Brazilian here. The way they depict Rio de Janeiro, the Carnival, brazilians, etc, is pretty spot on! I'm absolutely sure at least one member of Blue Sky studios is brazilian. hahah The bird traffic problem and Blu's species being on verge of extinction is, believe it or not, a TRUE STORY. Spix Macaws or "Ararinha Azul", as we call it here, is a species of little blue macaws that actually became extinct in nature here in Brazil, and have recently been saved from exptinction and are being slowly re-introduced to nature by scientists! Despite everything you mentioned, I still really enjoy the first Rio and I personally consider it to be one of my favorite Blue Sky Studio films. I don't think Doug knows that bird smuggling is a real thing and one of the contributing factors to the extinction of the Spix's macaw, which is what Blue is based on. It sounds ridiculous but is a very sad thing that happens.
If you like birds you'll probably like this. The bit that stuck most to me was Jewel says they're sitting ducks on the ground so Blue drags her high by climbing. Indoor birds scale just like this and it just felt nice that the movie gave Blue a moment to shine in his element
This movie will always be special to me because it's what gave me something I never had: a best friend. I had no friends in school. I got ostracized, mocked, manipulated, and kicked all throughout my childhood and I had almost given up on life. But in my first year of highschool, that all changed in my first-semester Spanish class. My future friend and I were seated next to each other, and I remember immediately thinking, _"oh God, I have to sit next to a boy?"_ and he later told me his first thought was, _"oh God, I have to sit next to a girl?"_ Most of my childhood bullies were boys, and most of his childhood bullies were girls so we were weary of each other at first. Then our teacher told everyone that we had to pick a Spanish name similar to ours for the class. My name is Irish-Gaelic and there is nothing similar to it in Spanish so I got to just stay with my real name. But my future friend chose the name Rafael and I said, "oh like the bird in Rio?" and he replied, "yeah, I love that movie!" and I said, "me too!" From there we talked about Rio, our favorite parts of the movie, and which characters were our favorites. Over time, we started talking to each other about our likes and interests and opening up to each other about how we struggled to make friends and we started feeling more and more comfortable around each other. Soon we started hanging out every weekend, something we still do to this day, and we invited each other to every outing, we went to junior and senior prom together, and it's all because of this movie ❤🐦
I have watched this movie a lot of times as it was my little sister’s favorite movie when she was younger… and it’s definitely a good kids movie. It doesn’t exactly blow you out of the water but I can definitely see why kids like it with its beautiful, colorful animation and catchy music. I find that while children are clearly the target audience, it’s enjoyable enough for adults as well with some good humor, fairly likable characters, a decent story and positive messages. Again it’s nothing amazing but it’s a good movie for kids and has some things for adults to like as well.
Fun Fact: there was actually gonna be a Pixar film called Newt that was supposed to come out in 2011 (same year as Rio) but it was believed that due the plot of Newt was so similar to Rio where it was about two animals who are the only two species that find adventure and love, Newt was cancelled and than they release Brave instead
I remember years ago when me and my mom went to see Rio 2 and the minute we got inside there was nobody watching the movie but us so really shows you what people think of this franchise
ngl, is more tolerable than trolls movie. for a biologist graduate, it is a feast for the eyes for 90 minutes of distraction (unless it is on the spectrum).
This is one of my favorite movies of all time because I have never seen anything like it honestly. He says the setup is generic, somewhat akin to a Hallmark movie, but the sheer passion, effort, location, and energy is what makes the film stick out for me. The plot is secondary really.
I liked Rio and man Jessie Eisenberg was great as a bird. Nigel was an entertaining villain played by Jermaine Clement, and Rio looks beautiful and the backgrounds with Carnival and the costumes too also the girls!
This movie had a big impact on my childhood, and it means a lot to me in terms of what it did for me being able to grow into the things that I now really love. I love music and art, as well as samba. Samba is great, but nothing makes me happier than going back to see this movie after a long while to remember the emotions it made me feel, as well as revisiting it with someone who is important to me ❤ Not to mention, the fact that the original birds that inspired the characters in this movie, were able to fight extinction and win.. it’s just so heartwarming to think about. We now know that there’s always going to be the possibility that they’re truly is amazing people in the world who want to see such a beautiful creatures like Spix’s macaws surviving and thriving

@@gamingawesomeness222Still better musical than Mulan Rouge. Why because when ever Mulan Rouge try’s to take it self seriously, the execution was never great. Rio doesn’t try to be serious or complicated, so there’s less to be disappointed by. I would rather watch a by the numbers story, than a story that is pretentious.
