Great information Elena. I would just like to add that having used Sulphur for a number of years in outdoor and greenhouse growing you can use the dry powder on Mealies and Aphids by applying straight on top of them and the surrounding area. For Thrips I suggest using a Pyrethrin powder made from a species of Chrysanthemum. Also if you have sprayed any plants with an oil based substance such as Seem oil you will need to leave at least 30 days before applying Sulphur in any form as it makes it Phytotoxic which will cause the light hitting the plant to burn. It is advisable to apply Sulphur in the evening, leaving your plants in darkness until the next morning. When I use the Sulphur spray I also spray the surface of the soil to get any that have fallen off the plant. I hope this helps anybody that is battling these little buggers.

Hi Carey! Great information! Thank you so much for sharing! I’m pretty sure it will be helpful for a lot of people. 😊 I’m so glad you mentioned about oil products, I totally forgot to say that in my video since I absolutely cannot stand neem oil and for that the reason I just never use it anyway. Also, spraying in the evening that is very good to know, luckily for me that’s the only time I have to play with my plants and I ended up spraying them late at night not even knowing that’s the best time to do it. Other information you provided I did not know about it. Thanks again for sharing. I will pin your comment for other people to see 💚.

Uggghh I hate Neem oil too. One thing I forgot to add, because you can guarantee I will always forget something, is that Sulphur in powder form is great for things such as root rot, stem rot, bacterial leaf spot, powdery mildew and more, also if you store bulbs, corms etc dust them with Sulphur to prevent mould, mildew, rot etc.
Thank you for pinning my comment as a lot of people don't realise just how many uses there are with using Sulphur, with the added bonus of it being cheap. It is definitely one of the best natural products a gardener or houseplant parent can use.
      Happy growing everyone 💚💚

You can sprinkle the powder on top of the soil to! That’s what I do after treating, and sometimes I just sprinkle the powder all of the plant and soil leave it for hours sometimes a day or two the I spray them down and the powder goes through the soil and kills any that are in there.

    • @Carey.S75

@Dusty Square you just have to be careful not to cause root burn, especially if the plant has very fine roots. I learnt that the hard way, lol.

Thank you for sharing Elena. I do a preventative spray on my indoor plants once a month. If they go unchecked and the population increases they will do great damage. I watched 2 strawberry plants drop to the ground over just 2 days and they never recovered. I was able to spray the remaining strawberry plants before the mites moved onto them in high numbers. The problem with mites is you will always have them. It is important that we keep them in check. Every time you walk outside mites are being blown around in the wind from plant to plant. So they will land on your clothing and you walk them straight into your indoor garden. They are always there. Regular preventative sprays is a must. Much better than seeing the damaged plants first and then treating them. Best wishes Jason from Melbourne Australia.

Thank you for sharing. So many of us have had the same learning experience. I would say again that I think weekly treatments are overkill for flat mites. They have a very slow life cycle. The reason you do serial treatments is to kill the new ones as they hatch out, before they can lay new eggs. Depending on species, it takes 5-9 weeks from the time the egg hatches till they are adults. So you can easily go every other week, maybe even three. Spraying weekly increases the risk of moisture damage on the plants, especially in the winter when they don't want so much water. If you want to be sure, perhaps just spray the new growth in-between your serial sprays.

Hi Elena. Love your videos and lovely personality! I was thinking after having watched some plant youtubers spray sulfur on their hoyas, assuming there might be flat mites, might not be flat mites. I saw how improved their hoyas were and thinking perhaps sulfur could just be used to encourage growth. Maybe the nubby points just might be natural to the plant after leaf or stem drop. Many never saw any mites. Well I don't have flat mites and took a chance and sprayed half my hoyas since sulfur is in some plant fertilizers and tap water. Immediately the leaves stood up and out and firmed up! So I'm thinking hoyas may just need a little bit more sulfur than most to enhance growth. My hoyas were fine but like fertilizer added umph! I wouldn't add more than twice. Thanks for sharing! Dee, NY

    • @ElenasGreenPlanet

Hi Dee! Thank you so much! 💚 I’m glad you enjoying my videos! My Hoyas definitely had flat mites. I saw them through microscope. I even included a footage and some of them had broad mites. Those are a lot harder to see because they are clear and very tiny. I’m not sure about sulfur as a fertilizer. It might be helpful but I have not done any research on it. I used fertilizer on my Hoyas prior and some of them still weren’t growing until I’ve done the treatment. Nubby growth is definitely flat might damage and white gooey film on a stem is more of a broad might damage. That is just my observation.

I don’t think there is a difference. If it’s Hoya, then it’s prone to flat mites. As I mentioned in my video about 30% of my collection had them and they were all different kinds of Hoyas. One thing I have noticed that certain shops I got plants from did not have them at all and others were infested quite a bit. I guess it all comes down to if sellers know about this pest or not. It is relatively newly discovered problem hopefully more people and more sellers will be aware of it soon and we are not buying infested plants.

Once you treat them, you’ll be surprised that they will explode with new growth everywhere. I also suggest to spray your plants with water on a hi setting of your sprayer either in your shower or a sink that will knock some adults and eggs off and give you a head-start don’t be afraid to use hot water and then spray with sulfur. First treatment make sure to spray everywhere on the leaves and under, absolutely every part of the plant. Following treatments, you can just focus on new growth and stems.
