1. Benjamin Franklin
1706 - 1790
Founding Father, invented lightning rod, bifocal glasses, catheter, Franklin stove & glass harmonica. Some could say he invented the American dream.
2. Thomas Edison
1847 - 1931
What list would be complete without him? He patented over a thousand inventions including the phonograph, the incandescent light bulb and the kinetograph, a motion picture camera. He wasn't a stranger to controversy though. Look him up!
3. George Washington Carver
1864 - 1943
Most prominent black scientist of the early 20th century. Developed techniques to improve soil quality. Miscredited with the invention of peanut butter
4. Hedy Lamarr
1914 - 2000
Austrian born American actress and inventor.
Developed radio guidance system during WWII and improved aircraft
aerodynamics. Her techniques survive in modern day Bluetooth technology.
5. Elias Howe
1819-1867
Awarded the first United States patent for a lockstitch sewing machine. Later sued Isaac Singer and won.
6. Madam C. J. Walker
1867 - 1919
First female self-made millionaire in America. Invented line of cosmetics and hair products for women.
7. Nikola Tesla
1856 - 1943
Was a Serbian-American inventor, known for his contributions to the design of the modern alternating current (AC) electricity supply system.
8. Samuel Morse
1791 - 1872
Contributed to invention of single-wire telegraph and co-developed Morse code.
9. Wright Brothers
American aviation pioneers who invented, built, and flew the world's first motor-operated airplane.
10. Lewis Howard Latimer
1848 - 1928
Patent draftsman for the incandescent light bulb. He worked closely with Thomas Edison and patented an early version of the air conditioner.