Is more enjoyable than the secret life of pets, sing and hotel Transylvania since I need to be distracted by colorful birds for neurological reasons (Aspergers)
I like this movie because it raised awareness to the the problem of the "arara azul" (Blu's species) almost being extinct and the bird smuggling business (yes it's a thing)
I used to geek over this movie when it first dropped. I actually played it too much for the family haha. I loved the animations and characters. It being set in a location not often a setting in animation and the MUSIC!! Will I Am and Jamie Foxx made such awesome music!!!!
I really loved Rio. Its such a beautifully animated movie and I love the colors and characters a lot. Sure there's some awkward moments, however it stands out from other animated movies. The romance is pretty neat and has good chemistry. I also enjoyed the story, and I liked the video games too. IT also has a great soundtrack as well. Absolutely my favorite Blue Sky movie.
As a child who was completely obsessed with Angry Birds back when this came out, I can 100% confirm that I was also obsessed with this movie. I remember the crossover they had with angry birds, as well as the Rio video game that I had on the Xbox 360. I even had angry bird Rio plushies. It’s funny because even though I was incredibly obsessed with this movie as a kid, I genuinely can’t remember anything about it other than what the main plot was and how the characters looked like Doubt I’d enjoy this movie as much as I did back then, but I should really give it a rewatch sometime just for the nostalgia factor.
This is definitely a favorite of mine. I know, I may say that often, but this was one of my childhood movies growing up, and one I'd play on repeat. 😄😄😄
I remember my two young Neices were taken to the cinema to see this movie whilst I decided to stay home and play Skyrim. I think I made the right choice.
This movie is the definition of by-the-numbers. There's no twist, curveball or spin. On paper, it's lazy eye-candy for kids. In execution however... there's a real sense of heart and passion that permeates through the entire movie. This was the directors dream project, as he's also brazilean, and you can feel the deep love for the culture and subject matter. The characters can be entertaining, vibrant and fun. There's silly stuff, sure (the blue painted chicken have me dying every time), but there's also some mature moments in there too, like Fernando being all alone in the favela, longing for a family. And while humans, in this movie at least, are the most interesting characters, the main plot of Jewel and Blu can be quite touching. There's a weird poetic quality to their relationship. Both of them try to get free of each other to get back to their own lives, and yet what they're really prisoners of is their loneliness. Ironically, the chain that unites them, actually set them free. That message in particular has a strong beginning and end, but the middle part is a little shaky. Blu and Jewel just kinda fall in love from on scene to another, which ads to the feeling of lazyness I described earlier. Again, it is a by-the-numbers kind of movie, but there are some strengths in there (heart, visuals, music, culture) that elevates the material for me. If we talk about the sequel, however... that's another story.
I have ornithophobia where I have a fear of birds, like them flapping at me, I especially hate cockatoos. Their beedee eyes creep me out because it's like they're staring into my soul. A friend asked me if I was scared of Nigel, and for a cockatoo, a bird that most don't find intimidating but I do, who is meant to be intimidating, it was quite the opposite. I love Nigel, and I love his song! Jemaine Clement killed it with that and Shiny!
This legit is one of my favorite movies but i don't blame you for not liking it or thinking it's generic. It is. I liked the music a lot, the visuals, character designs and birds in general so yeah. Happy to see you talk about it finally :3
This is one of those movies I put on in the background for a bit of white noise that I quickly tune out as I'm doing whatever is more interesting at the time.
I love how both this movie and Fast Five came out the same year taking place in Rio, but showing the city in the exact opposite as each other. One movies shows it as a beautiful and colorful vacation, the other as dark, corrupt and crime ridden.

Remember how after Frozen came out little kids would play the movie on repeat driving their parents nuts? This was my Froze , I had a mini DVD player and this shit was running 24/7
In the 5th-7th grade (one of those), we watched Rio about just about every day for two or three weeks during the end of the year. It wasn't because there weren't other good options. The majority of the class just wanted to whatch it again and again. We had a sub that was puzzled when we explained which movie to put on.
