice showing what they did and check the oil level while you stand there. For that amount of money why would anyone crawl under a car. Did I mention they rotate the tires also?

I used to trust my local Midas til last year. I had A/C service done, $500 I was so happy to have it fixed. 24 hours later as I was exciting a freeway, white smoke came out of the engine.
I parked and had it towed to Firestone (since Midas was closed). My transmission fluid was leaking. The Firestone mechanic asks me if I was A/C service recently done because one of the hoses was not clamped in properly. That had caused my transmission fluid leak. They fixed it ($500) and I drive over to Midas to explain and request a refund.
The manager was more upset that a competitor would oust them then resolving their mistake. He said he would call me after talking with the Firestone manager and I never heard back. …in the mid 90’s, I was in Kirksville, MO and needed an oil change. As a college student at the time, needed it done cheap before I drove back home to GA. Took it to Walmart and paid the $15 they charged at the time. Got home late the next day and discovered that all my oil had leaked out and was all over my parent’s driveway! Turns out they stripped the threads of the oil pan and plug! The car later developed a knock that I think was caused from it running low on oil from that incident. I decided at the time that even I could do a better job than that, and that’s when I decided to start doing my own car work. I’m a fairly decent “shade tree” mechanic these days with engine & transmission swaps under my belt, as well as getting my last 2 daily driver cars over 200K miles with doing all their maintenance and service myself! Oh, and the Walmart back in GA refunded my $15 I paid the one in MO for the oil change…that’s the only compensation I was ever offered… 😡

    • @crisnmaryfam7344

A Buick Enclave is a "Badge engineered" Chevrolet Traverse. Same Engine and Transmission. Slightly different body work and a different badge but the mechanicals are all GM / Chevy. learn a bit about cars youll understand. Acura.. is just Honda. Lexus is just Toyota.. Buick.. is just GM.
"In the automotive industry, rebadging is a form of market segmentation used by automobile manufacturers around the world. To allow for product differentiation without designing or engineering a new model or brand (at high cost or risk), a manufacturer creates a distinct automobile by applying a new "badge" or trademark (brand, logo, or manufacturer's name/make/marque) to an existing product line.[1][2]
Rebadging is also known as rebranding and badge engineering; the latter is an intentionally ironic misnomer in that little or no actual engineering takes place.[3][4] The term originated with the practice of replacing an automobile's emblems to create an ostensibly new model sold by a different maker. Changes may be confined to swapping badges and emblems, or may encompass minor styling differences, as with cosmetic changes to headlights, taillights, front and rear fascias, and even outer body skins. More extreme examples involve differing engines and drivetrains. The objective is "to spread the huge development costs of a new vehicle over as many cars as possible".[5] An example is General Motors' rebadging of the Camaro as the Firebird, a successful model from the 1960s through to the 2000s.[6] In most cases, consumers are interested in each brand's focus "on the unique elements of styling and driving characteristics".[5] Some cars would not be marketed without the cost savings that are obtained from this practice, and carmakers can develop many "different models - all wearing different badges - off the one platform

You can get 5 quartz of full synthetic for a $20 now, even cheaper at Costco. But I would worry about what oil filter they put in if they even changed it at all. What oil filter you use makes a big difference in the amount of contamination circiling around in your oil which directly impacts wear and tear on the engine regardless of what brand oil you use. Same for air filters and the most expensive is often not the best at keeping wear and tear down on the engine.

Change the plugs if need be then drive it to burn off any remaining oil. With out specific damages which the story is omitting I’m calling bs the engine was blown. That’s a Chevy equinox with a known engine piston ring problem that causes excessive oil consumption. I said "you've never seen someone do this before I take it?"

True! But since we buy my own oil and filter. The place I go to the guy I know he change my oil and filter right there with me watching an talking to him. He let all the oil drop out and he pour all the oil in there with a half of quart since my car takes 5.5 quarts. So I know what oil and filter is on there. I could change it myself but no point the guy charges me $20 on top me buying my own oil and filter. $20 dollars ain't gone hurt me. Most of these folks who get oil changes don't know how to check oil.

A girlfriend of mine took her Lincoln to the Lincoln dealer, where she bought the car for an oil change. They did the same thing. Put in new oil but hadn't drained the old oil. Like this lady, the engine blew up. The dealer put in a new engine and gave her a loaner to drive. But it still was inconvenient for her.

I had a similar thing happen at a Honda dealership. I had a brand new Honda and I went to the dealership for the first oil change. Normally I would either do it myself or go to a local garage for that, but the first oil change was free at the dealership. When they were done, I couldn't have been more than a few hundred feet down the road and the oil light came on. Immediately turned around and went back. They had drained the oil and never filled it ... in my case, rather than overfilling it, the car was running without oil. I'm just thankful I noticed the oil light when I did before it was too late, I could have easily missed it. Of course, they refunded me for the service and gave me a few freebies. I didn't have the car long enough to know if it had a long term impact, it was totaled a few years later in a not at fault accident.

A Buick Enclave is a "Badge engineered" Chevrolet Traverse. Same Engine and Transmission. Slightly different body work and a different badge but the mechanicals are all GM / Chevy
In the automotive industry, rebadging is a form of market segmentation used by automobile manufacturers around the world.

I’m currently working in TLE at Walmart, and I have heard some horror stories from people who were fired for tomfoolery!
At my store if someone makes a complaint our manager makes a claim ASAP and they pay for it right then and there!
I’m so sorry her car was messed up, and what took so long for management not to check the cameras?
Even though I work there I make sure to do my job right every time, because I treat peoples cars like my own.
But, since we can’t work on our own cars there I do my own oil changes outside of work, I wouldn’t trust some of my coworkers to touch my car!

When I have a new car, I always have the oil changed and fluids serviced at the manufacturers selling dealerships while under the factory warranty. It may cost a little more but they keep records online, and report to Carfax your service. If there is a problem during the warranty, you can easily prove all factory services were completed according to the factory maintenance schedule at a manufacturers selling dealership. Some manufacturers say to people the service was not completed at the intervals recommended by the manufacturer or not completed by a factory trained technician, and deny the repair under the warranty. To have the service completed by a manufacturers dealership protects you when you have an active manufacturers warranty on the vehicle. By having the service done this way, the manufacturer never has declined or denied warranty services for any of my vehicles.

A good friend of mine used to work at a Walmart auto shop. Every time we met up he had a new story of co-worker incompetence and one of the techs was a helicopter mechanic (I can only guess why he was changing oil at Walmart), his nickname was Scary Terry. One customer had the engine in his new truck seize because the oil filter fell off.

People go for cheap oil changes at fast lube places and some of them forget to even put oil back in after draining. I don't mind the 300 to 500 for my cars as they do an intensive checkup of everything.

Retired mechanic here. A car is the most, or second most expensive thing most people own. Modern cars have the potential to last 200,000 miles or longer. People choosing where take their car for maintenance based on how cheap and how quick the service is on that day get the results they deserve. Quick oil change places use inferior filters, overtighten and strip drain plugs or leave them loose, and often use inferior oil that isn't what's advertised. Find a shop that specializes in your make, or at least your type of vehicle (Japanese, European etc) and uses factory or OEM filters. Synthetic oil is worth the money over the long haul. And finally, check the level periodically between services, say every month or 1000 miles, as the red oil light means the engine is OUT and getting damaged NOW.
