Then why don't you change your RUclips name ? It's gonna be May 2022 You Still in Love with Lockheeds L-1011 TriStar ? I Sure still Love it. I'm the one that needs a New RUclips Name, i Never hear the end of the Powerstroke Jokes.
The 787 would've only been a true dreamliner if it was designed purely by Boeing.. Ever since the merger of McDonnell Douglas they have left there poor safety inprint on any aircraft developed by Boeing from 1997 and onwards..
phillyslasher Thanks, it was superior to the DC-10 and if the two planes had not been launched at the same time or if , , , well there were a lot of factors that kept it from being a successful type. RR, for one. It was a beautiful aircraft. I had the good luck of having rode in one in an overnight flight to London.
I go back and forth between the L1011 and Dc-10 in terms of looks. The L1011 was way more reliable and the engines definitely sounded more refined. It's too bad planes are so boring and quiet nowadays.
Those L-1011 flight sequences brought back many pleasant memories. I was a Production Flt. Test Flight Engineer for Lockheed and was, no doubt, on the first flights of many of those aircraft shown.
Majestic engine roarrrrr @ 1:12 from those beautiful Rolls Royce RB211 engines. No other engine makes that peculiar roaring noise at take off. Love it. Thanks for sharing.
I flew 12 years with ATA, who by the way was the launch customer for Boeing's 737 with the winglets, on most flights I flew the L1011. The L1011 was the first a/c to land on U.S. soil under the reduced separation rules for arrival and departure, ordered to land in the Azores and informed we would be the first ever a/c ever to arrive in new rules. Skies where getting quite crowded. Call sign REACH!!!!
I understand you criticism for twin jets most airlines like them now but it makes flying cheaper but the for the 3 and 4 engines they need to be on higher demand routes like Singapore-Hong Kong I hope you don’t find this as hate
The Tristar had a very clever lift dump system. If you watch the landings, the L10-11 does not ‘flare’ like other aircraft, but retains the same attitude until touchdown.
I think there is a case for 3 jet engined airline planes to come back into service. The A380, A340 and B747 are sometimes having trouble filling their planes by at least 80%. To break even, you usually need 65% full, and a decent profit, 85%. Since engines are the most expensive part of the plane to maintain, 3 engines would be cheaper to maintain than 4. A plane to carry 350-380 people is the ideal load of a booking for one airplane. The Lookheed TriStar was the ideal airplane for the North Atlantic routes. And even back then, they were quite fuel efficient
Beautiful aircraft...classic....way ahead of it's time in the 1970s ...the first of the truly great wide-body aircraft....too bad the Lockheed Aircraft Corp. didn't produce more long-range large commercial aircraft....what a beautiful sight you were!!!!
The Lockheed tristar is my favourite aircraft too. I like the A300 the A310 the A340 the B757 the DC 10 the B727 the B737-200 the B707 the B747-100 the B747-200 and the B747SP aircrafts. I even like the MD 11 too.
The RAF were still flying the L1011 as transport/refuel jets until 2014.. They are retired now (replaced with A330s) Although the Tristars are still in airworthy condition sat in storage waiting to be sold !
They are about as obsolete as, say, a Commodore 64 or Atari computer. A TriStar is a kerosene guzzler, compared with an A330 or B777. They now are 30 years old and can only be sold by the kilogramme now.
+TheWuschelMUC Wow! it takes a genius to come up with that! We all know the TriStar is an old airplane -- if you don't have any appreciation for history or this airplane why are you here? BTW the design of modern aircraft are still greatly influenced by the L1011, DC10 and 747, unprecedented innovation
Which proves a point I made in another video about that these birds have a TON of life left in them. Maintain them, take care of them, they will still fly even today.
@Shaun Brent Alabado Balgua I mean if they converted it into a twin jet and used the same philosophy they used with l-1011 it can be a truly groundbreaking plane
Would have loved to fly that approach as passenger. I talked to a pilot about it and he said it was challenging to pick the turning point lined up on the chequer board and looking at the runway.Would have loved to watch a pilot during this manoeuvre from inside the cockpit.
in MEXICO aerop cd the most beautiful and impressive jet from 1974 to 1980 was the L-1011 British and Eastern British visited us once a week on the Eastern twice DAILY MEX -Atlanta Miami MEX-N York
God I miss flying in the 90s. Coach was comfy, wide body gas hogs even on short routes, an actual movie screen playing new releases. Can we go back please, I hate flying now and miss my DC-10s.
Back then, airline fleets were good. Had planes that worked. Today almost all airlines have the same boring efficient garbage that probably won't even last as long as these planes back then.
If you're still interested, aircraft registered in British colonies and overseas territories use two letter prefixes starting with V (ex: Bermuda's VP-B** registrations). When Hong Kong's sovereignty was transferred from Great Britain to China (PRC) in 1997, aircraft registered with the VR- prefix were re-registered with the B- prefix used in the PRC. It is worth noting that while aircraft registered in the PRC proper contain the B- prefix followed by 4 numbers, aircraft registered in Hong Kong have the B- prefix followed by 3 letters, a remnant from the British system. Some countries retained the system in its entirety after independence from Great Britain (like India with its VT-*** registrations).
Nice vid. Although it's unlikely this airplane would have made to to production to this decade on its original design, I think the airplane should have flown longer. In the end, neither McDonnell Douglas, nor Lockheed themselves made it to the 21st century with their 3 engine designs.
+The Airline Show Yes, they did, they went via Brunei to Perth on Saturday afternoon evening, arrive Perth about 11PM, depart for Brunei about 2PM on Sunday. It was very lucrative, carried fresh produce back up to Brunei. We only used the 2 -100s that CX bought directly from Lockheed as they had a 450,000lb MTOW and center tank fuel.
Today's commercial airline industry will no longer permit three-engine wide-bodies like the class of the DC-10's, MD-11's or the L1011's. Their prowess and beauty are unquestionable, yet their operating cost wouldn't tolerate all our wishes that they'd come back to the sky. Thus, what we have is the today and future realities: the twin-engine giants such as B777 or B787, or the four-engine super giants like A380 and B747-8 (the four-engine giant, like A340, is a big failure commercially). Fuel consumption does matter!
Remember that DC10/MD11 suffer technical issues deliberately occulted by Douglas that ended by human losses and the beginning of the end for Doug. Also I'm not sure that engine power have somthing to do with the fact that last operators of DC10/MD11 are freighters companies. Will more bet on insurance cost of those planes in pax config and/or very bad public image of them. (in fact links between power and number of engines is complet bullshit)
+Edi Utama I think it's more politics than economics. The cost of maintaining an ETOPS fleet to fly the same routes of three engine aircraft is very closely equal the cost of keeping the trijets, which obviously were not restricted by ETOPS requirements. The added safety of being able to substantial better safety margin when an engine failed, cannot be overemphasize. Of course, the 3-engine airplanes provided a training/transition environment by pilots as many (including myself) started in the flight engineer position,
at such subterranean airports decissive measures like doing a scatty and transicent change of things must not infringe the law of airport , it is not attainable for low experienced pilots to take the helm of landing down
It's October, 2019. And I am still in love with the Tristars. This comment should get 1011 likes.
Having been a flight engineer on both types, the 1011 has always been my favourite 'office' and I got to do AAR with it too . . .
Then why don't you change your RUclips name ? It's gonna be May 2022 You Still in Love with Lockheeds L-1011 TriStar ?