I sometimes love the lack of energy from Doug. Just like in his Beauty and the Beast sequel video, he goes "I'm onto the next one bye." And just leaves instantly. It's gold.
Doug, I'm a biologist, and let me tell you that bird smugglers are a real conservation threat. Hundreds of tropical birds die each year so that maybe 1 or 2 of the whole lot survive the ordeal and get sold. I'm from Honduras, and we have a serious problem with scarlet macaw smugglers, so it makes sense for them to be the villains in the movie
My mom is Brazilian and we saw the movie when it came out. Yeah it’s corny and cheesy but a cute movie. The city scenes are amazing because the animators really did a great job at capturing the look and vibe of Rio. I’ve been there once and I got a little emotional seeing it beautifully made. We also like the second one lol I love the soundtrack because I grew up with samba and bossa nova.
1:43 actually yes exotic pet/animal smugglers are a real thing, it’s a real problem for some endangered species. Especially high value animals such as tigers and other big cats
First he thought Paris was Notre dame and now thinks Brazil is just "Rio"👏👏👏Doug must have taken a lot of naps in the geography classes tought in his home country of Chicago, growing up.
It's not great, but as a Brazilian-American who barely sees ANYTHING about Brazil in The states. It has a place in my heart. I lived in Brazil for five years, so growing up with it. It was nice seeing things I recognized. The chuhascoaira , the little monkeys with the ring tails, the beaches (Prias), hearing portuguese somewhere aside from my house. The only thing that bugs me (aside from the cartoony exaggeration, ex: we don't set our chicken hearts of fire) is that it reinforces the idea that Rio is the only part of Brazil that matters. Whenever americans think of Brazil they just think of Rio or rainforest. I've never been to Rio in my life, so seeing it instead of other places like Brazilia or São Paulo feels alienating. Though that's more to do with the US than the movie itself. Hope y'all enjoyed my Ted talk
This is my favorite Blue Sky movie, not only it’s actually good, it’s on par with Pixar, even the Pixar executives cancelled their movie Newt, because they felt their movie was way too similar to Rio and would’ve seen as inferior to Blue Sky.
this movie was very much a part of my childhood, but that is because I at the time was obsessed with parrots and birds in general, and still am to an extent. I love this movie for nostalgia but other then that it doesn't hold up tbh!
This movie was pretty good great songs great animation some good characters 7/10 I like how when most of the reviews mention angry birds in it or have a clip of it
@@chasehedges6775 This movie inspired me to take on a 10-year-long series that turned from expanding Rio into a huge crossover that I love to do even to this day. If it weren't for this movie, I never would've found my calling as a story writer.
This film did save the Spix macaw from extinction. They're still endangered, but they would've been extinct by now if this film hadn't raised awareness of the species.
Fun Fact: Rio is "kinda" partially responsible for giving us one of PIXAR's best films Inside Out. At one point, one of the films on PIXAR's release schedule was titled Newt. The plot: What happens when the last remaining male and female blue-footed newts on the planet are forced together by science to save the species, and they can't stand each other? That's the problem facing Newt and Brooke, heroes of "newt". Newt and Brooke embark on a perilous, unpredictable adventure and discover that finding a mate never goes as planned, even when you only have one choice. Love, it turns out, is not a science. PIXAR was even preparing to insert Easter Eggs for the film into into other properties like they had done previously. In Toy Story 3, in Andy's bedroom, there is a sticker on his closet saying "Newt Xing" (Newt Crossing). Ultimately though, the film was cancelled for several reasons. But the two main ones were 1. Blue Sky Studios had recently released Rio, which had a very similar plot. and 2. Since Newt was struggling in production, they brought in Director Pete Docter to help them finish the film. Docter instead pitched the idea that would become Inside Out, and everyone liked that idea a lot more, so Newt was cancelled and the team moved ahead with Inside Out.
It may just be nostalgia, but Rio remains my favorite animated film. That being said, I acknowledge it's flaws, and I don't believe it's a perfect film. But I have so much praise for it, still.

Exactly! Just because he's never heard of it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist at all. It'd be like saying that puppy mills don't exist or something.
That's so amazing! Thank you so much for sharing this story. 😍💙
Oh that’s insteresting~
Only other time I 'member something like that happened was when Dreamworks released ANT-Z 1 month before Disney-PIXAR released A Bug's Life.
And then Pete Docter turned the cancelled Newt into Inside Out.
