Brilliant. These "looking in the mirror" videos or, "coming to deep root realization" videos are what people need. They are real. You do them well with a punkrock attitude which, I personally relate with easily. Your integrity resonates in them. In truth, it really doesn't matter how much money you make if you just piss money away on negligent holes in your lifestyle. Keep it real and keep these coming. ~an American in Korea 🇰🇷
I'm 40 now, and over the years we have had some really hard times and have managed to scrap together what we could when we didn't have much. Rock bottom teaches a lot of lessons as long as you learn from them! I'm now learning shopify to give my kids a better life. They deserve more. Thanks Chris!
You are a genuine good person, and you don't see that everyday. I'm at the stage that I don't really watch courses anymore, but will give you a like for support.
Sometimes i believe once we embrace were we are and appreciate everything around us that we can be truly satisfied. I stopped comparing myself to people, uninstalled instagram, stopped watching tech gadget videos, or any sort of tech market accounts whatsoever, and i just live in the moment. I also stopped going to coffeshops to "work" knowing i can get frustrated in the comfort of my house, making coffee thats not overpriced and bland. instead after work i just go to the park , do some jogging and play some videogames, and stopped caring about what people want of should be doing. That alone improved my mental health , saved a lot of money, and my FOMO is almost non existant. Live the life the way you want. Do not live everyone elses.
Having just gotten an software job in February I have been trying my hardest to save 40% or more and stave off lifestyle inflation. The example of going out to eat while having food at the house resonates with me soooo much. I’m trying to eat at home and eat healthier and grow my own food so if it goes bad it’s not too large of a deal.
If you want to get even better with the food situation, add a can of brown beans to your taco meat. It enhances the texture, effectively doubles the serving and adds fiber. If you want to go next level mix your own spices for the meat. It'll save you money and you can mix it to your tastes. Expand this out to your other recipes and you'll find other ways to save.
Love your content Chris. What's interesting about this particular video is it goes to show how customer behaviour changes throughout society. People are more careful with their spendings, causing the economy to be more lively, etc. This causes the already starting crisis to spiral faster and in a recursive fashion.
With an electric kettle, making tea would be even more convenient. They don't cost a lot, and if you use them frequently, they'll pay off their cost soon provided you avoid buying tea at Starbucks. May also be worthwhile to buy a bunch of meat in bulk from Costco and freeze it, so that whenever dinner needs to be made, take out the meat the day before (put it in the fridge) and you're ready to cook. Ground beef can actually be pretty cost-efficient if you buy in bulk, and cook chili or something similar.
being from third world country that was my life style from the start. You don't realize how wasteful people are in developed countries. Now working as SWE in Netherlands I have so much money I don't know where to spend
The whole $3 on coffee thing is pretty absurd though - if you enjoy it, $3 for coffee is worth it. The margins really don’t matter as much - it’s kinda like programming. It’s the big picture that matters
I think only those who make enough money waste it like so. I am ordering takeout so many times during the week when I could just buy food from my local store. Time to start being clever with my money!
Now that I can work remote as a software engineer, I just moved to Thailand. In America normal breakfasts would cost $20-30 if I went out. In Thailand my breakfasts are $2-5. My house mortgage before was like $3,400 and I almost stayed in America and started a new rent at $2,400 but glad I got a nice condo for $700 in Thailand. Everything in America got crazy expensive with inflation, I just left the country all together after buying a digital nomad Visa. For 2 months cost of living in my old house I can stay 1 year in Thailand with a better quality of life.
@@logato7128 I'm going to rent for a year and then buy probably next year. I can buy a nice condo with beach view for $30-100k. I need to setup a Thai business and put it under the business.
Yeah but eventually companies are going to look at all these talented software developers around the world who are willing/able to work for less the salaries are just going to go down I would think.

@@revisionfour Yeah that sounds like LinkedIn for sure, I'm just saying if market economics means anything then eventually it'll reach some sort of equilibrium where the salaries will go down
It's surprising where you can make cuts. Once you start with just a couple, other opportunities present themselves. My mother grew up during really hard times and nothing was wasted. From my last job I would rescue common materials I could easily repurpose.
I always see people eat out like everyday. Some even multiple times and I am wondering if they are either infinitely rich or don't care about money at all
When I was a coder, I had to save every penny to hold me over till the next temp job. Most of my contracts were six months, once a year. And finished early in five months. With relocation costs on my dime. It was good training for have nothing and be happy. I only ever slept on air mattresses, because I didn't want to move a bed. Most of my furniture was Uhaul boxes I never unpacked(medium/small sized), and tv dinner tables. The fan on the PSU goes out, and I buy a $10 walmart fan instead of a $40 PSU. Renting cheaper apartments on the not as nice sides of town. Saving $200 a month, when you have no income for six plus months adds up. Had I known in advance that my life would be so transitory, I would have gotten an RV. That's $1K a year I wouldn't have spent on Uhauls. Although internet options in those days were shady at best. 14.4K connection rates for your 56K modem (limited to 52K by law). Looking for work on that speed was rough, as only one phone line meant you had to be offline from 8am to 5pm so job prospects could call you. And near your phone to answer it. A full time job of $0 per hour.
Great Video Chris. If you want some really interesting reading, check out the Mr Money Moustache blog. Dude breaks personal finance down to the absolute fundamentals, it's like pulling the veil from over your eyes.
Legitimately the only programmer on youtube who is not sugar coating everything and keeping it real. Keep up the work!

Happiness and money are 2 different things. Whenever I said money does buy happiness I actually was miserable.

lifestyle inflation, real problem
Start small. Even if you just don't buy food you're not going to eat, you're already ahead.

good to be self aware. I know people who insist they're doing just fine yet spend like they have a money faucet that never shuts off (they don't)
Basically, if you had a robot butler - it would solve almost all of your problems. Same here.
Great advice Chris. It is good to hear your advice on these matters. I agree just taking small steps can do so much.

So you could buy roughly 5 condos, one in each of the popular locals for about half of a house in the US

As someone who has a somewhat good coffee machine at home, paying $4 for a coffee is outrageous.
When I got paid, I am thinking what I can buy with it. And then there are others, who are thinking how I can get more out of this $1.
$1 million in 40 years won’t even buy you a coffee
