I recommend reading To Have and Have Another. It's about the drinks that Hemingway drank and wrote about. The Papa Doble was more than 2oz of rum. It is extremely tart and strong.
In reference to ice in Cuban drinks in the 19th century; believe it or not, Havana had access to ice from New England blocks shipped all the way to Cuba since, wait for it, the 1860s! I narrated an audiobook on the history of Havana a few years ago and was blown away by that tidbit of information. Go figure. :)
Golden Tiki definitely has food. Last year after hitting the speakeasy in the basement of the Mob Museum, Frankie's and finally the Golden Tiki, my wife and I had an incredible meal but were entirely too drunk to remember what it was 😂
Love the show! This (or similar) is one of my favorite cocktails. I back the maraschino down to 1/4oz or even a little less, and I love it. At 1/2oz it’s like a totally different drink.
Great show!!!!!….the entire time I was thinking how much Matt looked like a younger Hemmingway. The closer at the end is just amazing. Thank you Boss😎😎😎😎
Hey Spike. Sorry I missed the premiere. Youse guys shirts* would match the Original Paint, [Chevy 516 Omaha Orange] on my '68 Chevy C/10 Stepside pickup. It's got the original 292 L6 engine/SM465 trans, 12-Bolt GM rear 3.73 Posi. 292 has been rebuilt to .030-over [=296 CuIn], Badger pistons, oversize intake valves [1.84''], Crane 260H cam, Offy intake, Clifford headers, Edelbrock 4v 500 CFM carb, GM HEI distributor. My Orange Sunshine moves. Bought it when I was 23 years old. Won't ever sell. Turned over 400,000 last summer. Still my daily driver. *I have some Orange Hula shirts too.
Having great synergy with the show lately. Finally scored decent white grapefruit juice and have been making cocktails with it all week. Hemmingway was on the docket for tonight. Decide to pop in to the Breezeway and the first thing i see is a grapefruit. Awesome guest. Great show guys, thanks.
I had tried this with pink grapefruit before and i have to say that the white grapefruit fits with the Luxardo like a cabretta glove. I agree that it is rather tart. I can also appreciate the combination of flavors. If you can groove with bitter drinks, this one is a winner. Cool show!
Because of that tartness and the overpowering taste of maraschino liqueurs, this is usually slightly modified to just have 5ml(1tbs) of it and then 1/4 to 1/2 oz simple sirup This way you can also taste the rum better.
Dude! I just saw your feature on barfly freepour! Very nice job showing your bar and enlightening the audience about Tiki! We want to see your original cocktail on the show!
Hmmm……I must have missed this one. Great job again Spike. Sour as it may be, I might just have to save this video so I can try the Heminingway (sp?) daiquiri sometime.
This show is cool because it has a different technique with the ice, I would have thought before pebble ice for all the drinks but this is not the same for this drink.
Spike awesome show as always, you seen like such a cool guy, you remind me of my friend Dave that owns Coast Airbrush in Anaheim, your voices are way to similar it's crazy.
Spike, 'I didnt hate it' Me, 'Hmmm that's what my wife said on our honeymoon night' Thanks for reminding me lol. JK, love this video. 2 of my favorite things, drinks and cars!! Once again, great video Spike!!
Matt, my dear friend, my weekend schedule only allowed me to watch this episode Sunday morning (7.25). I'm in total agreement with many of the previous comments on how good this episode was. Extremely interesting guest, awesome topics discussed, and opinions. Thank you for the reminder of Sabina Kelley, met her a few years ago at Viva, and found her to be as gracious as she is beautiful. Now to the point of my post, please help me identify the name of the song and performer in the outro of this episode (starts at 39:19). I don't believe to be the Black Flamingos, but please correct me if so. Kinda reminiscent of Billy Gibbon's version of "Treat Her Right". Thank you Matt, absolutely wonderful work yet again. Cheers from EPTX my dear friend.
Sloppy Joe's in Key West just had there Hemmingway look alike contest my god how many men look like him, Spike if you haven't been to the Keys you have to put it on your bucket list .
Where do you get your shirts from? Google searches only show super flowery shirts where yours most of the time are zig-zags and various shape patterns. I used to wear shirts like that in the 80s lol.
Closest I can approximate this recipe [without going shopping] is 2 oz Wray & Nephew White Overproof [63% ABV], 3/4 oz Key Limes, 1/2 oz Ruby Grapefruit, 1/2 oz Filthy Red Cherry juice [0 % ABV]. Might work...
@@BreezewayCocktailHour Well, it was a bit dry. A sugarless ,,Daquiri de Papi Ernesto.'' Almost had a tequila/margarita feel. Defintely an adult drink. Wray & Nph White OP makes no bones that this is a serious drink, @126 proof. My iteration with the bottled maraschino juice and a Ruby grapefruit was decidedly Pink. Tried it in a big martini glass. Lit up from below on the back deck with a red-lensed headlamp, it took on a lurid glare, reminiscent of a flock of predatory Flamingos in a secret Amazoni rain forest clearing. Just the thing while I boiled curry rice and peas in an east german mess tin and grilled some Ahi tuna on a small gas grill. Perfect evening. Monsoon moisture and cool night breezes almost atoning for the brutal, searing glare of a normal desert day. Talofa. Brah.
@@BreezewayCocktailHour I'll see if I can find a 4x in my collection!!!- oh, and FYI we ran HD's this week, as Wednesday (7/21) is "Papa's" bday. your procurement process aside, fresh GF juice makes the drink! and 1930's is key, as Hemmingway was an alcoholic refuge in Havana, as he fled to Cuba due to Prohibition
Ugh, that's a bummer... Before I had a white grapefruit tree, I was able to find white grapefruit juice in the grocery store… You just have to make sure that it doesn't have any added sugars or preservatives.

Nailed it w/ the car. Truly transports you to Cuba through a Merry Melodies conduit. Love the curves. Great show.

@@BreezewayCocktailHour I did make and enjoy it quite a bit. I take the sweet drinks but i like a bitter cocktail as well. Its nice to change it up.

I’m so glad you decided to make this! We drink a LOT of these in our home bar! Try it with the Hamilton West Indies…. It’s 🤤

What an interesting drink, loved this episode!!

Great show !!! I believe Hemmingway was a diabetic which could explain the lack of sugar in the Daiquiri .
Just hit the like button, take that as a vote a to have Matt back lol
Love Hot Papi’s high-boy! Fun episode, not sure I’ll make the drink based on your reaction.😝
It's not that bad. It's just very tart not sweet at all. The Maraschino liquor is an acquired taste but it was used for those classic cocktails.

I just checked the Bar Floridita website, and they didn't list lime in the recipe. just Havana Club Rum, grapefruit juice, maraschino

I comment as I'm watching, Hemmingway had sooooooo many health issues , Alcoholism was the least of his problems
Spike was born in the wrong era.
Too many Hemingway daiquiris will make you grow a sixth toe on each paw.
Hemingway was a diabetic that's why he couldn't consume sugar.
