    This and the front end install are such helpful videos! Mechanics want $800 to install the front and rear, with the help of these videos I feel confident to do it on my own, thanks for posting this!

      I was a little apprehensive about doing it myself and I am so glad I didn't after finishing the job. There are a few headaches along the way but it really isn't that hard!

      I did all four on my 4Runner, very straight forward.
      I did run into trouble with the front passenger side and had to cut the nut off.

    Great video. Appreciate that disclaimer about following your instructions at the beginning but this was all I watched! The only difference I found helpful was to use the jack to compress the new shock. Also torque spec is 30 at top and 72 ft pds on the bottom. The shocks are easy peasy!

    Dude, just watched this and your other video on the front Bilstein install. Super detailed, step by step, with a bunch of tips here and there. I'm going to be putting Bilstein front and back (coilover for front, rear shock with reservoir for rear) on my 4runner and will be using these videos from start to finish! (+/- a few details because of slightly different hardware) Thanks for the great content.

      in the beginning I was a little impatient with the directions you gave, however after doing this exact install, I am grateful that you did this and the other video that details the front install. You do a really great job of explaining and detailing the process. Out of all the videos available on U tube yours is by far the best and easiest to follow along with. Thanks for being patient and thorough in your explanations and the work that your doing.
      Much appreciated! Thanks
      Jay T.

      It was as tedious to make as it is to watch, but I felt like other videos skip steps that are assumed to be easy and I wanted to be complete. Thanks for the positive feedback!

      Mike C honestly, there are so many videos out there that assume that the viewers know all the small details of an install or improvement that people are looking up/searching for online. They fail to make the connection that the people who are looking to RUclips to walk them through an install, are (usually) the people who need the extra details and tips on how to safely and appropriately do the job that they want to get done. You don’t leave anything out and it is exactly what I think RUclips “how to” install videos should be. Keep up the awesome work. Super appreciated and want to make sure you know it.

    Very informative. Makes it look like a relatively easy install. My only criticism is the sunlight flashing on the camera lens over and over. The lighting made it a little difficult to see what was going on.

    Good video, thanks! One helpful hint. The old shocks you have to hold the center with open box wrench at the top as in the video to loosen. The 5100s you do not tighten this way, you need an allen wrench to hold the center as you tighten with wrench or it’ll just spin.

    • @14erGuy
      @14erGuy 2 года назад +1

      Thanks for the tip, however in looking at my 4R and the one in the video, I don't see any way to get an allen wrench in there. There is barely enough clearance to get an open-end box wrench in there, no way could I get an allen key in on top of that point. My 4R is a 2011, but the shock mount looks nearly identical to what this guy is showing. There is only a sliver of clearance to get a wrench in from the side.

    For the sake of injury, read the manual to your floor jack. They are not designed for long term sustained weight. Lift, place stands, remove jack. Throw a wheel under the vehicle if you want for security

    • @arkbama6
      @arkbama6 3 года назад +4

      Derek D I use the jack and then drop onto 2 stands and leave the jack in place with slight pressure for extra security.

    I have a one inch block and an add a leaf installed in the rear and was suggested to install 5100s which I bought. Do I need to remove anything to make it stay level with the front or will it just sit right because it’s already technically lifted a couple inches? The point of the install was to have a shock that doesn’t bottom out and make for a smoother ride. Thanks.

    My 5th Gen Bilstein 5100 show the washer cups face the other direction. There's also another washer that goes between the bottom bushing and frame. Also, the new top nut is an 18 mm. Maybe they changed things? Thanks for the video.

    Thanks for the vid. Got these installed on my Gx with the help of your video. I know the top bolt on the shock is supposed to be 30 ft lb, but it’s hard to estimate since a torque wrench socket won’t fit in that tight space. About how much did you compress the bushing and how many threads are showing? I compressed the bushings a lot and there’s about 5/6 threads showing, do you think I torqued them too tight?

    • @DrivenCompanion
      @DrivenCompanion  3 года назад +1

      Stays the same unless you get a rear spacer. The spacer will provide the lift as long as you have a different shock to provide for the added travel.

      Josh McFarland use the jack that came with your 4runner and lift the axle. Use that other floor jack to compress the shock and slide onto the lower post. Take care not to bind up the boot.
