- It doesn't get much more Classic than this.... HONG KONG KAI TAK, an airport, loved by aviation fans from all over the world, and NORTHWEST, an airline many loved as well... both gone into the history books Luckily Just Planes visited Kai Tak many times around 25 years ago and captured a lot o great footage like the sampling you see on this video.

747s in Kai Tak, maybe the most iconic scene of aviation spoting
dageek1000 Was based in HK for 3 yrs in the mid 70's with NW flying the 200's
Biggest regret in my lifetime- not getting to spend a windy day watching planes at This airport.
The last one, N666US, did fly for Delta after the merger and was among the last few to be retired.. Final flight to Pinal Airpark on Dec 26, 2017.

Saw the first 747 (Panam) land at Kai Tak in the early 70s, it made the newspaper of the day
First time I flew the checkerboard was in a 707 coming in from China. What a pain. Then in 747-200s in the nineties. What a pain. Tired, raining, often at night. What a pain. I guess I'm glad I did it and can show these clips
to my kid. Actually, he's kind of a pain too. I love both these "pain in the butt" joys in my life.
These landings are very good...compared to some of the stuff we've seen before on Kai Tak videos. It would be interesting to know how the pilots defined a stabilized approach in Kai Tak!
That bowling shoe livery sure was a hit
Landing starting at 1:50 shows some skilled filming, note how the camera operator lets the plane leave the frame at the end, a professional touch 👍

It is still highly recognisable, the runway IS STILL THERE! It is known as Kowloon Bay!!! Some of the markings are still visible on the old runway. Landed there many times myself.... Fantastic memories...
