+Jos Spencer but most laptop mobile graphic cards can't handle even somewhat modern games at 4K. But it's pretty nice to use for movie/video watching for sure.
+0M9H4X It's the convenience factor. I think it's assumed that if you are inconvenienced enough to have to use one of these, then you won't mind how loud it is. I tell you what, this cooler would only be for my desk at home or in the office. I wouldn't take it on-the-go just due to the fact it's one more thing to carry and can make it awkward to handle the laptop. Therefore, if I am at home, I don't care how loud the cooler is.

I use this thing myself just buying it on a whim. It makes a load of difference for me and i love it. Although it does seem a bit awkward just poking out the side.
+aljowen I've had this product for almost a year now. Though not used very much, on max settings, it's very loud and probably not be pleasurable to use in a public space, or without headphones. And also probably would be good if using any voice apps. Medium settings is a little more bearable, but could still be disruptive to a quiet environment.
I've had it since January, the default speed isn't very loud and when in voice chat services most people don't notice it at all. The max setting is of course very loud, they probably missed that part since it's pretty customizable with how fast or slow. Btw I'm using the Dell Inspirion 7559 i7 gtx 960M for reference. I always leave it on a fairly low setting for the sake of not getting sweaty hands.
At 1:06 seconds into your video you show the Opolar mounted to the side of the notebook. The Gray gasket is mounted incorrectly! It should be rotated 180 degrees with the long lip of the gasket to the underside of the notebook. Just might get better results that way.
"the EVGA laptop runs pretty hot"- gets around 75 degree celsuis for crysis 3 benchmark take out my razer blade and run the crysis benchmark, sit there looking at 99 degree celsius for cpu and 90 for gpu with poker face

Awesome to see this thing working. I have seen it before and was skeptical. I think results can vary greatly depending on the configuration of your laptop, but it's cool to have an option.
I'm glad I noticed that the Venom blackbook used to test this is the same as my Powerspec 1510, which is the same as the Clevo P650HS-G, and the same as the Sager NP8157. Now I know it'll work well. (it's 3 bucks off on Amazon for prime day, nothing crazy but nice)
Can you test if spray painting your pc fans increase noise and/or performance? Everyone says its a bad thing to do but no one has the data to back it up.
You said it was weird why the venom blackbook got better cooling even though its stock temps are higher. This actually does make sense because something at a higher temperature loses heat much faster than something at a lower temperature. For example if you took an iron bar heated to 2000f and an iron bar heated to 1000f, and cooled them both with water, the bar heated to 2000f would lose a much larger percentage of its total heat verses the one heated to 1000f. Also did you consider than the exhaust grates on the blackbook are much smaller, and flatter than the ones on the sc17? Allowing for a better seal and a higher pressure airflow resulting in more more efficient cooling.
You're supposed to put the shroud so it goes under, not over. It makes it seal properly and therefore work properly. It would've changed the results significantly. It's like you're front wiping.
I feel like thermal throttling and actual FPS/performance would make more of an impact and be more relevant to why I buy this item than just raw temperature data.
+CRYPT from CATACOMBZ The problem with the pad style laptop coolers is that they can only push in so much air. The internal fans will block a lot of air, and the only reason the fans on pad coolers are so big, or spin so fast, is because not every laptop has the intake in the same spot.

