  • Averting a planned strike at midnight, the union representing nearly 12,000 Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) workers announced a last-minute framework settlement on Thursday evening, avoiding a crippling shutdown of buses, streetcars and subway trains.
"This is a fair deal that is affordable to the TTC and respectful of the important work the 11,500 members of ATU Local 113 do every day,” said in an official statement.”
The main sticking points for the union had been job security and benefits for active members and pensioners. The union says it will continue to work through the details to arrive at a fair and reasonable contract.
Details of the deal are not being released with the settlement still needing to be ratified by union members and the TTC board.
For commuters, full TTC services will proceed as planned on Friday.

Media needs to learn how contracts work. No deal has been made other than to an agreement to keep negotiating without a strike. The members never even voted on them doing that (giving them more time) and it's a common tactic in negotiating union contracts.
Here's reality. The ttc workers voted to strike. The ttc union stewards and union representative near strike time decide to negotiate in good faith and give them more time to negotiate b4 strike (going against its own members who voted strike 12 am). It's a very common tactic union's use to avoid actually striking and shouldn't be legal imo. I've had it happen to me twice from the steelworkers and we voted to strike. Why should 4 ppl get to throw that vote away cause of bargaining in good faith? Now I'm not saying it's 4 ppl simply speaking of my situation.
The union tries to scare the employer, the union folds and looks weak. Now I'm sure the ttc workers will get a decent deal cause they have good jobs period. However had they actually g9ne on strike they would have received an ever better offer. They failed to use their power, an injunction would have forced them back to work by Monday but still, they lost their power. The biggest thing is the employer fully knows of this tactic and played them in this situation. Of course they are gonna call their bluff cause unions bluff too much. They have played this perfectly, not negotiating like the deadline means anything. Why negotiate in good faith when they are bluffing and you don't have to. Employers will strong-arm you. You have to actually strike and then amazingly 30 minutes on strike oh look the employer has a new offer for you to vote to ratify. They had it the whole time of course but you'll never see that contract.

You are totally right they folded quickly, why wait down to the closing hour to negotiate to begin with, clearly the employer didn’t care weeks ago, so they should have still strike and get demands meet and a better deal, thats what a protest is about, you dont just settle right away, you have to show strength when the balls in your court