I remember years ago when me and my mom went to see Rio 2 and the minute we got inside there was nobody watching the movie but us so really shows you what people think of this franchise
Reminds me of seeing Fantastic 4 with my friends lol
It just…exists
ngl, is more tolerable than trolls movie. for a biologist graduate, it is a feast for the eyes for 90 minutes of distraction (unless it is on the spectrum).
Blue sky studios made average movies the only one that made you feel something was ice age 5 and that one sucked
@@Poever One of the movies of all time.
Rio is one of my all time favorite Blue Sky films next to others like the Ice Age franchise!
I was obsessed with this movie when it first came out
This is one of my favorite movies of all time because I have never seen anything like it honestly.
Samba is great, but nothing makes me happier than going back to see this movie after a long while to remember the emotions it made me feel, as well as revisiting it with someone who is important to me ❤
Not to mention, the fact that the original birds that inspired the characters in this movie, were able to fight extinction and win.. it’s just so heartwarming to think about. We now know that there’s always going to be the possibility that they’re truly is amazing people in the world who want to see such a beautiful creatures like Spix’s macaws surviving and thriving

Same. In really liked this movie and it was a lot of fun.
I like the film too
Same I was fucking obsessed with this movie when it first came out but now I see it for all style no substance it is
Soundtrack had no right going that hard
"You're coming with me, little princess."
"I ain't your princess, leave me alone."
Got me laughing hard 😂🤣
It’s funny because even though I was incredibly obsessed with this movie as a kid, I genuinely can’t remember anything about it other than what the main plot was and how the characters looked like
Doubt I’d enjoy this movie as much as I did back then, but I should really give it a rewatch sometime just for the nostalgia factor.
This is definitely a favorite of mine. I know, I may say that often, but this was one of my childhood movies growing up, and one I'd play on repeat. 😄😄😄
To think Pixar was going to steal this plot
I hate it when movie ideas get stolen by other studios.
Pixar would have also done well with this story
@@alexmapp5444 It suck but it's not always a bad thing, honestly
They didn't steal the plot, it was just similar, and they had a different one that was better so they went with that instead, and it was "Inside Out."
@@chasehedges6775 idk this was made in 2011 which is a year pixar would like to forget…
I remember my two young Neices were taken to the cinema to see this movie whilst I decided to stay home and play Skyrim. I think I made the right choice.
This movie isn’t as generic as this guy lets on.
Rio is not only one of My Favorite Animated Films but’s also My Third Favorite Film from Blu Sky Studios
Ive seen this so many times on tv when they show it each year during the holidays. And like Doug says, i struggle to remember anything at all!
Love this movie the animation, the music, the actors blue and jewels especially I believe are great and feels real.
I will say, as someone who has kept parrots, the animators captured their movements and mannerisms very well.
I legit love this movie
This legit is one of my favorite movies but i don't blame you for not liking it or thinking it's generic. It is. I liked the music a lot, the visuals, character designs and birds in general so yeah. Happy to see you talk about it finally :3
I did enjoy this movie when this came out. The standout characters were Nico and Pedro for me and as you said, it’s a beautiful looking movie
I remember playing Angry Birds Rio more than watching the actual movie
I didn't see the movie at all but I enjoyed playing the Rio Version of Angry Birds as much as the original abd the Star Wars Version
I really like that game, too. 😂
This movie was a fever dream
This is definitely, a movie that exists. You gotta give it that.
A great movie that exists.
I loved this movie as a kid.
This movie was veeeery big here in Brazil when it came out lol, everyone went to see it
Blue Sky's entire catalog might as well be "animated movies that go exactly how you think they'd go".
On the twenty-seventh day of Disneycember, Doug Walker gave to me: One of Blue Sky’s best, a movie turned miniseries, “God Bless You, James Gunn!”, Bruce Willis, a Kids’ WB show, a decent Guardians game, a city I want to live in, Boba Fett, Wes Anderson’s masterpiece, a heartfelt tribute, a Clone Wars follow-up, the best Ice Age movie, a confusing game series, Roger Rabbit 2, Thor’s creative bankruptcy, bad-ass history, Pixar’s biggest bomb, Marvel’s craziest ending, Blue Sky’s first sequel, Order Glitchy Glitch, a Zemeckis remake, the best Fox family, a Marvel horror movie, Domee Shi’s debut, one of my favorite Disney shows, Blue Sky’s first movie, and the best Spider-Man game ever!
truly the Morbius of animated movies
Honestly the music from this movie stood out and is more memorable than everything else.
