@@Rezparviz Do you realize that cows are not milk machines, right? In order for any mammal to produce milk, they have to be prgnant. A calf is born and then people steal the baby's milk, kill the baby (or exploit her if it's a female) and when the cow can't produce more milk (and therefore babies) she is murdered too. The chicken industry is brutally horrific, so yes, it is wrong. Absolutely wrong and immoral.

I believe the reason buddha allowed the eating of meat is because the monks begged for their food and beggars can't be choosers.

    • @invisiblesilence_

That would be if they had no other food to choose from, which is not usually the case from all I've seen.

In most Buddhist traditions monks are allowed to eat meat as long as the animals aren’t killed specifically for them and are shared among other people, or the food is not prepared with the intention of harming other people or animals. This practice is known as the “middle way”
The Buddha taught that people should generally refrain from killing any living creatures but he doesn’t entirely forbid it. We kill animals every day whether intentional or not as Buddhists consider insects and even microorganisms living creatures.

For the comments - the guidelines the lovely monk provided are specific to Theravadan Buddhism. Depending on the school, there are different rules. As a kind of overall rule, there's detrimental karma attached to eating meat but there's context in regards to reducing harm. For example - if your nice Gramma spent time and effort cooking a big juicy steak, and it's a surprise; it might be more harmful to refuse Gramma (after all, the animal is already deceased). You have to use your critical thinking.

he did. although he wasn't talking about 2,400 years in the future when there's supermarkets and large scale systems. also i assume you're not a monk who lives on alms, which also changes things considerably.
luckily it doesn't matter because buddhism is all about learning to think for yourself. the whole point of most of the practices is to clear your mind so you can think independently. also the sunyata & anicca teachings show that things change and that we have to learn to recontextualize and let go of explicit wordings in cases just like this and see deeper into the meaning of what was meant vs what was said.
      there is no contradiction here.

But it is advisable to be a vegetarian, if you want to be a Buddha you must show more compassion than only what you can give, Yes, you have compassion, but could you be even more compassionate? Why don't you just take that next step when you can? Obviously, if you are poor and have nothing else to eat other than a fish that was donated to you, it is different.

So, these rules fullfill the conditions. Where you weren't the cause for killing, neither you killed and nor you were the one for whom it was killed, but in essence Buddhist teachings preach the the person should try to become vegetarian cause killing is very bad karma.

Im not aware about Buddhism much but in Hinduism you are infact allowed to eat meat but only if your life depends on it for eg. You live in an arid region where there is no vegetation and only yaks etc. Then you can infact eat yaks etc. because you dont actually want to harm animals intentionally. Eating meat isnt a crime eating meat is a part of natures cycle. Thats why many Hindus eat fish, chicken and even beef.

Because the tripitakas forbid it. Lankavatara sukta chapter 16:"At that time, Arya(sage) Mahamati(Great Wisdom) Bodhisattva-Mahasattva said to the Buddha:
“Bhagavan(World Honored One), I see that in all worlds, the wandering in births and deaths, the enlaced animosities, and the falling into evil paths, are all caused by meat eating and cyclical killing. Those behaviors increase greed and anger, and make living beings unable to escape from suffering. That is truly very painful" Then Buddha said "Those who renounce the flavor of meat can taste the flavors of the true Dharmas, truthfully practice the Bhumi(stage)s of Bodhisattva, and attain Anuttara-Samyak-Sambodhi quickly. They can then make all living beings enter the resting-place of Sravaka(voice-hearer) and pratyeka-buddha(self-enlightened one), and after that make them enter the stage of Tathagata". "Pindapathaya" - wadeema, monks, their main goal is to attain nirvana, so the people know they left everything they have to become a monk.
While they walk with a bowl, people know monks are hungry. We need to provide food that's the peoples first thought, not "beggers."
So the people will cook whatever they have in their house, and they'll run behind the way monk walk with their hot meal.
Because the monk will never ask any food.
Then, the bowl (pathra) is open, and then people can give food. If the bowl is closed with their suit, it means the bowl is full.
      Free Food Bowl.
Monks will accept even any food because if someone gives you something with their all heart even if you don't like you need to accept it. Because that moment is really valuable to the other person and later you won't regret it.
