- Sometimes retro style can go a bit too far, but this walks in the line in an interesting way at least. Lets dig into the good, the bad, and the difficult of SolSeraph in my review!

Sega and developer Ace Team (Zeno Clash, Rock of Ages) dropped a nice surprise today: They’re making a spiritual successor to ActRaiser, the Super NES action-platformer-city-building-simulation hybrid, called SolSeraph. And that game will be released in just a couple weeks on July 10.
SolSeraph’s inspirations are immediately evident. The game is one part side-scrolling action game, one part top-down strategy game. In both sections, players take control of the god Helios, helping humankind from the clouds to expand their territory, then touching down on earth to clear the land of evil beasts controlled by the cruel Younger Gods. Taking a look at SolSeraph’s announcement trailer above, it’s basically a modern ActRaiser, which was released by Enix in 1991 and spawned an action-focused sequel in 1993.
Further driving the spiritual-successor point home is composer Yuzo Koshiro’s involvement. The veteran video game musician wrote the score for the original ActRaiser, and is contributing the title theme to SolSeraph.
SolSeraph will be released on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows PC (via Steam), and Xbox One for $14.99.
Thanks for watching this review and hearing me talk about angels with swords. :P
What version was reviewed?
DreamcastGuy i miss those episodes where you acted 😆
Today they released Actraiser Renaissance and it looks like it used some of these ideas in their game. Such as the tower defense part.
I kept asking for another sequel to ActRaiser's franchise for years. Really happy to see this getting done, even if it's not an original sequel.
actraiser did get a sequel on snes. it got rid of the world building but, it's a sequel.
@@finallife87 It's funny how I posted it 2 years ago and now the dream comes true with this direct. I played the sequel to don't know why they took await the world building, but was good still. Remember it being hard.
Rip off is a needlessly derisive term for homage and spiritual successpr.
@Sandman Slim typo for successor
@Sandman Slim small town
Homage is a excuse for lazy and uncreative devs who copy others

Nah, genres and sub genres are created in games through the process of selective iteration and entire mediums are built off of reciprocal influence.
Actraiser is my favorite game of all time so was looking forward to this but hears but hears bad reviews but you have given me hope again
The fact that the game just randomly kills you reminds me of arcade games, primarily the beat em ups, there are unavoidable health damaging segments in a lot of the best arcade beat em ups.
I love the ActRaiser games! Well, the first one was better. 2nd had a different style , but i still loved it. Good review! PIcking this one up for sure! I hope LRG will make a physical of it.
same here!!!!
Is it really like Actraiser? Because I saw the angel carry a shield, so he should be able to block ála Actraiser 2, unless it is mere decoration and we are talking Actraiser one levels of upset when it comes to difficulty spikes.
So this game even has the bullshit of ActRaiser.
I don't know this is good or bad... Intriguing none the less.
I was just about to purchase this but I am glad I checked your review first. I have loved Actraiser since it first came out, though it hasn't aged very well and needs a reboot but this isn't gonna be it. The moment tower defense was said, I went into immediate reverse about this. Other issues don't help but that is the big one for me. I hate tower defense game play.
If you like this style of game, I highly recommend Smelter. Such a good game
Wow this game is exactly Act Raiser. It's only missing the little fat angle that talks to you.
I really enjoyed ActRaiser when I played it for the first time last year and when I heard about SolSeraph I was pumped up! But hearing about what was "the bad" in this review kinda make me unsure if I want to buy it. ActRaiser had a subtle yet engrosing story and it wasn't hard at all (unless we are talking about japanese version). SolSeraph seems to miss the mark on those elements then.
Yeah, Sol is certainly fun but doesnt feel like it learned enough lessons from ActRaiser overall. If you see it on sale later on for like $5 you should pick it up that way if it turns out too hard you didnt lose much. :P
I've missed actraiser. This seems just the ticket to scratch that itch. Great review as always. I probably won't even know about this if you didn't review it.
"Its one of those thing where.."
"..for the fact that.its one of those things where..."
😂😂😂
I miss Dark Cloud 2. Maybe one day we can get Dark Cloud 3eeeee?
It is on ps4
Nothing beats 2d sprites, that was the original way and the only way its truly done, old fashion 2d sprites FTW!
ActRaiser is not so rare as you said, especially when you r talking to long-time gamer (casual not included), and this game is really like Act on the face of it, straight from its character design.
Actraiser was actually a big deal when it came out. The orchestrated music was the best sounding music in a game up until that point.
This game intrigues me
Cool game mate
Actraiser 1 was one of the 1st games that I bought with my own money and it was amazing. I bought the game on Wii and then again on the WiiU. So seeing this game will be a no brainier for me. They will get my money.
great vid man keep it up.
... Actraiser is NOT obscure...
you become the awesome angel sol seraph? did you actually played the game? you play as Helios, god of sun also known as the knight of dawn
7.5 is the score I would rate every game.
Man I e been looking for an act raiser remake!!
Well, are you in luck…
10 games from each Gen for the switch
This is LIT !!! Keep it up . GG 😄
SMT Chaos bois gonna start hatin!!!
Sounds like you didn't grow up on Ninja Gaiden.
Actriser vibes
Is this by the same developer as Actraiser? That was one of my fav SNES games!
Enix was the developer of Actraiser. This game is by Sega.
Enix was the publisher of Actraiser. Quintet was the developer.
rip off? this game was made by the same team that created Actraiser and its obviously a spiritual succesor since the license of the original actraiser 1 and 2 is and ll remain forever unavailable since it now belongs to square enix
Tiene fecha ese juego?
Act Raiser was / is 16 bit
Do not put a healing system in actraiser 1 had 1 health pickup per stage it was doable also this footage dont look even in the same ballpark hard as actraiser 2 smh
Actraiser is a hidden gem?
The legend of zelda sold 1 million units, Final fantasy 6 sold about 260,000 which was considered low numbers. Actraiser sold about 180,000. Those are U.S figures according to wiki.
Actraiser
good review i think i keep me away from this game
Solseraph is half ass, the building sim is just a generic tower defense. The hack and slash level were short. This is nothing like actraiser they cut too many corners on what made it unique.
change the title to actraiser clone
This game doesn't look good! 😓
Jim Sterling shat all over this game and I agreed with every word lel
Looks. Gonna have to buy ritual of the night beforr I get this game....and finish Hollow Knight..............and several other games I want to buy/finish.
