I agree, ChatGPT isn't going to replace programmers. It helps programmers. The ones who should be afraid are Google and Stackoverflow, because it's already more helpful than Stackoverflow lol.
Hay, been watching your videos for years, they are quite good, and I remember watching a video a few months back on senior developers and a rant on bootcamp developers, you would voice over a video of walking down some road with green forest on the side, even other videos on things like old python libraries, seems to be gone. Why remove those old videos, I really liked the takes.
what I learned is that you have to prompt it once and not use its previous solution to modify it since it can add something which messes up something else or dependencies . Something else I learned is that you can plan first yourself lets say on notepad then use that plan as your most well paraphrased prompt for the Ai . infact the AI can help you plan you can ask it what should be my plan in order to create x , and keep iterating on only the plan until you get the best one . then use this plan to generate the code . Iam going to make a vid about this soon .
I mostly use ChatGPT if I want to learn more on a topic that I don’t know much about and get nice, consolidated info which is usually ‘good enough’ for what I’m trying to do. For now for me its really just a nice backup in case google doesn’t get me what I need. As soon as this stuff gets to a level where it’s able to be scaled and adopted securely by companies to use their data then things are really going to change.
Rofl, once I heard you say "a game you can jump in jump out of" I instantly thought of rocket league, Champ here! Gamedev tv has a lot of great UE tutorials. Blueprints are pretty cool. Totally agree with early adopting AI, it's going to be absolutely everywhere in the future, school kids are already teaching themselves how to use it. If you can use it well it's a massive force multiplier, I use it to rubber duck and to check my code amongst other things. As Two minute papers says, it's only a paper or two until these NLPs are doing things we can't comprehend, I think it's inevitable.
Hey Chris, reaching out from a land far away, more of your videos would be nice to watch. Love the fact that it is centered so much on present day reality. Quick one, wouldve liked to reach to you , can you please grant me audience ? 😅
My boss said he'd pay for the plus version of GPT to make me more productive. I told him i ended my own membership because it wasnt any better than the free version. It definitely helps understand some things. But its not great at giving solutions. 90% its wrong. He said he knows a lot of developers that are having success with it. I doubt it.
Welcome back Chris, it has been a while. Talking about ChatGPT or any LLM project, what are your feelings for those who are self-taught but have no interest in using an AI tool but would prefer to create projects and to continue to learn the old fashion way. Do you think that can go against you if your aim is to get into IT as either a backend or Android Developer? That seems to be all everyone talks about?
I remember Unreal Engine 1, 2 games that used to come with Map Editor called UnrealEd, even back then was very easy to use to make custom maps, models and scripts (I think the language is called UScript or UnrealScript) in games such as Unreal Tournament. You probably remember it. :) As for AI, I know a few of my friend quit learning programming because they fell for the "AI is taking our jobs, it's over". it's sad tbh. but the AI technology is very fascinating... Good luck in your project, Chris!
I get where you're coming from but I'm not gonna use GPT until there's an open source alternative that has a publicly viewable knowledgebase, even if it means I can't make money as a developer. It's extremely sketchy to just send all your your questions and prompts to a single, corporately owned AI, and by doing so is just asking for GPT to improve and replace your jobs, and who knows what else it is capable of. When I have coding problems I just use google and stackoverflow and haven't had any caveats / roadblock doing that, so I don't know what people need GPT for in the first place.
I get into Unreal Engine and it is just overwhelming. For simple stuff I still like Unity but getting good at Unreal is my goal even though it seems impossible if I dont do it like full time
Glad to hear you Chris, i really like your videos, most people like to hear how trends in programming sucking people into infinite hole , once one master something, it becomes obsolete , you are very successful in these types of videos, it seems they are just making money from new programming trends where there is little to no real benefits, you are clever experienced software developer i wouldn't think you would miss the real goal of life , hope you read Quran brother, wish you all the best 😊
