  • Nitro Guitar Refinish! In this video we go over grain filling, spraying sanding sealer, color coats and clear coats using spray can nitrocellulose laquer from oxford guitar supply in Canada. I show how I sprayed nitro on my guitar refinish project, and I show what safety precautions are necessary when using nitro products. I sprayed this guitar shell pink, which is a classic fender colour. So far, it has turned out really nicely!
This has been months in the making, and I'm excited to share this project with you.
Stay tuned for part 3 where we finalize the entire project!
    All sanding grit references are 'P' grade. P220, P400, P600, P800, P1000, P1500, P2000 etc
All sanding in this video was dry sanding.
This project has taken me almost a full year to complete, due to the winter causing me to have to wait to spray, and working around day job and life commitments.

Dude you are SO GOOD at explaining the whole process, this was super entertaining and the colour is just perfect.
    I can't wait for part 3!

Nice video.... I've built a doubleneck ST and I'm doing a doubleneck SG. Your video is by far the best I've found for prepping and painting. I can't wait to start my White Falcon build in a few weeks!

I'm planning on making a vintage cherry SG this summer. This guide is exactly what I needed.
Quick question, for mahogany bodies is there any extra steps or considerations I need to take account of, or can I just repeat the same steps here for the basswood body.

Awesome, that sounds like a cool project. Glad I could help. I think yes you can basically just repeat the steps I've done. I would recommend the grain fill for mahogany.
It might be useful to do a very light sand somewhere in between some of the coats, and spend some extra time and care on the final sanding/polishing. The instructions I followed told me not to sand between coats, so I didn't. But I didn't end up with as smooth and mirrorlike of a finish as I had anticipated. I would attribute that to the final sanding & polishing process. Hope this is useful. Have a good one & best of luck on the project!

@@Levisrad that's good to know, ill have to add pore filler to my list of materials. Thanks again for making this series because I've spent close to a month researching nitro paint alone and this is the best guide I've found.

Looks great! Why didn’t you use a primer over the sanding sealer? Also why didn’t you sand between coats? And finally how long did you leave between each colour coat?

    • @Levisrad
      @Levisrad  7 месяцев назад +2

I used the Oxford Deluxe Nitrocellulose kit, and mine didn't come with a primer. I suppose primer wouldn't hurt it! The instructions on lonestarguitars website said "sanding between the color and clear coats is not necessary, unless you you have drips, runs, blushing or other major imperfections in your finish." I maybe should've sanded between coats at least once or twice just to knock all the high spots down, and polished it better. About 20-30 mins between coats, and only 3 coats a day. Thanks for checking the video series out!

Also being a previously finished guitar- there’s SO much sealer and filler already in the guitar from the factory, that as much sanding as you do you probably won’t get through it. I tried to stain a previously color painted guitar and it took FOREVER to get through their sealer and filler.

    • @Levisrad

@@modusceo this is true. It takes a ton of work to get all the old sealer off. The chemical process helped a lot. A guitar can be repainted without taking it down to the bare wood too. The new paint has just gotta be compatible with the underlying coat. Thanks for checking out these series!

I see a plain guitar and I want to paint it bla-ack....
No colors anymore, I want it to turn bla-ack.
    ....Still, nice job.

Levi brother. I’m 10 minutes out from spraying coat 3. Might end up having to do a 4th since the top piece is dark in some spots and showing. Thank you for this video series so so much. Love from one Calgarian to another
