- Cazenovia, Wisconsin. After whitetail deer hunting opening day on the Duren family farm, Steven Rinella talks with Doug “Buckman” Duren, Brittany Brothers, Helen Cho, Janis Putelis, and Mahting Putelis.
Subjects discussed: blaukš!, or the Latvian bang; similarities between opening day and Christmas; similarities between opening day and war; mooching for whitetails; The Wet Spot (or what Steve would name his bar if he had one); The Standard; Steve’s alternative big buck management plan; thoughts on antlers; after-kill rituals; and why people want to let small animals go, aside from the fact that they don’t have as much meat.

Love you guys Steve, keep it up. Helping my girl do a paper on the positive effects of hunting right now.
Love this convo. Just killed and butchered a goat we bought from someone who bottle raised it knowing it was going to be sold for a breeder or meat. Handleable and social animal. They asked not to be told what happened. Had mixed feelings about killing it but knew we bought it for food. Took a second shot to finish due to inexperience on my part but was a quick end. Still feel regret about the way it happened, great to know I'm not the only one feeling guilty about taking a life, even though I know we will use the meat for our family. Thank you for this conversation, definitely helps to know others have the same empathy for the animals we kill and eat.
Really amazing and reflective podcast
Great pod cast. I love the diversity of hunting experience in your group and talking about the internal reaction to killing a deer. You also helped me reminisce about the excitement of my own opening day. Can't wait till next year!
I love the podcast. Have 21 and 22 been deleted?
What happened to episodes 21 and 22?

Im a Wisc deer hunter. Wisc deer hunting culture is in decline. The deer drive style has declined. Its been replaced with stands and now saddles. When i was a kid, it was a group activity. Todays, its very solo or the group at camp, hunts solo. We all understand why it has declined. Dont fool yourself
FIRST MEAT!!