I remember you being my first subscription teaching about c++ and JavaScript. For 5 years I still haven't done any coding. Ive been doing random full time jobs instead. So as a consumer of product I'd love to know how AR and VR software works or learn what kind of updates are going on in the coding community. You sound so tired. If coders are being threatened on jobs, you think a regular 9 to 5 job and doing coding as a hobby would be ideal? Idk just my thoughts
Hey Nick, I changed my number and get quite a bit of spam on LinkedIn. I hope you're well. I'll reach out on LinkedIn and give you my new number. I lost yours, so you'll need to text me first, please.
Hows it hype if u also say its going to change the world? U also say basically either learn it or get left behind. I agree with both but.... I mean what can out "hype" those statements? Is Silicon Valley claiming AI will change the spirit realm lol? Also, u pretty much shat all over GPT on that one vid where u prompted with it. People are gonna get fired at the lower and mid levels bro. Or just not hired. Look at the writers guild stuff, AI is a factor. YOU aint getting fired bc ur good and senior level, but honestly tell me that with a 30 to 50% raise over time, and GPT4 you couldnt replace like 5-10 juniors with maybe 30 - 50% more effort/output of your part. As greedy as these companies are, u dont think theyd do stuff like that??
It could reduce demand for lower skilled engineers, or it may just ramp up the speed of development, and we'll all just do what we do now, but at a much faster pace. I remember when we had no browser based tools to debug js with. The tools became better, and things that were nearly impossible became much easier, but the complexity of what we were building grew, and the need for developers grew. This may be the same thing. Without AGI, I think we'll need developers for quite some time. If AGI comes, the world will be a much different place, probably unimaginable, and most professions will be transformed. Engineers who work on the AI may be the last to go.
@@realchrishawkes Yeah that's fair! Just glad to see u put some respeck on GPT's name lol (even though the self censorship/ nerfs lately on it are super annoying). A lot of this will probably also come down to the FED/ interest rates/ general economy moving forward.
@@realchrishawkes even when I worked IT, I averaged six months a year between jobs. When I got a job that didn't, I almost missed having six months between jobs.
I'm in total agreement. My number one use case for ChatGPT, has been, for months, deciphering obscure error messages.
I agree, ChatGPT isn't going to replace programmers. It helps programmers. The ones who should be afraid are Google and Stackoverflow, because it's already more helpful than Stackoverflow lol.
It is. More helpful than Google, I think. Google still has an advantage on new content though.
@@realchrishawkes7 ki ok ó.
Good to hear back! As a senior dev, it’s hard to find a tech to get excited about and stick with it. Good luck and can’t wait to see the game.
Glad to hear you’re getting back I to RUclips. Always a fan of your rambles haha
Thank you lol
I'm excited about your game Chris. Keep us updated.
Definitely will!
I really like your insights, and I am happy to see you back.

I need to put them back up on my website. In hindsight, I should have not taken them down. The channel suffered and there was no reason to do it.
Hey Chris, welcome back. It's always great watching your videos and getting your insight; especially over the last few years.

YT needs you on it 24/7 no joke otherwise your vids won't even show up in people's feed, scary
Yeah, you have to really enjoy it. Doing it for money is very stressful. Some things seem very random. A good release schedule is a must.
Hey Hawkes, great to hear from you. I got the notification bell on now, so I see this video. Keep going; I'll keep watching!
Thank you! Glad to hear it!

Welcome back.
Thank you!
Good to have you back..
In all the years of watching you I thought I was gonna be a IT geek
it's "prooompt", not "prompt"
Lol
Im learing JS and React from scratch and using GPT4 to generate problems to solve to practice methods etc.
That's awesome. Use it all you can!
yes you need to know what is going on with ChatGPT.. and its only up to 2021 code like try asking questions about next 13.4 or something
You got this Chris!
Welcome back Chris. !
Thank you!

there will be a time when there is no programmers to program AI that teaches programming
