So late to comment on this, but I still can't believe that SOR wandered in a whole panel of dark green grass plus another whole panel of light green grass and that wasn't worth the 20cm beaten margin for the horse whose stride became unbalanced for the entriety of the last 150m. So, yeah, I'm a big fan of Anamoe, with an average barrier he'd have won the Golden Slipper and Blue Diamond, too.
Cannot be sure of the outcome but leaning towards Anamoe being unlucky - bumped at crucial stage, head up at the winning post instead of down and carpark barrier. If you swap runs between 1 & 2, Anamoe arguably wins the race by 2 lengths but such is racing. Fair to say though that Anamoe is probably the most consistent junior horse at the top level we've had for a long time. If he could draw a barrier, you'd argue he should have won Golden Slipper, should have won Golden Rose and he's gone down a mm in the cox plate as a 3 year old. I hope he targets the triple crown in the Autumn but he'll likely be set for QEII then head to Europe/Middle East. Also, there's nothing European about State of Rest's pedigree for all those who crap on about European horses being infinitely better at middle distance. Very Australian father and US mother
State of Rest's dominant win in the Prince of Wales reinforces the quality of this edition of the Cox Plate. Take nothing away from the winner, but Anamoe and Verry Elleegant may have been a little unlucky. VE went on to win The Cup brilliantly and Anamoe recorded a colossal win in the Rosehill Guineas the following Autumn. Godolphin currently intend to bring Anamoe back in the Spring for another tilt at the Cox Plate.

By no means am i saying that Lane should have ridden her into traffic at the last bend, my point is he never should have been there in the first place. Lane should have pushed forward and kept VE closer to the leaders. She had plenty in the tank and was gaining in the last 100M, another 100-200M and the race is hers. Best horse in the race by a long shot. James Mcdonald rode her extremely well in the Ranvet Stakes over 2000, kept her closer to the leader and powered over the line. Can safely say that VE loses the Ranvet Stakes if she was ridden like Damien Lane did in the Cox Plate.

With VE I don’t think she’s suited to the tricky Mooney Valley course the bigger tracks suit her better . She may also be on the decline .

Agree with pretty much all of that, not sure about the Flemington aspect but you make a great point about the age allowance. 7kg (just over 15lb) is a massive weight pull considering the two horses in question are only separated by a little over 7 month.

State Of Rest wins the Cox Plate after the protest was dismissed. But we can only wonder what the result was if Gold Trip and Zaaki were in the race. Go and look at the form of State Of Rest...its Timeform rating was 116 going into the Cox Plate...that 116 was achieved in a weak G1 in the USA. The horse is a Listed/Group 3 horse in Europe. It's time lots of people in Australia woke up and realised the state of Australian racing at 1600m+. Would State Of Rest have won a Cox Plate in the 1990s....no way...not even in the early to mid-2000s. Anyway well done State Of Rest and well done to trainer Joseph O'Brien. Good ride by Johnny Allen too.

Williams has only himself to blame. He was beaten by a better world rated jockey. John Allen's talent is downplayed by the media...He always has been a champion but his weight has been against him. He has incredible strength to get the best out of his horse and that is what he did to win the Cox Plate....just check out the effort he put in. My namesake and I win on him all the time..he is the best rider in Australia.
Pity that the protest was dismissed, thought Anamoe was clearly the better horse and 99% won that without the interference. Still... State of Rest is a nice horse, but another second stringer coming out here and winning our big race at 10f. I love the Euro horses coming out here but we have a big lack of depth from a mile up that is becoming more and more obvious every year.

He wasn’t unfairly weighted at all , being a Northern Hemisphere 3 year old he was older and more mature than the Southern Hemisphere 3 year old which is actually not yet a 3year old .