What I think you should have done with testing, is mix of underside cooling with this as well to see how much difference using both cooling methoods would be when used together, other than that, good job on the video as usual.
This little thing saved my Asus N56V. It would shutdown from overheating 2 years ago. Bought this small air extractor back then and it's still going strong. Still can play most games on medium graphics easily, but fair warning, this thing gets loud when it goes into max power (above 50ºC bezel temps) - not a high-pitched noise, just full-on airplane turbo.
It does not work on the predator Helios 300 cuz the air comes from behind if you want to stop overheating install msi after burner it worked on my laptop
The LC-06 has an LCD display and shows the temperature of the air coming out of the CPU exhaust, also has 13 speeds. I love it! It makes game-play and operation so much smoother, with an increase in frame-rates. It does my CPU great, in combination with my laptop cooling pad, superb! A+!!!
Hey Linus can you make a best gaming and editing pc for only 2000 with intel i7 and 16gb ram and 250 gb ssd and 2tb wdb? If yes that would be awesome! :)
I purchased this for my HP dv6t Quad edition a month ago and it has been very helpful at keeping the CPU and the GPU from down clocking due to high temperatures. recommend it.
Luke u might check my Dream Sky Fan vacuum cooler and see how well it also gave my Gpu base clock some boost, and made with me almost a difference in 10fps on avg, and by the way I would love too see how well did the Opolar boosted your gpu
The Blackbook is a Clevo notebook with a separate heatsink for the GPU (venting out the backside) and the CPU (Venting out the side). The SC17 has FOUR thermal vents with the ENTIRE heatsink array connecting both the 980M and the i7 backing it up. So yeah, no shit. The tiny side heatvent isn't going to make much of a dent when you're pulling air through it as opposed to say.... the blackbook which cooling the CPU would matter more in the long running scheme of things.
This comment is pretty late but this vacuum cooler helped my laptop lower temps from 90C down to 75C on playing games. That said, my fps stuttering were fixed. It does work and its worth it :D
One time I couldn’t afford a cooling pad for my laptop and I can literally cook something on it by just playing a mobile game emulator. Usually I just turn it off for a while until it cools down but I got tired of waiting, so I had the audacity and think that “what if I use a ice pack to cool it down” So I slid a ice pack under my laptop where it was boiling but it didn’t touch the laptop so no water goes into the laptop. The result was before I slid the Ice pack under it was awfully hot and after a few minutes it was much, much less hot after the Ice pack was under it.
the problem with strong exhaust cooling fan is that general it removes all the air inside leaving no air to cool the heat zinc , if you have a strong exhaust cooler, you should have a strong cold intake.
+Valtra103 yea but... you can't exactly carry your desktop around in a backpack unless your desktop is like a nuc or a mac mini and a portable display.
+Valtra103 "don't have to connect loads of accessories every time" As in extra keyboard and mouse, and monitor? Webcam if you need to do video conferencing, add wireless adapter to that as well. And minimum twice as heavy and bulky compare to a laptop? That would be even more inconvenient than these "external" things you are talking about. Laptop is invented for a reason you know. And people don't carry these stuffs while they are traveling everyday anyway, except for the power bricks if they need to.
Seems like it works best when making up for underpowered or overworked cooling solutions rather than on a cooling system that is already sufficient. Makes sense, since it's basically like putting a fan directly on top of another one already in your system: you can keep adding fans in the line but eventually you'll get diminishing returns.
Right before I came into building my own PC into PC gaming now, I used to own a laptop with a fan which broke so I ended up using this cooler, ahh the memories.
the evga laptop has both side and back vents/heatsinks which is why the extra cooling didn't do much as it would conflict with the airflow of the back vents.
+Digimutant But they don't have to play massive games on Ultra settings, they don't have the time to play and they don't have the money at all to buy a 2K+ dollar laptop.
+SweBass BTW, You failed to realize they specifically tested this on laptops that were not even 2cm thick. None of the bulky laptops have temps that even go over 70 while gaming. My GT72 typically hovers around in the 60s. And I'd rather not be carrying a desktop with a 1KW Battery to use it on a bus, airplane, or anywhere that isn't my home. Literally the only option for me at the time was (theres that MSI GS60 Ghost and Razer Ultrabook now) to get a laptop only if I wanted performance. Getting a desktop too would mean splitting my budget and not being able to get good parts for a desktop. I don't even have a desk, I'd have to keep it on my bed or something. Everyone has different needs mate.
i have used some similar products and my temp results were identical with or without the extra fan. the reason is the build in fan and how the temperature curve of the maker works. if you can see the internal fan you can observe that the fan is slowing down cause of the outside fan doing all the work
I believe the difference in results was from the heat creating its own pressure and the air then actively working more effeciently at depressurization of the heat on its own due to the higher hot to cold difference. Please get back to me if you find this to be true or false.
I use something similar on a work laptop that keeps overheating. Honestly? If you have a good laptop it generally makes very little / no difference, as the fan is already sucking the air out as quick as it can. BUT, if your laptop is a little older, the contact isn't as great, or the fan is clogged with dust, it can make a world of difference.
At the rotation speed 7, it is as loud as typical laptop coolers which are categorized "quiet". At the rotation speed 13 (max), it is as loud as typical fans.
Laptops are designed in such a way that in pretty much every situation, temperatures never get critical, no need for a laptop cooler, just place it on a table or any other smooth, clean surface. Dont place it on your bed, or carpet, or towel when you're gaming! Sure, the cooler a laptop (or any piece of electronic equipment) runs the better, but do you really need it to last for more then 4 years? It will not be able to smoothly run the newest games by then, you just buy a new one.
I think the reason the cooler barely made a dent in the EVGA laptop was because the built in cooler/fan was drawing more air than the external cooler could provide, sort of like trying to boost a turbo fan with a 120mm fan.
I have the really badly designed Pavillion dv7-4280us. Even after taking it apart, dusting it down, and replacing the fan+heatsink combo, it still overheated like crazy just watching YT vids. Ended up getting this as a last ditch effort half a year ago. It lowers all of my temps by 10+ degrees Celsius and almost never overheats even when gaming on it. I don't know if my laptop would still be running without it. TLDR: It's WELL worth the money if your laptop has a poor cooling system/design.
That feel when you don't own or give a shit about laptops but it's 3 in the morning and you have nothing else to do.
+disastrix47 I have a gaming computer for when I want to be a friendless basement dweller, and a gaming laptop for when I want to go spend time with friends.

