2 things: - This prompted me to finally buy this! - I saw someone complaining about your intro - I love your channel, and love your intro. It’s a great way of acknowledging people who are maybe having a rough time. Keep up the fantastic work!
Simplicity. I like it. Narration driven. I like it. Co-op or solo. I like that. A lot of freedom to the player. I really like that. The game looks like a good purchase choice. 👍
For me, simple mechanics and a focus on narrative is the sweet-spot. The damage system is fascinating in that implications of being damaged can be across a spectrum of positive to negative outcomes.
Awesome, thanks for covering this! Missed this on the radar, but it seems so great. The simplicity of the rules, make this really accessible and hackable! the marrying of RPG and skirmish is what really interests me. Would love to see more vids using your solo rpg toolkit with these kind of light skirmish games. Recommend having a look at Sword Weirdo - caught my attention recently. Cheers!
Ordered. I love Chris McDowall's games and game-design philosophy. I originally dismissed this because I'm not into miniature games, but now I'm super interested! Thanks for the vid!
Daniel. You dig the best stuff out. I had my eyes on The doomed for some time wondereing if is is something for me and zack dungen dive is presenting it! ❤
Lovely to see a local lad getting featured. Do you watch Chris's Bastionland Broadcasting? He would make a fantastic DD guest. I saw this on the Osprey stand at some cons, will have to get a copy sometime
I like your attitude towards skirmish gaming. I don’t have much stuff either (except my massive standee collection from League of Dungeoneers. Huzzah!) and yes you can still have a great time without a large collection of minis and 3D terrain. I don’t think you could ever separate out miniature modelling from the hobby though. People are very passionate about it. I’d be interested to know your thoughts on “Warlord Ascendant” by Alex T. (Blackoath). Another interesting new minis agnostic skirmish game.
Been looking at this and as a miniature gamer as well as board gamer who is getting into 3d printing, there are some really impressive but crazy looking models available out there that would be perfect for this. Thanks for the review
The skirmish games that are coming out are great - I think they've realized just how many people play solo or want random scenario generators. I like some of the older stuff as well (Dracula's America, Last Days) but I don't think it's as geared for solo play. So happy these are getting more popular. I just picked up Fistful of Lead - Fantasy and Reloaded, along with Warrior Heroes - Adventures in Talomir but I haven't had a chance to sit down with them. There's just so many awesome games to play with any number of really unique themes. I do think you're right - the simplicity of play really makes this one a standout and a great place to start.
@TheDungeonDive It definitely tilts more into "classic" war gaming than something like The Doomed, but that's also what's so cool (to me) - the wide variety of rule sets really allow you to fine-tune the level of detail you want. To me, Nightwatch, Rangers of Shadow Deep and 5 Leagues from the Borderlands offer the same general fantasy experience but on a spectrum of complexity. I know everyone thinks we're in a golden age of board gaming, but I also think the miniature agnostic rule set age is having a bit of a moment as well. :)
I don't mind using existing figures, standies, card-board counters, paper terrain for my games. However I've read so many times in different forums people hold up gameplay for weeks/months until they have the exact type or painted minis and terrain to use. If you're into other rules that have an emphasis on generating a narrative with simple combat rules you might want to check out rules by Two Hour Wargames.
Thanks for this great video. Like most of your videos, it caused shiny coins to leave my purse and the weight in my shelfs to increase. 🤣 Would you be so kind and enlighten me on what the battle map you used is exactly, I couldn't identify it properly from the audio only. Thank you very much.
I really like the doomed 6ish games in solo, few horrors and battles get a bit much solo but not overly so, similar game is blood and bone the nightwatch. The Doomed might be the 1st game I complete a campaign on! Also using all fantasy figures just imagining wands and staffs as guns
Mmmm! I believe Nightwatch blood and bone is by Patrick Todorov, creator of the wonderful Zona Alfa + Kontraband. Great solo rules and narrative in the roadside picnic genre. It’s a wonderful game that even a muppet like me could get my head around.
I'm really digging The Doomed. There's so much unpredictability from one scenario to the next. The one stat system is a breath of fresh air. The ONLY thing I do not like is the choice of the narrow font used in the text. My old eyes strain on it quite a bit.
Great review, narrative skirmish games are where it’s at for emergent narrative…you must check out Five Leagues from the Borderlands, I think you’d love it
Daniel, despite your excellent advice on playing "the doomed" with simple 2D pieces for the board setup, I am interested in buying a bunch of model pieces (houses, walls, trees and/or etc). Can you recommend a good web site to do this? Thanks, toby
Right on! I cannot, because I don't buy them. :) I got some a long time ago from Amazon, and do see that they also sell cheap 3D printed stuff. But I am pretty much totally out of the modeling loop.
I have the rules and need to try them out...I do have some samuria figures so a period version with demons, or use my bolt action ww2 for a game in 2940`s europe...mmmm it does get the mind racing....
Anybody have recommendations on affordable minis? I went through a 40k phase in my 20’s now 44 😬 those minis are long gone and I don’t want to pay the GW prices anymore.
I love most things about this game but the wargamer in me cries when he sees how handwavey movement and other things are in it. 50% of playing this sort of game is the stats and keeping track of things, at least for me.
@@TheDungeonDivehaha yeah, I'm pretty sure I'm not the target audience for this, regardless of how much I like a lot of the things it's doing. Glad it exists, though!
Yes! So many games with 20 stats and mods you need a phd to keep track of. I actually want to play a game! Love that more casual options are available after crunchy games kept me away.
Please get rid of that Intro. I know you mean well, but after some time it starts to sound disingenuous. You make people feel well by what you do anyway so there's no need for it. Please don't take this the wrong way, I'm a big fan of the channel, but that is really starting to grate on me.
Great review (as usual). May pick this up as something a bit simpler than 5 Parsecs from Home. Also... Happy Holidays for those who celebrate them and hope everyone is doing well.
There are a few people who don't like it, but a lot do. I think it it bothers people too much it's good that there are so many other board game channels out there for them to enjoy! Often when something really small begins to get on my nerves I just take a break from the thing for a while.