@McDonnell-Douglas DC-10 ..... name change necessary
Same;)
This plane was the dreamliner of its time, such a lovely plane and so wish aviation would bring back something similar.
Start wishing in one hand and crapping in the other and see which one fill up first....
The 787 would've only been a true dreamliner if it was designed purely by Boeing.. Ever since the merger of McDonnell Douglas they have left there poor safety inprint on any aircraft developed by Boeing from 1997 and onwards..
In my opinion the L1011 Tristar was the most elegant of the early wide-bodies.

I liked the L-1011 too, I flew on one which was Delta Air Lines in 1983. I loved it.
@@ericbryce2
If the L1011 didn't have the RR engine problem, highly likely Lockheed would still be in civilian aviation.
@@CoolAce1 Ahem, A340? That thing screams at you.
I flew on the L-1011 as a F/A with Eastern Airlines from 1976 to 1989 it was my favorite out of our whole fleet.😎
A blast from the past! Nothing like an L1011 with the original RB211's!
I m blessed to traveled with a L1011 in 1999 or 1998 with Royal Jordanian. Still in my opinion the most beautiful aircraft to ever roam the skies
Those L-1011 flight sequences brought back many pleasant memories. I was a Production Flt. Test Flight Engineer for Lockheed and was, no doubt, on the first flights of many of those aircraft shown.
Stanley Rober Wow! must've been a blast
That must've been great! It is, In my opinion, the most elegant plane, and my favourite by far.
One of the best planes ever!
I'm a huge TriStar fan, the video is filled with this great airframe.really an excellent job, from an incredible airport
Lots of L-1011 Tristars. My favorite aircraft.

L-1011 is my favourite trijet
The L1011. I love this plane. Very good Video!
Thank you, thank you. On approach they were an awesome sight.Bring em back!!
I don't care what anybody says about fuel consumption. That third engine on a long overseas flight has to be reassuring.
Until it blows up and you have no vertical stabilizer LOL
Absolutely! Can't imagine being over the Pacific or Atlantic with 1 engine.
I understand you criticism for twin jets most airlines like them now but it makes flying cheaper but the for the 3 and 4 engines they need to be on higher demand routes like Singapore-Hong Kong I hope you don’t find this as hate

Edi Utama That's why I thank the cargo companies (UPS and Fed Ex primarily) for keeping these 3-engined giants still flying.
Yes, that's quite true, buddy, because the heavy loads of cargo would always need more engines, not just two such as those with B777s or A330s.
Edi Utama I dunno. Boeing would have kept the MD11 in production if it was selling as a freighter.