The tiny side heatvent isn't going to make much of a dent when you're pulling air through it as opposed to say.... the blackbook which cooling the CPU would matter more in the long running scheme of things.
even noctua would make the rubber look better...
HailgodMC nah, they are pretty budget for what they give.
This comment is pretty late but this vacuum cooler helped my laptop lower temps from 90C down to 75C on playing games. That said, my fps stuttering were fixed. It does work and its worth it :D
Crikey! If you go to 5:35, you can spot a wild Linus.
+The Butter Toaster It scared me. I thought I was going to get a fucking gold star.
I just use Air-conditioner
the problem with strong exhaust cooling fan is that general it removes all the air inside leaving no air to cool the heat zinc , if you have a strong exhaust cooler, you should have a strong cold intake.
Yeah... External Gpu, external cooler, external power brick. Laptops... So dumb.
:-)
+Valtra103 yea but... you can't exactly carry your desktop around in a backpack unless your desktop is like a nuc or a mac mini and a portable display.
Christian Gomez
I would carry small desktop. So I don't have to connect loads of accesories every time.
+Valtra103 but you would have to connect all your input/outpu/network cables every time instead...
+Valtra103 "don't have to connect loads of accessories every time"
As in extra keyboard and mouse, and monitor? Webcam if you need to do video conferencing, add wireless adapter to that as well. And minimum twice as heavy and bulky compare to a laptop? That would be even more inconvenient than these "external" things you are talking about. Laptop is invented for a reason you know.
And people don't carry these stuffs while they are traveling everyday anyway, except for the power bricks if they need to.
I know this is old, but he literally just called that thing a nuck instead of a nuke. Explains why I don’t see them as sponsors now a days!
How loud is it?
Really great question.
Péter Friedrich their reviews have really slipped in quality :/
Seems like it works best when making up for underpowered or overworked cooling solutions rather than on a cooling system that is already sufficient. Makes sense, since it's basically like putting a fan directly on top of another one already in your system: you can keep adding fans in the line but eventually you'll get diminishing returns.
2:15 this is why I'm here XD
same lol
Watch this guy dancing behind the camera @2:14 . Just look at the reflection off the Opolar. Do you see it? LMAO "Whatcha doin' bro?"
2:14 deamon in the reflection
Right before I came into building my own PC into PC gaming now, I used to own a laptop with a fan which broke so I ended up using this cooler, ahh the memories.
didn't even mention the noise? seriously? also was disappointed no comparison to average laptop coming pad or even just mentioning about it...
the evga laptop has both side and back vents/heatsinks which is why the extra cooling didn't do much as it would conflict with the airflow of the back vents.
Damn

Any chance we could get a refresh on this video? Maybe with some laptops with 30 and 40 series gpus, ryzen 7/9 i9/i7?
If your laptop get that bulky because of the heat, then just get a fucking desktop
+SweBass What?
Everyone has different needs mate.
i have used some similar products and my temp results were identical with or without the extra fan. the reason is the build in fan and how the temperature curve of the maker works. if you can see the internal fan you can observe that the fan is slowing down cause of the outside fan doing all the work
I thought this was a breast cooling solution for 0.5 seconds.
I believe the difference in results was from the heat creating its own pressure and the air then actively working more effeciently at depressurization of the heat on its own due to the higher hot to cold difference. Please get back to me if you find this to be true or false.
Into the water! :o
Hiii
+Samuel Anderson Hello! :D
2:15 Lol
yes
What? No f bomb? Thumbs down!
2:16 guy dancing
I used his on an older mid tier gaming laptop and while pretty loud it did a decent job cooling things down.
2:15 wtf 😂
Depends on if it sucks the air out or blows air in on this fan and your laptop.