One of the few games I've purchased just based off the description. Really happy with it so far.

Narration driven.

Co-op or solo.

You have me really interested in this game. The smaller play area, measureless movement & ranged attacks, and one stat aspects are brilliant.

I think this is a great entry point for people to get into this part of the TT hobby.
Nice to see the Star Saga minis in the background...
It feels far better than most "dungeon crawler" board games - really looking forward to dive in 🎩
Glad you seemed to have found something you love!

The shock-table roll is very similar to Space Weirdos, another very simple (cheap) skirmish game.
That’s another one I’d like to try some time.
Space Weirdos is great and the newer fantasy spin off is even better

I'd say we're simply in a golden age of TT Gaming in general.
This has come a long way since the playtest of Grimlite! I wonder about running it on a VTT or similar...

Loke Battle mats - cyberpunk
@@TheDungeonDive Thank you very much.

The great thing about it is that there are so many ways to roll up a scenario, so if a few don't work you still have many more options.

Anyone aware of Osprey 's PDF policy? Don't see a print + PDF option.
Great review! Maybe you said it and I missed it, but what is the map book you are using?
I don't remember exactly, but one of the bigger Loke Battlemats - I think the cyberpunk one.
@@TheDungeonDive thanks! I will look it up
Looking to see the gameplay of this game. I indeed looked at this book and realy looks fantastic, added to that Osprey book quality are top notch.
There's some gameplay videos up on the On Tabletop Channel. I don't do game play videos on the Dungeon Dive. :)

You could always use Pathfinder Pawns. They have fantasy and SF. Very good. I use them for all kinds of games.
Hot take having to pay for basically 2 books if you want the pdf and the hard cover.
Would this be playable on a 16x16 grid? (So I can re-use my battle boards from other games)
I think that would be too small, unless you shrank everything down to like 10mm.
Try to guess who's buying this game NOW?