Compare Anamoe in this Cox Plate to todays , ridden too far back in this one, but you can tell how hes grown and matured and todays race was all over the minute Jmac had him sitting 4th, the tragedy beaten was Im Thunderstruck can't work out why he was ridden that far back, another 30mtrs he wins, so if they were there instructions they got it wrong, but if not what a slaughter of a ride, should have been about 2-3 lengths closer but well done Anamoe 4 G1s this prep or 3 who cares but he is the best WFA horse from 1400-2000m in Aust, apparently his career is now going to take on the world, in Dubai then Miserable land , but a great race for all the fuckwits that bagged me about Zaaki being a cat, theres your answer he won a Doomb Cup a stupid All Star Mile and beat Cascadian in the MacKinnon. Anamoe was 7 kg lighter and 6 months younger. If they met in next year's Cox Plate, State of Rest would belt it

Still an Australian win, I can say, since the sire of State of Rest is Starspangledbanner, which is also an Aussie. By the way, what kind of opinion would many have upon the rejected protest?
A simple opinion. Anamoe wins, lost a half head and wasn't given a fair sprint to the line.
Commendable for the stewards not to buckle under pressure ..To much talking from the pocket

Anamoe has to get this. Taken far off his sprint to the line, that interference has to cost him at least the half head to win and likely much more.
Was a genuine 50/50 imo, i say this while having some money on Anamoe, but when its 50/50 I think you have to stick with the outcome on the post

Yep, firmly believe he would have, wont get a better chance than this year against a field this weak next year I wouldn't think. Still, if he wins the MC it was definitely the right call given the prize money.

He’s won over 3600 over here on a track with an 1100m long straight.

He wasn’t unfairly weighted at all , being a Northern Hemisphere 3 year old he was older and more mature than the Southern Hemisphere 3 year old which is actually not yet a 3year old .

Mooney valley in a big group1 with a lane that everyone wants to get to your always gonna get some contact . Unless stewards set out clear defining rules that are set in stone as opposed to interpretation by 3 guys in a room after a race .

Frankel would have beaten Winx 6-8L, giving her whatever weight.Thats what he does to average Group 1 horses.
On best times recorded Winx beats Frankel by about 15-20 lengths. She would've murdered him.

Its all subjective Winx has a winning straight record that cant be touched but Frankel never loss but only ran 14 times and to be honest the field was tiny and no Zaaki but the Irish Ponies can always stay beyond 2000 really well.

we had very elleegant 1st,state of rest 2nd,anamoe 3rd,mo'unga 4th and would have easily gone that way had VE not been ridden so poorly. well done to State of rest :)

Compare Anamoe in this Cox Plate to todays , ridden too far back in this one, but you can tell how hes grown and matured and todays race was all over the minute Jmac had him sitting 4th, the tragedy beaten was Im Thunderstruck can't work out why he was ridden that far back, another 30mtrs he wins, so if they were there instructions they got it wrong, but if not what a slaughter of a ride, should have been about 2-3 lengths closer but well done Anamoe 4 G1s this prep or 3 who cares but he is the best WFA horse from 1400-2000m in Aust, apparently his career is now going to take on the world, in Dubai then Miserable land , but a great race for all the fuckwits that bagged me about Zaaki being a cat, theres your answer he won a Doomb Cup a stupid All Star Mile and beat Cascadian in the MacKinnon. Retire old boy. But Im Thunderstruck just keeps losing big races due to his racing pattern , I mean $8m in the bank is great but really he should have won the Cox Plate but Anamoe was just ridden perfect by Jmac so well done, the Redoutes Choice blood still lives on in another Cox Plate Champion.

I have absolutely no complaint with him winning the derby, unlike the Cox Plate, he didn't interfere with the 2nd place horses run to the line (Alegron), he earnt that win and rode Hitotsu to perfection, I have absolutely no quarrels there.
Why does it even matter he's 35th (the correction being 36th as of the 31 of October) in the world? Craig Williams is 32nd in the world anyway, to what relevance does this even have? Sure, he's talented, so is any G1 jockey. The irony is incredible as this moot point is so frivolous in nature.
