Elders are a critically important role in the local church. However, despite rich teaching on the subject, many people in the church remain unclear as to the purpose, responsibilities, and qualifications of an elder.
As Paul addresses the elders in Ephesus, Luke shares with us the responsibilities of eldership.

In the quintessential modern treatment of the topic, "Biblical Eldership", Alex Strauch argues persuasively for a plurality of elders as normative for Church leadership. In other words, NT descriptions such as elder, teacher, shepherd (pastor) are synonymous terms. The is no such thing in the early Church as an "elder board" as we have come to know it.