I played Angry Birds Rio when I was a kid and I remember that more than the movie!
I used to own a bird that was the same type as Nigel. It was very loud and I now realize birds are nicer to look at then to take care of.
My grandparents used to have that type of bird (cockatoo).
Remember how after Frozen came out little kids would play the movie on repeat driving their parents nuts? This was my Froze , I had a mini DVD player and this shit was running 24/7
"I dunno. Bye." Wow, that's probably the most meh sign-off I've ever heard Doug do!
This movie had my childhood by the balls. I’ve probably seen this movie more than any other film. Thanks daycare.
In the 5th-7th grade (one of those), we watched Rio about just about every day for two or three weeks during the end of the year. It wasn't because there weren't other good options. The majority of the class just wanted to whatch it again and again. We had a sub that was puzzled when we explained which movie to put on.
“I have beautiful eyes” 👁️👁️ “I bet you can see right through them”
I sometimes love the lack of energy from Doug.
Man, I haven’t watched this movie in years. I remember really liking it when I was young. Hope you give the sequel a chance, it was pretty good too
Ok, but you can't deny that Jemaine Clements is the best part of the movie. He even has the only song in the movie that I actually kind of liked.
1:43 actually yes exotic pet/animal smugglers are a real thing, it’s a real problem for some endangered species. Especially high value animals such as tigers and other big cats
I took my daughter to this in the theater... This is the only movie I fell asleep in the theater watching it.
I liked it fine. And loved the music!
First he thought Paris was Notre dame and now thinks Brazil is just "Rio"👏👏👏Doug must have taken a lot of naps in the geography classes tought in his home country of Chicago, growing up.
Man, the way Doug says it, it really is one of the movies of all time. Of ALL the animated movies out there, this is one of them.
It truly is a movie that exists.
This is one of the most movies to ever movie. Movie!
@@CourtJesterVA 👍
It's Rio.Time!
Critics are raving: "It exists. I dunno."
My childhood favorite movie during elementary school 🥰🥰🥰
This is my favorite Blue Sky movie, not only it’s actually good, it’s on par with Pixar, even the Pixar executives cancelled their movie Newt, because they felt their movie was way too similar to Rio and would’ve seen as inferior to Blue Sky.
The reason it got a sequel: It flopped in the US market, but did gangbusters overseas. It was a huge success overseas, especially in... well, Rio.
It made $143.6 million in the United States on a $90 million budget. I wouldn't call that a flop.
@@alexmapp5444 Movies have to make twice their budget to be a box office success.
I have very fond memories of this movie and it's sequel
this movie was very much a part of my childhood, but that is because I at the time was obsessed with parrots and birds in general, and still am to an extent. I love this movie for nostalgia but other then that it doesn't hold up tbh!
I do enjoy rio as a movie especially for its setting
I love the setting as well. It's very fun and tropical.
This movie was pretty good great songs great animation some good characters 7/10 I like how when most of the reviews mention angry birds in it or have a clip of it
And here we take a look at my favorite movie of all time.
One of the best films of 2011.
@@chasehedges6775 This movie inspired me to take on a 10-year-long series that turned from expanding Rio into a huge crossover that I love to do even to this day. If it weren't for this movie, I never would've found my calling as a story writer.
@@stickmanstickian So the movie inspired you to write fanfiction?
@@jlev1028 Pretty much. And a good one at that.
The plot:
What happens when the last remaining male and female blue-footed newts on the planet are forced together by science to save the species, and they can't stand each other? That's the problem facing Newt and Brooke, heroes of "newt". Newt and Brooke embark on a perilous, unpredictable adventure and discover that finding a mate never goes as planned, even when you only have one choice. Love, it turns out, is not a science.
PIXAR was even preparing to insert Easter Eggs for the film into into other properties like they had done previously. In Toy Story 3, in Andy's bedroom, there is a sticker on his closet saying "Newt Xing" (Newt Crossing).
Ultimately though, the film was cancelled for several reasons. But the two main ones were
1. Blue Sky Studios had recently released Rio, which had a very similar plot.
and
Im a simple person, l see my country in a movie and l _will_ enjoy it even if a little bit
